I do recall a former Welfare minister extolling the virtues of young people getting the gently caress out of the country. Can't remember his/her name though.

Seeing some folks speculating that his decision to leave may revolve around the party taking a firmer line on refusing to appeal the apple ruling than he was willing to. He put out a piece in the sindo calling for a softly softly approach highlighting concerns that not appealing could threaten the corporation tax level, seemingly at odds with more robust statements from Shortall and Murphy who said appealing would be immoral.

I like how this whole EU Competition ruling has seemingly turned a huge section of the Irish establishment eurosceptic overnight, something that years of austerity failed to do.

I think Murphy&Shorthall's more left-wing economic positions were always in conflict with Donnelly. I know support for the LUAS drivers was an issue, and Apple's tax this week is being mentioned as being the straw that broke the camel's back.

It's a shame, because I think without Donnelly dragging the SDs slightly to the middle they may fall gradually into the general-left-wing milieu. Where they'll struggle for attention/support against the wide variety of parties already there.

I don't think he'll remain as a true independent after tasting the national stage in the last election. I'd wager hes more likely to join the IA than FF, though.

Any chance of hearing one of these horror stories.

Have none myself on Apple, but I can take up the mantle on Cork call centre horror stories in general seeing as nobody else has appeared to.

During a lamentably extended period of my 20's, I worked in a call centre in Cork named Abtran, aka Scabtran, aka (my best friend's creation) Abtranistan. Now, Abtran are quite often in the news due to entering into lucrative contracts with big name companies such as Irish Water, Taxi Regulator, and, painfully, Sky Digital; outside of that, they are renowned in Cork for having an extremely high staff turnover rate due to their lovely conditions and even shittier pay.

While in employment in Abtran:
-your toilet breaks are timed;
-you are not allowed to talk to the people sitting next to you; you must be constantly on the phone, making each call a sale;
-if you are on certain departments of a contract (I'll use my own experience on the New Customer department of the Sky Digital contract for example) you are expected to have a minimum of 60% sales out of your calls, every day, every week, every month. If you have even one day where you don't get 60%, you get hauled in to a meeting about your sales technique by management. Oh, and people calling the wrong department work against your 60%. It's your fault, even when it's not;
-even though you're entitled to up to 50 days of holidays per year, the first weekday of every month is a mad scramble by people with even only 3 days left to use to book the days off before they're gone. If you don't get the days booked on time, you don't get time off at all. No questions, no debate; if you don't fight for the time off, you don't get it;
-you MUST make every call a sale, even when there's absolutely no chance of it being a sale;
-all your calls are monitored, even personal calls;
-no internet access outside of Sky Digital's website;
-the suggestion box is the shredder (I poo poo you not. I'm not even being sarcastic on this one, and the Team Leaders certainly weren't either);
- if you get harrassed or yelled at by a customer, you have to just take it. You can't hang up on them, no matter how bad it gets;

I could go on, but I think I've said enough. I'm waiting for the day that a breaking news alert will pop up on my phone telling me that someone in there has gone apeshit and killed their colleagues. It's the kind of environment that fosters that mindset.

So how's the commute?

Increasing chatter that FG may have officially lost patience with John Halligan who's always been one of the more grumpy IA TDs. Talk of him leaving government soonish over the expansion of coronary services at Wexford Hospital (which he stumped for but which an advisory report say is unnecessary). RTE saying there may be a deal on a second review but the Irish Times have some grumpier FG sources, what with recent clashes with the IA over Apple and the roll-over on not pushing for a unified cabinet vote on the 6th amendment repeal there may be some angling in FG for Kenny to take a tougher stance with the Independents.

I don't really know if it is an opportune time. Pros, getting in before the budget, cons, getting in before a budget with a coalition government that is probably not going to last very much longer.

Then again if TDs like Halligan who are essentially fringe or single-issue TDs are getting pushed out maybe the coalition is more likely to survive the next year.

Opportune timing for FG, I meant. They can play hardball with Halligan knowing they have a possible replacement in the wings.

For Donnelly, yeah its a bit more questionable. Hes clearly very interested in getting into government, but if it falls in the short/medium-term will it have a negative effect on his standing in Wicklow? Harris already hoovers up a lot of the pro-government support in Greystones, I'm not sure theres room for a second "government" TD there.

"The Indo posted:

I Will Rain Hell On This Government

The resignation of Minister of State John Halligan appeared inevitable last night after he rounded on Fine Gael in an explosive interview with the Sunday Independent.

In a dramatic intervention that will throw the Government into its biggest crisis since it was formed four months ago, Mr Halligan has accused Fine Gael of a "stitch-up" and three Fine Gael ministers of "dirty politics".

...

In hard-hitting comments that will further strain already difficult relations with Fine Gael, the junior minister said: "I am angry with Fine Gael in total. I am really angry. I am angry with the people I negotiated with - Michael Noonan, Simon Coveney and Leo Varadkar."

But he also said: "I am steadfast in my refusal to be intimidated by Fine Gael. I will not back down."

He added: "I don't want to bring down the Government. But if it takes that, I will have to."

The junior minister said: "I am not going to be f***ed over by anybody. I don't care if it is the man on the street or some guy threatening me. And you can print that.

"Somebody said to me during the week: 'Sometimes you have got to bite down and suck

"Well, John Halligan does not bite down and suck up for anybody. And you can print that. And I don't give a drat. I'll face down anybody."

Mr Halligan turned on Finance Minister Mr Noonan, Housing Minister Mr Coveney, and also Health Minister Simon Harris with whom he is still in negotiations.

He said his Independent Alliance colleague Shane Ross had witnessed the agreement with Mr Noonan to provide a second cath lab in Waterford.

He added that the Transport Minister "will back" his version of events. If Mr Noonan denied this, he said, then "he is telling lies".

Mr Halligan also rounded on Independent Alliance colleague Kevin 'Boxer' Moran, accusing him of being an "idiot" for suggesting that he should accept a watered-down deal on offer for Waterford hospital.

There were indications this weekend that Mr Harris might offer Mr Halligan a second review of the Waterford hospital decision next year. But it will be difficult for Fine Gael to move on after the Independent Alliance minister's interview with the Sunday Independent this weekend.

In that interview, Mr Halligan said: "What they should do now, if they believe I am destabilising the Government, is put me out. F*** 'em. Put me out. I don't care. If that's what they want to do, put me out. But I know what I am doing is right and honourable."

Halligan has gone a bit mad

Yeah, there where reports a second review had been agreed to placate him. If this his attempt to play the big man and spin this as him defeating the government by standing up to them it may backfire, that kind of talk from a cabinet minister is going to rankle more than a few people in FG who's patience is already wearing thin.

Fallen Rib
My gf had some talk-show on on the background on RTE yesterday evening and they were talking about the bus strikes and I swear to god I could have reached through the tv and smacked one of the guys they had on.

The way that people react to strikers/public sector workers in Ireland is completely hosed. There is always, always some moron that says "Well other people are working for x a week for y hours so you should be happy with z", never-mind Dublin is one of the most loving expensive cities in Europe in the middle of a rental crisis, which, as a matter of fact, is creating a massive transfer of wealth from the working/middle class to the upper classes.

There seems to be a complete deficit of eloquent speakers on these kinds of issues who can just stand up and make a cogent argument highlighting the benefits of strong unions, tackling income inequality or to say that we should be striving for a society where everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic status/qualification, can work 40-45 hour weeks and afford to buy a home and to start a family. If there ever was some kind of concept of "solidarity" in Ireland it seems long loving dead at this stage and people will just poo poo all over unions the second it personally inconveniences them.

The government's completely inability to do anything (edit: substantial) for renters is annoying me as well. Was listening to Newstalk the other day and they had the housing minister on and when he was asked about renters he was like "Urhrhhhhrhrh .... well you know ... we have an action plan in six months time". Yeah loving right you do, your action plan is to sit in your office and fist yourself to climax while the working/middle class get hosed.

So that when FG are canvassing next they can tell older voters whos children have had to emigrate that FG are now doing their best to bring the children home.

It's completely ridiculous on a practical level of course, but you can't deny theres some cold hard electoral logic behind it. The inequality of a two tier tax system, a lack of jobs, a lack of available suitable housing...why let these mere "facts" get in the way of a good vote winning exercise for FG?

It wouldn't be the most terrible idea in the world. Unlike the UK the Irish government is actually dictated to by Brussels technocrats. It's also the best way out of the Euro. I mean, there are a lot of negatives, but unlike the UK which was in the best position imaginable and decided to shoot itself to spite Germany with the bill for cleaning their blood out of the carpet, Ireland potentially has something to gain.

Which station was this? The Irish establishment and public sector will never give up the euros in their bank accounts, and their ability to go on 5+ trips a year to Tenerife/Greece. I just don't see it happening. The State Aid ruling by the Commission might have turned some people Eurosceptic overnight, but I feel the Euro/trade/tourism aspects of membership is just too attractive to a lot of people.

6 months seems optimistic, some of the murmuring from the FG back benches seems to favour a change of leadership sooner rather than later (though they've been saying that since before Christmas) and I'm not sure FF have the stomach to sit out another scandal like they've done this week - especially if their 11 point polling leads dips after they sit out tomorrows vote

Senior Fine Gael figures believe Enda Kenny will quit as party leader within days as he faces the unedifying prospect of a no confidence motion, writes RTÉ's Mícheál Lehane.

The Taoiseach indicated yesterday at his parliamentary party meeting that the leadership issue could be discussed next week but many want it dealt with immediately.

However, a request by Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar to bring forward the timing of the next parliamentary party meeting was not agreed to.

Party Chairman Martin Heydon said a meeting would take place at the usual time in Leinster House next Wednesday.

It’s being viewed as highly significant that the two leading contenders to replace Mr Kenny, Simon Coveney and Mr Varadkar, both addressed the meeting with an almost identical message.

It was a simple and direct one: the party needed to be ready for an election from now on.

It was taken as a coded warning to the Taoiseach to prepare to depart office given that he has made it clear he will not lead the party into the next election.
