The Obsidian Conspiracy is pretty alright too, the In Memory EP is solid, I sometimes dig Politics of Ecstacy but I need to be in the mood, not a fan of the s/t. Overall a pretty solid discography though, it's worth giving it all a shot. If you dig Nevermore, also give Sanctuary a listen. Avoid Warrel Dane's solo work. e: Van Williams is also in a new band called Ghost Ship Octavius with some kid who's a really good Dane-esque singer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQ6R07o47aw

A while ago I mentioned how Eluveitie played a really lovely show at Wacken, with Liv Kristine absolutely loving up vocals and lyrics. Well, here is the evidence (including a flautist that sounds like he's trying to pull off that joke 20th Century fox song) Performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgJY8pEkQas Lyrics: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/e/eluveitie/a_rose_for_epona_lyrics.html My favorite part is that at the beginning she just decided to say "have you forsaken us?" over and over and over. It's marvelous.

In her defense one of the guitars is way out of tune and it's really hard for the vocalist to sound confident if the rest of the band keeps loving up I mean she's clearly got zero voice or charisma but this one isn't entirely on her also I want to punch the flutist so hard

I don't know what's the thread's opinion of Sabaton, or of power metal for that matter, but they're releasing a new album in a few days. I haven't listened to the whole thing yet, but I really enjoyed this new track they posted on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ylyqoxh-cXk They're not really reinventing the wheel, since they pretty much maintain the same sound they've always had. Somehow I feel that works for them, unlike other bands that just become boring (it might be because I like history, so going through the lyrics and then looking the stuff up is pretty fun for me). funeral fag posted:In her defense one of the guitars is way out of tune and it's really hard for the vocalist to sound confident if the rest of the band keeps loving up The problem is that she does have the voice and charisma. She played with Atrocity for many years and, until recently, was the singer of Leave's Eyes. She toured extensively with both bands, so I think that this is a case of lack of preparation for the show. Considering it's Wacken, not some small club, not preparing your poo poo is pretty inexcusable. Since I have to write the review for the festival, I looked up some info on the performers. When I saw the young girl playing the hurdy gurdy I actually thought "did they get just a fan from youtube or something?"... well, they did. She made covers on Youtube, and this was her 10th live performance ever. The situation sucks, and I really hope that they'll be able to get their poo poo sorted out. Right now Chrigel, the singer, is the only remaining original member. Although he has always written most (if not all) of the music and lyrics, I do worry that he won't be able to find performers that will be at the level of those that left. I really like Eluveitie

Anybody listened to the Christian Muenzner solo stuff? Pretty solid mix of stuff, but he apes Cacophony really hard on some tracks. Kind of sounds like an amalgam of all the stuff he's done in various bands. Still down with the neoclassical guitar noodling though.

While I really don't consider myself an avid fan of the power metal genre (too much cheese), I enjoyed their last album, Heroes. Actually, probably one the best albums of 2014 for me. Despite my efforts, I can't get into their back catalog or the few preview tracks from the new album. I've always been confused by the fact that the majority of the band (everyone minus the singer?) uprooted and left the camp to form yet ANOTHER war themed metal band, Civil War.

We figured they have a checklist of cultures they haven't made a song about, got to have a crowd pleaser for all the locations. I'm only now listening to the album now, and so far I've heard songs about Serbia, Sparta and Japan. The press info I was sent doesn't include much details about the songs, but some dude on Reddit went to the listening session and wrote what the songs are about; no idea if he simply went and asked the members or if he paid really minute attention to everything. https://www.reddit.com/r/PowerMetal/comments/4qs05e/sabaton_the_last_stand_listening_session/ NINJA EDIT: AS for going stale, I don't know. I sincerely enjoy the historical lyrics, so that makes me pretty biased in their favor (or in favor of any band that does that). Other one-topic bands, on the other hand, do bore me a lot. I cannot stand Alestorm, for example. I think their whole schtick worked for two albums, and that was more than enough. Speaking of Sabaton, their singer, Joakim Broden, is guest starring in a Pain song. Since I hated the work Peter Tagtren did in Lindemann, and even though I'm a fan of Pain, I was concerned this would be poo poo. Well, it is at least better than Lindemann. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ml4iBTfoplY

Been to Into The Grave festival in Leeuwarden in the Netherlands last weekend and it owned bones Voivod was really cool and they were hanging out in the bar at the afterparty having chats with peeps and doing photos. I didn't know about Tribulation so they were a nice suprise for me cus i loved that haunting killing joke style guitar wailing. We catched the end of Gruesome while waiting in line but it sounded cool anyway. I'm a big classic Death fan. They closed with Death's Pull the Plug iirc. Evil Invaders were brutally loud, starting the saturday lineup, pretty amazing how they got everyone pumped up to party instantly. Guitars fell a bit behind in the mix with some ridiculous drumming but oh well. They sure looked like they had good time, loved they enthusiasm. Almost fell asleep during Unearth that i absolutely hated but most everything else was good fun. Definitely interested in going back there next year. The whole thing was in front of a church on a brick graveyard of some sort, so no mud, no poo poo and it was good on the old legs (lol) Also intensely friendly people all over the town showing us the way and what not.

I'm not sure how to describe it otherwise. When I saw them live it was loving awesome, maybe it was the crowd or their energy on-stage but it was great. When I sit and listen to this stream, and any of their other albums for that matter it just doesn't engage me. The riffs are great, the vocals are OK, the drums are adequate if unremarkable...I should be listening to it and going "yeah this is good, let me listen to more" but instead it's "yeah this is technically good, but I can't be bothered to listen to more than 2 minutes of a single song on an album".

Went to Bloodstock at the weekend and holy poo poo Burton C Bell from Fear Factory cannot sing any more. They played the whole of Demanufacture and the crowd were signing the songs better than him for most of the set. Even Tom Araya sounded better despite the fact he looks like he's approximately a million years old. Ghost Bath opened on the Sunday and were fantastic, but a lot of the crowd were not prepared for those vocals. For the rest of the weekend the campsite was full of people doing impressions of that weird yelping scream the vocalist does.

USBM is an abbreviation for Pitchfork writers who couldn't find poo poo to shovel in a barn, because it wasn't a current commercial interest. It's a shame the idea of American black metal came to represent garbage like Xasthur and Leviathan among the worst heap of it. There's some great stuff, from Goatlord's 80s works to Demoncy's Joined in Darkness to everything Judas Iscariot ever did (no hyperlink here, because) to th e recent works like One Master's live tape and One Master's albums and Bog of the Infidel. or being drowned in space by Aureole/Mare Cognitum. Please think of Satan's children before you listen to lovely post-rock bands calling themselves black metal. gently caress them and this guy's lovely moustache before you speak four-letter-acronyms against them. There are good black metal bands from America who know how adults use a razor. Exhibit A: Profanatica has now committed to the vicious, ripping, Necrovorous lineup of these first seven tracks, after a final farewell to Old Man Gelso. https://profanatica-us.bandcamp.com/album/sickened-by-holy-host-the-grand-masters-session

Apparently he sung a U2 song well enough in the shower 30 years ago to convince Dino that he'd make a great frontman, but outside of that one isolated incident, I don't think Burton's ever really been a competent singer. Fear Factory was one of the first metal bands I ever heard, though, so I'll always have a soft spot for them.
