I'm watching FunkDoc do emulator runs of arcade games I've owned PCBs of (including Bucky O'Hare and DD Crew)and everything looks like the flattest poo poo PS3 576i over RGB to PVM = despite the resolution everything gains depth previously unseen. Demons's Souls is one of many stunning examples. Taking care of input-lag doesn't do the trick for me. I'm lost. Gonna need a proper HD PVM sooner or later.

I can't say I care enough to go searching the Japanese side of the web for details, though. Harlock posted:My favorite Genesis title: NOT FOR RESALE The Star Fox cart I got from Babbages had a "NOT FOR RESALE" label on the top of it. I thought about taking it back since they obviously sold me some kind of used goods as new, but then I thought that a "not for resale" version might be something special and never did. From what I understand, it was the exact same code on the cart anyway.

Or a rental if it was from one of those time periods where renting was legal in Japan. I know there's some assorted variants floating around for different systems where rental versions had alternate art put on by the rental company, kind of like how 90's Hollywood Video would slap those huge silver stickers on everything.

I'm pretty sure the game rental situation in Japan was settled in the early 1980s long before the 16-bit era really kicked off. The ban said that game publishers could individually offer their games for rent, if they chose, but few were apparently interested in doing so.

On the subject of game soundtracks I've recently been wanting to talk about two songs in particular that just really bring me back to the time they were around. These are songs from two games that I never played, and never heard of, up until a couple years ago. I don't know what it is, but they really stood out the first time I played them. The first song is from Astal. https://youtu.be/tBOuuI-htzE?list=LL8THfCDgBfurdycMYJ_nnRg Something about this song in particular just really reminds of gaming in the mid-90s, at least some of the CD quality music. The second song is from Alundra. https://youtu.be/Ww-YhMfRvVY?list=LL8THfCDgBfurdycMYJ_nnRg Same thing with song, especially with the "oohah" parts. How did I miss this game when I was younger? What gaming music immediately brings you back?

I knew what song you would link from Astal even without listening, and yes, it's one of the best game soundtrack pieces I've heard too. If it were featured in some more known game, it'd be a classic tune.

I remember asking about this two years ago but Wonder Boy's battle music has a very similar melody to something I've heard on the radio. All I can recall is the faint voice of a woman singing in some language other than English (or otherwise she was impossible to understand in English) to that exact melody. I thought it was Enigma or one of those late 80s/early 90s Pure Moods or New Age compilation discs. Just vocalize the melody in a feminine voice and I swear to god that was the song!

FilthyImp posted:The SegaCD era usually hits me hard in the nostalgia. Road Avenger's weird music video OP (when ah ammmm..... On the rooooad!), Sonic CD, pretty much all of the Lunar soundtrack. On the SnES side, the complete soundstone ditty from Earthbound and Megaman X's music are pretty good, and the title screen music to Link to the Past is just epic. I've only had the opportunity to discover Sega CD and Saturn games recently, and another game soundtrack that blows me away is Batman Returns on the Sega CD. The first thing I thought when I heard it was "What is this music doing in this game?!?". It's too good.

I sit down and clear it every year or so. It's not perfect by any means, but it helped bridge the gap between Genesis and Saturn in my mind. Then I played Virtual Hydlide Into the Darkness is great, but I raise you with Sea of Clouds, which makes my hair stand on end every time I hear it https://youtu.be/5YweLBAh0nE

Kthulhu5000 posted:Maybe Enya's "Orinoco Flow"? Nah, this was definitely a song from the 90s or earlier. I can't remember anything else beyond the woman. I want to say it was an R&B or urban soul song it really had that kind of styling. Maybe I'll hear it one day walking around in a Sears or something but it's up there with Battle Against A Weak Opponent as "song that totally sounds like an early 90s pop song." Although Enya's Anywhere Is is totally the map screen music in Yoshi's Island.

Town themes in rpgs always take me back. I think because they are always either peaceful or upbeat, and also always catchy. There's games where I hated every song in the game except the town theme. Games with amazing town themes: Final Fantasy VI Illusion of Gaia Chrono Trigger Breath of Fire (this game has like three incredible town themes) Secret of Mana Earthbound Link to the Past 7th Saga Lufia Super Mario RPG Just off the top of my head. As an older person now I enjoy driving all around NY and Vermont looking for pretty, quaint towns to simply walk around with my kid and I wonder if that had something to do with it because it bores my wife to tears. YEAH OK IT'S PRETTY, THERE'S COBBLESTONE AND AL FRESCA DINING, DEFINITELY WORTH A THREE HOUR DRIVE Harlock posted:My favorite Genesis title: NOT FOR RESALE My favorite nes title is JALECO Chumbawumba4ever97 fucked around with this message at 06:34 on Aug 29, 2016 |

No dammit there's definitely a 90s pop/hip-hop song that has a woman doing backup vocals like "work/watch my body, something something body" aaaaaaaagh! That song is definitely based on Tequila but I frequently argue with my friends that video game music and 90s urban pop with its heavy use of short repetitive melodies, fm synth, and sampling sound indistinguishable. al-azad fucked around with this message at 14:05 on Aug 29, 2016 |

I feel like the reason Genesis/Game Gear stuff simply doesn't cost as much is that Sega allowed manufacture of like the Majesco variants and later TecToy and other clone systems pretty continuously since the Genesis was out for the Genesis, and well past when the Game Gear was dead for the Game Gear. So there's kind of an impression among people that there's always plenty of Genesis stuff around, the way you just didn't have with SNES stuff.

Apparently of all things it's the "Game" mode of my TV that's causing my N64 visual glitch The problem went away as soon as I connected the thing to another monitor/TV, and anything I tried on the original TV (XRGB, S-Video, even Composite!) had the issue. But setting it to something like "Standard" instead of "Game fixes that...at the expense of a lot more input lag which kind of really blows.

By the time you find the right box and proper packing materials, you're best bet is eBay. Unless you need the money yesterday, just put it up as a buy it now for 30 days, and offer shipping to Canada. Get accurate weight for shipping and and have it set as calculated. It'll sell. Edit: I hate selling my video games, but I have so many bills nowadays. But I have learned from my mom for years about selling antiques. And I know exactly what to do to get every dollar outta eBay. I'm sure a few others on here do too. No OBO either. Kramdar fucked around with this message at 01:51 on Aug 30, 2016 |
