They sure are running a lot of centrifuges, and kinda sneaky about it too. Their problem is they need to test any efficient light implosion design, but can't do it at home because the moment they do the Israelis are gonna go all bitch-cakes, cuz, ya know, they're a wee bit touchy about dudes wanting to kill millions of Jews. So they need someone else to test for them, that is Porky Pig over in Nork. Or, if they want to be wasteful of uranium, they could build a gun-type slow assembly bomb, which is pretty sure to work. Now their cover story is that they are making 20% reactor fuel. Now the way these centrifuge arrays work AFAIK, the richer the feed, the faster the separation. Going from natural .7% to 20% fuel grade consumes the great majority of centrifuge time. Going from 20% to 80-90% weapons-grade is relatively quick. So if they have a large stock of 20% they can make enough bomb grade quickly to make a gun bomb. Whether that bomb would be missile deliverable is unknown, but Murka managed to put a gun bomb in an 8 in. artillery shell (Test Grable). ... What are the odds of the ME getting glassed in say, about 2020? e: Any small bomb virtually requires fusion boosting to reduce size, weight and efficiency. for that you need tritium and for that you need neutron flux and for that you need a biggish reactor. e2: Are they getting tritium from Porky, I wonder? There's an ugly little partership going on between Nork and Iran. All the more reason to take out the pudgy little gently caress soonest. Man, he sure could use 15 minutes on a Stairmaster. zimboe fucked around with this message at 10:52 on Aug 8, 2016 |

Oppressive governments even more so. ... Sure and they're going for a bomb. They'll just keep it secret and not admit it as Israel (wisely) has. Plausible Deniability and all that, yah know. What's the point of secretly having nukes? Isn't the whole point of nukes that you can threaten people with them? If you keep them a secret then you might as well not have them.

Dammit, I have proposed a serious question here. Now in the old days, during the Cold War, which many Goonsirs are too young to have experienced- the nightmares that many children had at the prospect of instant annihilation at a moment's notice, as I had, You Goons have never heard the air raid sirens in the 60's whooping and the silly "Duck and Cover" films they showed me. I knew as only a child that it was bullshit and lies. the prospect of Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) moderated ( a carefully chosen word) the Cold War between the old CCCP and USA. This worked because neither civilization was irrational and wanted to survive. ... Now take the Israelis; culturally traumatized by the Holocaust, and the radical Iranians bound by the quest for a fictional Paradise. I question if MAD will work against a culture that doesn't value reality.

Neither apartheid South Africa nor Israel nor the United States of America nor Pakistan nor the Soviet Union have managed to blow up the world yet, so I don't see what the worry about Iran is. Unless brown skin and qu'ran ownership makes one uniquely evil.

The argument that Iran would go nuts if they had a bomb is so tired, because while they talk a tough game, they already know the outcome of using a device. And its not in their favor.

That being said, I think that you're generally correct and the downsides usually outweigh the benefits, but it's still something that needs to be considered on a case by case basis and isn't always a bad thing (though it usually probably is).

To take that idea to an extreme, it would be a bad thing if every country destroyed its nuclear weapons except for Russia. There's something to be said for a balance of power leading to stability. To be more specific then, if Iran had confirmed nuclear weapons, Israel would make its open-secret arsenal public and Saudi Arabia would also seek to acquire nuclear weapons. Egypt and Turkey would become nervous and likely seek out their own arsenals, and the balance of power in Africa would be heavily disrupted by a nuclear Egypt. Nuclear proliferation makes the balance of power less stable, not more, in addition to the simple fact of "the more nukes there are, the more likely they are to be used." The recognized nuclear powers of USA, Russia, UK, France, and China are all both part of the non-proliferation treaty and are countries with relatively stable governments. This is why India getting nukes was such a huge deal (not a NPT signatory), and PAKISTAN getting nukes was scary beyond the pale because it's a borderline failed state. This is why a nuclear Iran is a bad thing that shouldn't be allowed to happen. It has nothing to do with scary brown people and everything to do with non-proliferation and the balance of power in the Middle East/North Africa.

They're not building nukes and the fact you think they might be signals that you've missed the details of the situation in Iran. This is quite easy to do as when you see the headlines which have Iran and Nuclear Weapons in, you instantly assume that the issue is they might be making nuclear weapons, especially with the way parts of the media distort the narrative. However that has never been the issue. The issue is that they might at some point in the future choose to develop nuclear weapons. Aside from ill-informed demagogues, the conversation over the past several years hasn't been "Does Iran's making nukes, let's confirm this" it's been "Iran is increasing it's peaceful nuclear infrastructure, which as a signatory to the NPT it should be entitled to do, but which has the side effect of worrying us because this makes it easier for them to start developing nuclear weapons in the future so what do we do about it?"

Huh maybe we should have nuclear inspectors in Iran. Like from the IAEA or something. Maybe we should even have like live camera feeds in key facilities. Maybe we should have periodic checks on whether they're enriching beyond agreed limits. Just to be safe let's replace the head of the IAEA with a partisan guy who will take the U.S. side on the issues. Also let's enact sanctions even if Iran adheres to the NPT but like, we don't feel like they really mean it. Hmm. Hmm.

For real though, even the CIA's conclusion was that Iran finished most of their preliminary work on a bomb in 2003. If they wanted a bomb at this point it would just be a matter of enrichment, hence the nuclear deal to reduce their breakout capacity such that it would take a year, during which time they could not keep their intentions secret. That's the whole point. If Iran chooses to start building a bomb, everyone will know, like if there are Morgan Webb nude photos.
