PT6A posted:I read the article and I still feel the same way. It may have been a correct ruling according to Quebec law, I'm not disputing that; what I'm saying is that the Quebec law is, then, a violation of fundamental human rights (not those rights guaranteed by law, but rather the rights that all human beings should have regardless of the law). You could argue that the law against insulting the monarchy in Thailand is not a violation of human rights because the right to criticize the monarchy is not a right provided by law in Thailand, but it would be foolish to say it's not a violation of people's inherent right to freely express themselves. My point isn't that "It's the law, therefore it's moral", my point is that you retards haven't even bothered to read the logical conclusions and reasoning that the courts took in their analysis, and instead close your ears and yell "NUH UH FREEDOM OF SPEECH UNALIENABLE NUH UH". Read the case and analysis, debate those conclusions and moral reasonings instead of just reading the title.

Yes I did read the article, including the motivations they had for their decision. I disagree that Section 4 of the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms, the right to dignity, honour and reputation, has been materially harmed by the joke that was made in such a severe manner that it should supersede the right to freedom of expression, guaranteed by Section 3. The human rights tribunal disagreed, and the fact that there is legal room for them to disagree and impose such a fine, is a giant loving problem to be dealt with. So don't accuse me of not reading poo poo just because I disagree with your personal conclusions on the matter.

I'm in Reykjavik for the marathon this weekend and after going to buy beer in a store, I'm not sure I'm allowed to complain about Ontario any more. There was a line and a bouncer for the ability to buy incredibly overpriced (like everything Reykjavik) beer in a sterile workmanlike environment. Even the beer store is nicer, to say nothing of the LCBO.

I was there around the same time last summer and found that beer was ridiculously expensive. The best part of the bars there is that they have a game you can play where you can throw 2000 ISK to spin a wheel where you may end up with nothing, a pint, two pints, four pints, a shot, or a metre of beer (about eight pints). I watched some bros from the UK spin the wheel constantly in the "English pub" and they ended up with something close to three dozen beers, which would be worth about 65,000 ISK, or $720 CAD. They ended up giving away a lot of the beer since there were only four of them--I ended up getting two pints. Would go back to that country in a heartbeat though. Significantly nicer. And yeah don't get me wrong I like this country. Its gorgeous. The marathon along the sea was super nice. And the airfare is really cheap. I think you need to live here to have it be affordable though. Like from a lodging perspective my 6 nights in Paris in a couple weeks costs as much as 2 nights here.

Helsing posted:This is switching gears back to something the thread was gnawing on a day ago but I think this article is a reasonably good summation of why the 'PM Selfie' label has stuck. Because anyone not enamored with Trudeau has at least intuitively picked up on the fact that his media strategy is probably the only genuinely innovative thing about our new Prime Minister. RE: "PM Selfie" I'm starting to become curious whether Trudeau will ever actually spend his political capital in a significant way or if he's so interested in remaining popular (and remaining in power) that he's not going to enact any significant policies that would upset people. The pre-Paris summit with Premiers on climate change and carbon pricing was a good example of this. The PM was rebuffed by the Premiers and he was unable to make good on an election promise at that moment. Now we've seen with BC's recently revealed environment plan that that province will freeze its carbon tax and the province is regressing on climate issues. The PM remains incredibly popular. Good leadership on this issue in my opinion would be that Trudeau would cash in some of his political capital and bring in a carbon tax floor. This would certainly hurt his popularity in some areas. I wonder if we'll see that.
