On the surface this may hold some truth, but it's necessary to give Meshuggah a deeper analysis concerning subjects like originality and entertainment. The tones are always similar, and in this way, you can say that all their material is the same. What makes this band unique however is their manipulation of patterns, and how every instrument is played as a percussive element. So while we aren't hearing any new tones, I do assert that the composition is altogether new and intricate. So you're kinda' right... but you're also a hater. Either way, this rocks and I'll definitely buy this album. (Note, Koloss really didn't do it for me for some reason. Maybe it just sounded like a jam session, I don't know. This new song makes me eager for new Meshuggah again

Not sure if it really qualifies as metal anymore, but well, the harsh vocals are back and this doesn't really sound like the Shelter record: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwE5FG-pIdk New Alcest, the album comes out September 30. This is one hell of a good start. One of the best songs I've heard from them.

I'm really excited about this, but I really hope that the image of audio mixing software Anderson posted on the Sculptured page doesn't turn out to be from this new band. I want a new Sculptured. I've been listening to The Mantle a lot lately, but goddamn did Haughm sound like a pretentious douchebag in the Facebook announcement post. Never call yourself the visionary. Especially since Anderson was apparently the guy who translated his "vision" into actual music since he was the one who had studied music.

I'm not a metal guy (more punk, hardcore, and country), but I loving love Death Wolf, and can't wait until their new album. But when I listen to black metal, it really doesn't do it for me (mostly the vocals). Ditto for death metal (again, mostly the vocals). I loved the first three Danzig records, and seem to have a taste for drone and doom, but don't know much about it, really. I like Russian Circles live (and seem them every chance I get), but the records kind of bore me. Who else should I check out?

You might wanna check Amebix, as they also helped shaping Death Wolf's sound.

There's a lot of variety in death and black metal, some are more shouty and closer to punk vocals.

For those, check out The Cult Is Alive, F.O.A.D., Dark Thrones and Black Flags, and Circle the Wagons. The vocals on those are pretty clean-ish.

Thanks, everyone - I already know and love Earth, Amebix, Tau Cross (Rob from Amebix's new band); I've got some Melvins stuff already, and I'll definitely check out Darkthrone. As for vocals - I don't like them to sound forced, for lack of a better term. Lemmy, Rob Amebix, etc., never sounded forced to me, but I don't dig on the death-metal grunting.

A lot of first wave black metal has less growly vocals and is more closely linked to punk and hardcore than later stuff, e.g https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZ6HIg4Hto0, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5pvINJNZZ4 You'll like Venom too if you like Amebix and Motorhead. Some death metal has vocals that are still harsh but more shouty, especially earlier stuff, for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tQzJK9e8aA, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zu8JM37S9jo, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfdIHl6KTIs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Whl4rcUnqIM

Try Corrosion of Conformity. They started out as a punk band before going into sludge metal. Blind is probably their latest album that had a punk influence to it, and it's also one of their best, if not their best. Try Crowbar while you're at it. Someone else can probably make a better album recommendation than I can, I barely listen to them anymore. FWIW, late Black Flag has had an influence on the sludgier side of doom, so if you're into that kind of punk, you could probably get into that subgenre. 22 Eargesplitten fucked around with this message at 07:34 on Aug 31, 2016 |
