I don't understand how any of the polls tighten like this. Just because Trump didn't poo poo himself in the immediate moment, doesn't mean his infinite volume of previous terrible poo poo is somehow invalid or irrelevant. How does his support ever increase if you look at his cumulative poo poo (or even Clinton's support decrease with Trump as the alternative)? Do people really change their minds on a whim like that?

Gawker was poo poo and I always hated and avoided it but what Theil did is bad for reasons that extend beyond the current case. Neither side has to be good in order for one outcome to be better than another.

The scary part about the Gawker closure and Peter Thiel is the hypocrisy of it all. Yes, Gawker was a lovely media group and deserves to close. But then you look at Peter, an openly gay man who financially backs people like Ted Cruz, Donald Trump and the likes, and spoke at the GOP national convention. For someone who claims to be all about protecting people's private rights, he sure supports a group that does the exact opposite.

Tracking polls are different from other polls. They poll the same group of people repeatedly over a period of time. If you're asking how polls could tighten, that's a different issue that Nate Silver's crew mulled over earlier in the week in their weekly talky thing.

Keep in mind that there is some margin of error to each poll, so one poll moving say 1% either way doesn't actually "mean" anything. Taken as a whole he's doing the worst he ever has... right about now. PEC has Clinton's win % the highest ever at 88% today. http://election.princeton.edu/

This. Nuance is a lost art it seems. I'm not defending Gawkers history as a tabloid, but the number of people overlooking out tacitly endorsing how this comeuppance came about is unsettling. How many of you would be okay if tomorrow Trump waged a similar campaign against CNN, NBC, or <insert other media outlet here>? Or if the Kochs did the same thing to a presidential candidate? I wouldn't be so quick to cheer that a billionaire decided to personally ruin an organization out of spite, and succeeded, just because you don't agree with that organization - the same tactic can be used tomorrow to demolish something that actually does some good in the world.
