Under usual Iowa transport laws, it'd be considered loaded if there were shells on the sling, but a permit to carry means I can have it in the car 'loaded'. (Never carry an actually loaded shotgun in the car.) Yes I plan on spending a good amount of time making sure I'm familiar with all the laws. It was a four hour class and packed with a lot of information. Utah is a very pro-gun state and when applicable and a state law exists it will supersede the federal law. Some recent changes include ones personal vehicle to be viewed as an extension of ones home and you can carry a loaded weapon in a vehicle. Utah is an open carry state, meaning you can legally carry a firearm in plain site as long as you are two actions from firing. There has also been anti-harassment laws put in place that if you are being harassed for either open or (legally) carrying concealed the person making the complaints can be issued a citation. I don't see myself going anywhere outside the state to carry so really I'm only going to be familiar with the ins and outs for Utah law. I'm going to look into a good firearm for carrying. I was amazed at how inexpensive the Ruger LCP (380 caliber) was. Small enough that in a pocket holster it could be considered a wallet or smart phone. My buddy has a Shield which is a single stack 9mm that is about the same size I'm gonna check out and try firing.

Broke 150k today. This is by far the longest I've ever owned the same car in terms of miles driven - got it with 66k. Still on the original clutch and CV joints, though the passenger CV joint is rattling a bit going straight, and sounds like rice crispies when I'm backing up. Boot's not split, so I'm guessing it didn't have enough grease from the factory, or just wore out. And goddamn work pissed me off. They were running way behind - bad enough that I didn't get my 8-10pm route until almost 9pm. And it started nearly 30 miles away, so I had to fly low to get everything delivered on time. Got my last package dropped at 9:58. Even if the warehouse is running behind, I still get dinged by their stupid computer system if a package is late, then I have to argue with outsourced "support" in another country about why it shouldn't be held against me. Goober Peas posted:I've had especially bad luck with Amazon Prime the last couple of years, especially when the last leg is USPS. Amazon seems to give even fewer fucks than USPS when I complain. This was delivered by an independent contractor (i.e. one of my coworkers, just out of a different warehouse). I found it in front of the leasing office (half a mile away and on a different street). Along with about a dozen other packages. The leasing office isn't open until Monday, and this really isn't a great neighborhood (definitely not one where you want to leave potentially thousands of dollars worth of stuff piled up in front of a door that faces a street). I know a lot of people who've been fired for doing exactly that, and that's the exact reason why a lot of leasing offices flat out refuse to accept Amazon packages. I've run into a lot of straight up hostility when I walk into a leasing office with my Amazon shirt on, even if I'm just walking in to ask "hey, I have a package going to apt <x>, how do I get to that building?" or "hey I have a delivery, how do I get past the gate?", and been bitched out a lot of times now for coworkers just dumping all their packages at the office when nobody is looking. randomidiot fucked around with this message at 06:48 on Aug 29, 2016 |

Bought a new project yesterday, a Mercedes 190E 2.6: A planned 2.5-hour drive home took nearly 7 because one of the rubber coolant hoses between the rad and the block decided to split, then it's replacement wouldn't go on properly and leaked heavily, at one point in the night developing such a leak that it drained nearly as fast as I could refill it. Trying to jam a rubber hose leaking scalding-hot liquid into place with one hand while screwing a hose clamp shut with one of those 4-inch long screwdrivers (because it's the only thing that will fit in the cramped as hell engine bay) at night, on the side of the highway, isn't much fun Luckily a couple of truckers stopped and lent a hand and some thick work gloves, thank God for the helpful types Total cost 800 euros plus about 10 for replacement coolant, and probably several years of my lifespan. lovely picture of it parked at home this morning:

My brother's '08 GTI with ~60k miles took a poo poo yesterday. Started stumbling and blowing smoke out the rear. He thought the motor was toast, but after a bit of looking, we were betting it was a stuck injector. I'm too far away and have work that I can't ditch, so he was stuck towing it to a German car specialist near him. The shop diagnosed it as a stuck fuel injector. Their cost for the repair is $640. I thought that was a bit high, but not out of line for a shop, since the injector itself is ~$120 and I was guessing it's a 3-4 hour job. Does it sound out of line? I'm really wishing he was closer. If he was, I'd just replace all 4 injectors and the coil packs for the same monetary outlay.

http://www.hotrod.com/articles/hrdp-0403-turbonique/ quote:So what is a microturbine? Simply stated, it’s a small version of a gas turbine with one major difference: special Thermolene monopropellant fuel. The term monopropellant describes a fuel that will ignite and burn without the presence of atmospheric oxygen. As a point of comparison, the nitromethane used in Top Fuel dragsters is a semi-monopropellant. It requires a little outside oxygen for complete combustion, but only a small fraction of what is required to burn gasoline, alcohol, or kerosene. Most gas turbines run on petroleum-based fuels that require plenty of air to support combustion. They take in atmospheric air at the front and compress it to a high temperature and pressure. Fuel is then sprayed into this hot air, which ignites, creating the high-pressure gases that drive the turbine wheel and make torque. The problem is that a typical air-breathing gas turbine uses over half of its total turbine power to drive the compressor. Turbonique engineers sidestepped the problem and simply replaced the weighty, expensive, and inefficient compressor with a high-pressure storage bottle containing Normal Propyl Nitrate (Thermolene), a stable, milk-white liquid fuel that brings its own oxygen to the party and that moves the engine into the category of a rocket because it can run without the benefit of atmospheric oxygen. When the Thermolene is introduced to the combustion chamber at 600 psi and ignited by a glorified spark plug connected to an on/off switch, the immediate result is an intense release of hot gases to spin the turbine blades. Anti-swirl turbine wheel vanes prevented flames from exiting the tailpipe, but a special wheel was optional for “spectacular flaming night runs.”

Don't know anything about late golfs but I know the early crossflow heads made an annoying habit of wrapping the intake runners around the head and eventually closing them off so you couldn't access the injectors or sparkplugs without taking the intake off. I can't imagine VW made something easier as time went on so that sounds vaguely accurate.

They did that with the 2.3l NG motor, but the spark plugs were on the side of the head, so all it stopped you from doing was pulling the valve cover. And even then, the intake was a two piece, so if you needed to access the injectors, you just polled 3-4 bolts and you could remove the top half of the intake manifold. Hey guys I love spending money on silly things so I am currently debating whether to replace my outgoing Pilot Super Sports with Pilot Sport Cup 2's, I have been pretty happy with the PSS's but all my GT3 and GT4 friends are mocking my poverty spec tires and I want to know if this is a stupid idea or an astronomically stupid idea for a daily driver with weekend autocrossing/canyon carving needs (and a goal to get to the track a couple times later this year or early next). E92 M3, I live in Los Angeles, weather is of no concern whatsoever as the car doesn't get used if it looks like rain and that's pretty predictable out here. My wife thinks I should get the Sport Cup 2's because she's cool as gently caress.

That is an incredibly frivolous economic decision you could make. The sensible choice would be to get the Sport Cup 2's on a set of dedicated track wheels.

Turbo Tim Employment Update (TTEU): until it gets colder outside, I can do something like one shift every 3 weeks on Saturday. Once it gets colder more people are willing to work the front of the shop as receptionist or whatever so I can do more Saturday shifts at that point. I mentioned to him that I can also help out with any IT/networking/computer needs in the shop and he said "that, my friend, i can find you work for....." so, cool! I plan on starting a thread about an unqualified backyard wrencher working in a 5-star garage when I have enough material to do so, but until then, I'll spare you any content-free updates
