I liked this week's league race since it was hilarious to me that my damaged Audi has to be flown from one country to another with no repairs to start the next stage. Since at the time the leaderboard said I was the only one to complete all the stages, have a video of how badly I did it.

You'd better do this league, I was a bit more cautious this time and didn't manage to gently caress up everything with snow on it (just gravel this time instead).

I have major issues with snow and ice in this game, 4th place but I survived! My radiator died right as I crossed the final finish line.

It's a shame the different groups aren't that competitive against each other. I had the #1 time in the '95 Impreza at one point, until people started setting better times in Group B. I don't know what classes are evenly matched. Maybe the Kit cars and 2000s, but probably only on tarmac, as 4WD will probably dominate on loose surfaces.

Most anything outside of Group B is competitive with each other or limited to their own game modes.

If people wanted to race seriously then probably the best way to split up the groupings is to do Groub B+2010s, 2000's+F2 Kit cars, and then lump the 60s/70s/80s together... but imo it's cool to have what are essentially different natural brackets within the same rally imo if you aren't going for overall points by driving the Peugeot every time.

Whew, group B riding that razor's edge as always. Just finished up the league, didn't end up streaming as my system's been acting funky lately, though I regret not trying now.

Got ~5 seconds on you in Greece, lost 3~ in Germany, but was sure I was going to lose a bunch in Finland: nope? I don't know Germany/Finland/Sweden so well since they weren't around in EA days, but slow clean run clenched it I guess. Monaco is much easier with VR now, I used to be terribly slow at it, got another 2 seconds there... and Wales is my next favorite after Greece so had fun there, but Sweden... my clean runs finally came to an end, very nearly got a reset careening off a hairpin having to reverse out, lost 6 seconds.

So ice/snow are your's this round, but Finland's rollercoasters must've not stayed on the rails so well :P

Yeah, smashed a telegraph pole and lost the front right tyre at the first split, and had to limp the rest of the way round.

This time around I used shadowplay so quality is much better and I got some configs for the Quattro from Steam Workshop. Those configs plus getting better acquainted with the Quattro's handling made me much better about this week. The first minute of Greece might say otherwise.

Name of the game for the Quattro is weight transfer. Once you get the feel for it it's awesome. This is why it's so polarizing, some people just don't jive with that style of driving.

This is true for rally in general, not just the Quattro. It just doesn't have any power compared to others in the class so you can't rely on or get stung by the loud pedal so much.

Not sure if this was updated, but remember it being a good overview when it was originally posted

Well, I just broke 400 hours. I can't tell if they keep making the game easier, or I keep getting faster.

This is my first time driving using a traditional monitor since VR came out. VR is fun but this game absolutely does benefit from >100fps framerates

Oh, btw, in VR, try playing without resolution scaling, and instead go for 4x or 8x MSAA. It seems like some visual effects (mainly related to cockpit reflections and lighting) are gated behind having one of those options selected.

Please beat my garbage times on Monte Carlo, they're all top 20-30. No such thing as a perfect run, so there's definitely some slop in all 4 runs.

60s - 2:42.376
80s - 2:36.743
Group B AWD - 2:25.194
2000s - 2:26:860

All attempts (and some failures) here (it's 2k Twitch stream so it's compressed to poo poo, forgot to bump that up after they raised their limits!)

Been having some good breakthroughs myself, getting to a point where I feel like I can really floor it a lot of the time - approaching 350 hours played (according to steam, lots of AFK im sure). I don't think the game gets any easier. As you get better you keep pushing harder and you still run up against that line where stepping over = crash; which is probably why I am still having fun blasting around.

Just got 95th on dyffryn afon reverse with fiesta RS - 3:05.559

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67ZE6esuUFA

Plenty of mistakes because I don't like to run a stage more than once at a time so there are at least parts where im not 100% which corner is next, even though its all familiar at this point.

Hillclimbing is pretty brutal. The speed is fun, but its quite frustrating not having a codriver. I cant remember half the course.

Speaking of which, is anyone driving without pacenotes? I've seen some streamers do it, but I dont think there is a single stage i could do halfway decent without them. I use the symbols as well, because there are some "tightens into" corners where you are way past your braking point by the time he gets to what it tightens to using normal callout distance. There seems to be a few corners with symbols in Sweden and Germany that the codriver skips if you are going too fast as well.

Qmass
Jun 3, 2003

I guess that works if you are running one stage over and over but I could never do it without the notes. Even with notes you still have to memorize the corners that are totally wrong... that right four near the finish on the long uphill greece stage is a motherfucker. Its like an off camber 3 at best, I hosed out so many times on that thing.

Yeah, that one has gotten me a few times too. There are a few of those. The "left 3" in Germany that is more like a "square left rocks on exit" gets me a lot. I believe its even a "caution 6 left into square right" going the other way. On uphill col du turini(?), the "left 4 slippy" that you need to treat as a 2 that also has a hole in the guardrail on the outside that instantly totals your car is also a bastard.

Its really a shame that this dirt rally was an "experiment" and didn't get strong continued support and DLC after it exited early access. It is such a good game but its so loving bare bones and lacking in certain areas. I was just doing the sweeden stages in career and the pace notes are all really quiet so you have to turn the engine noises way down to be able to hear them. On Finnish stages I have to change the pace note speed to normal or they are way ahead all the time, unlike every other location where I have them on earlier. I guess its cool that the 1% of people with VR got support post release but it kind of pisses me off to see patches come out filled with VR changes (another VR patch came out this week) and still experience so many dumb things in the main game.

I cling to the hope that a proper dirt rally 2 game is in the works because they generally seemed positive about the response to this game at codemasters. I would eat up location DLC for this game...

I can't think of anything to put here.
I wanted to share a great little moment I just experienced. My cousin asked me to watch her son for a few hours (I think he's like 9 or 10). I let him loose on my steam account and after going through a few other games we got to dirt rally. First I asked if he wanted a race on pavement or on dirt and he picked dirt which made me quite happy. Next I went to the car selection screen and let him have the controller. He scrolled all the way up to the 2010s before coming back and stopping on the 70s and commenting "that looks like a cool car." I tried to let him know about each of the different 70s cars but he just immediately cycled though the cars until he saw the Stratos again and said "I want that one, how do I pick it?" I was so very proud :kimchi: He mostly drove it off cliffs and into bushes and rocks, but he seemed to have fun. Maybe he'll even listen to my advice about slowing down a little someday. So I guess the moral of the story is that even kids who have never played a rally game before know the Stratos is the coolest car.
