Is that actually the optimal way to demolish that sort of structure or do you just arrive at the site, look at what you got for a while and go "you know what, we can have some fun with this"?

In this case, it looks like three directions are blocked off for space (the river, the building, and the side closer to the turn of the river), so having them collide and minimize the debris field seems pretty logical.
