Jesus Christ, Clair, do you have ANY faith in anyone? Has ANYONE gotten the drat badge from you before us? Also: Skarmory is the best flying type ever. I think it might be one of the faster steel types, that isn't Scizor.

Yeah. Clair got the Gym because she was the closest thing to an effective trainer they had after Lance left, even though she doesn't have a good grasp on the moral code that they're supposed to be upholding.

Silegna posted:Jesus Christ, Clair, do you have ANY faith in anyone? Scizor is actually slower than Skarmory, though Mega Scizor is slightly faster. Durant is somehow the fastest (non-Mega) Steel type by a significant margin, which conjures the frightening mental image of being swarmed by foot-long steel ants. Skarmory is pretty cool, but I've never used one. I also keep forgetting that it was introduced in Gen 2, not Gen 3. I have the same problem with Corsola.

Update 35.5: Rocket Lollies Pokemon Gym Brr, it's time to take on Pryce's Gym. It's had a bit of a redesign, with some fun sliding puzzles. Yaaaaaaaaay. : As you'll find, his attacks will make you shiver in this freezing Gym. Are you ready to be frozen solid? I mean--keep up a hot fighting spirit against ice! Being the first puzzle, it isn't very difficult. Really, none of them are, but you might take a minute to figure it out. All you need to do is slide one ice block into another to "lock" them together. If you mess up, well, that's what the doors are for. Boop. Alright, last one. Can you figure it out? Yeah, just that. Hopefully the battle is a bit harder. : I, too, have seen and suffered much in my life. Since I am your elder, let me show you what I mean. I have been training Pokémon since before you were born. I do not lose easily. I, Pryce--the Winter Trainer--shall demonstrate my power! Gym Leader Battle Pryce has changed slightly to not be too much of a pushover, being, like, three levels higher than before. He also uses Hail and Rest strategies to be a bit annoying, but it's better than Hypnosis. Wonderful. If Seel didn't set up Hail, then Piloswine definitely will, so if you're unlucky, you'll be screwed over by Snow Cloak. Still crazy weak to Water and Grass moves though. Otherwise, not particularly notable. Final Pokemon! Dewgong hasn't changed too much, it still sleeps, still hits you with Ice attacks, but now it can talk in its sleep and keep hitting you. You just gotta wear it down and take it out. "I'm not giving up yet." Survey says you're done old man. Pokemon Gym : With your strong will, I know you will overcome all life's obstacles. You are worthy of this Badge! : It also lets your Pokémon use Whirlpool to get across real whirlpools. And this... This is a gift from me! : It summons a hailstorm that lasts for five turns. The hailstorm damages all types except Ice. When the ice and snow melt, spring arrives. You and your Pokémon will be together for many years to come. Cherish your time together! Man, that's seven badges done so I'm feeling pretty great! Nothing could bring me down after this! I should listen to the radio and find a song to reflect my mood. Rocket Killed the Radio Star : ...We finally did it! Where could the boss be, I wonder? I wonder if he heard this announcement... I'm just trying to become the champion, why do I have to get dragged along into this bullshit? Like, I'd care more if I was saving the world from end of existence. But this is just clearing out a rat infestation. : I was told not to let anyone pass but Team Rocket! Do you understand? You are only allowed to come through when you are wearing the cool black uniform for Team Rocket! Goldenrod City Well, I have been dying to expand my wardrobe. : Then we ran out of uniforms. I heard this studio has some, so I decided to "borrow" one. Since you are here, why don't you change as well? : Oh, but you shouldn't try to scare people walking around looking like that, OK? Oh yeah, we're the baddest and blandest team around. In a nice change from GSC, we can move around in a TR outfit for a bit to infiltrate the tower. It even changes our hair if you're playing as a boy. Oh, why am I still playing Japanese HeartGold? Uhhhhh... "the mission!" We can't leave town while in this outfit, nor can we Fly away or anything like that. If you did hack your game to enter a battle in this outfit... nothing would change. Oh well! : You Gym Trainers can be a problem. Stay in the Gym and stay out of the way! : We, as Gym Trainers, will never allow Team Rocket to do nasty things here in our city! Rocket Killed the Radio Star "uniform!" : Go on ahead! Rival Theme Aw crap. "What are you doing here?" : No way... You think you're strong now that you look like them? That's foolish! You shouldn't wear those things! "Then battle with me!" What a crazy turn of events. I'm all hot and bothered now. : You could spoil our plan. I have to inform the others... : Huh! A typical idea of the meek! No matter. I'll let you handle this. I have to defeat the Dragon Tamer... What's his name...? Lance! After that...it will be your turn. Be ready for it! I'll be waiting. Rocket Killed the Radio Star There not much that's changed, so straight to the top we go! : We have decided to broadcast wonderful shows to praise Team Rocket! Everyone, I don't want to hear you complain. Just do a good job to... : Who are you? ...Oh no, it's you again, Kotone? "region to support Team Rocket!" : This time I won't hold back! Give me all you've got! Yeah, Petrel is the five Koffing, one Weezing trainer. Fuuuuuuuuck that. : We stashed the real Director in the underground warehouse. It's at the far end of the Goldenrod Tunnel. I am a nice guy. I will give you the Basement Key to get to the underground warehouse. Take it with gratitude! Okay everyone, say bye Petrel, cause we're never going to seem him again. Anyway, to the Underground! Rival Theme : What I told you before was to deceive you. I thought it would let me tail you, and it would lead me to Lance. Well, he never showed up. ...No matter. I was planning to beat you after Lance, but since you are here, I will repay my debts! Uhuh. Maybe I'll go over your team when it's actually ready. The door puzzle has changed for the better, thankfully. Press the coloured switch to open the respective doors of that coloured room. It's very welcome. Rocket Killed the Radio Star Okay, time for the boss rush. : Aren't you the one who got in our way at the SLOWPOKE Well? I see... You're doing all this because you want to make me angry. Be careful! But since you seem to wish it, I'll show you the full extent of a Team Rocket Executive's wrath! He replaces the Team Rocket fortress. And is even less interesting. "wrath grow..." I'm sure. Two executives left. "Mahogany Town?" : This time... Hee hee hee. This time...it looks like you're really all alone. All alone... So it should be quite easy. Bring it! Let's finish this! : I fought hard, but I still lost... "bad things!" : Feh... People like you will never in a million years understand our brilliance! It's too bad... I've really come to respect your strength. Okay, we've got a more climactic location to face the head honcho, but are they more interesting than Rocket Executive We've Never Met Before? The result may surprise you. : You must be quite the Trainer. We intend to take over this Radio Tower and officially announce our comeback. That should bring our boss Giovanni back from his solitary training. We are going to regain our former glory... I will not allow you to interfere with our meticulous plans! Team Rocket Battle (Archer may be from the AA-11 Archer, a short air-to-air missile from the Soviet Union first used in 1984. Apollo may be named after the Apollo space program, which helped America win the Space Race, as well as the Greek god of the sun and knowledge. He's even an archer. Ehhhhhh?) So now that the leader of Neo Team Rocket has a face and a unique appearance and name, does it make him any more interesting than nameless executive? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm no. "reaches Giovanni!" : That's impossible... I don't really give him a fair fight since I have a Feraligatr and I was just real bored of Team Rocket by now. Bugger off now, m8. : Our dreams have come to naught. I was not up to the task after all. Like Giovanni has done before me, I will disband Team Rocket here today. Farewell... And that's the last we see of Team Rocket. Depending on your version, you'll get either the Rainbow Wing or Silver Wing. What do we do with those items? Well, unlike Crystal, we don't head straight off to say hi to the cover legendary, but we will be doing something with it pretty soon. But until then, I'll catch you later! It's not that much of a split, they're completely separate gods. Helios was the son of Hyperion, Zeus' uncle; when Zeus rebelled against Kronos, Helios allied with his cousin and helped overthrow the Titans. Apollo was the son of Zeus, born well after the Titanomachy. The Iliad and Odyssey both mention Apollo and Helios as unrelated deities. Apollo was the God of Light (and a great many other things like music, poetry, archery, disease, prophecy, colonists, sudden death of men, etc) but he was never the Sun.

That's true, but Apollo and Helios weren't conflated even into Roman times; Helios was worshiped as Sol (later Sol Invictus), still separate from Apollo. The last stand of Hellenic paganism was Emperor Julian's Ode to King Helios in 362 AD, which still separates Helios and Apollo (well, technically it was an attempt to collapse Greek polytheism into a type of monotheism able to fight back against Christianity; one that proclaimed Helios as the one true god and all the other gods, including Athena, Dionysus and Zeus, to be aspects of him...but since Julian had to argue that Apollo was part of Helios, the two were obviously still separate deities in the common religion). The two weren't conflated until the medieval period, long after the religion was dead.

At the end of the day one of the big myths around Apollo was driving the sun in chariot form across the sky. That is close enough to being a sun god for practical intents and purposes.

Update 36: Battle Tower - Level 30 Inside Battle Tower Aloha everyone. We're back to take on the Battle Tower, using Pokemon chosen by YOOOOOOOOOOOOOU. Let's meet the crew shall we? First up is Doomguy the Houndoom by FoolyCharged. Pikasav doesn't let me put in spaces for the nicknames and I can't change them since they have different IDs. Oh well! It's a strong special attacker that relies on Sunny Day to really lay in the hurt. And Double Team for emergencies to match with Brightpowder. Next up is Pester the shiny Smeargle by SystemLogoff. It's basically a support Pokemon with the ability to reflect special attacks if need be. If we play our cards right, this beagle is unkillable. Finally, we have our ace in the hole, Allen the Delibird by Trick Question, that can do only what a Delibird can, steal items, freeze the opponent and blow them up with gifts. Beautiful. Same as before, face 7 trainers in a row to get a prize. Let's go! We've still got the same pool of trainers as before, so you'll probably see quite a few name repeats. But at least we have 21 new Pokemon to face. Our first opponent is Lanturn, with Surf, Thunder, Rain Dance and Flail with a Gold Berry. It uses its weather to dangerous effect. Gen 5.png. At least after the AI sets up their weather, they won't go for it on the next turn, so we can set ours back up. So Surf doesn't do a whole lot, while Solarbeam will. Couple turns of back and forth weather and it is down. Copycat! Houndoom knows Crunch, Flamethrower, Shadow Ball and Sludge Bomb with a Charcoal. A pretty mixed moveset for a mixed Pokemon. We can't really do much but that's what our other team members are for. It makes sense to Mirror Coat that Flamethrower. ...poo poo Alright, nothing to worry about, we've still got our backup. ...poo poo Okay, so that didn't go so well, but we just had a bit of bad luck. Let's try again. Ursaring has Headbutt, Leer, Protect and Earthquake with a Gold Berry. It's got high Attack, so watch out. Ooh baby Easy enough, but now we face Tentacruel, with Sludge Bomb, Bubblebeam, Wrap and Toxic holding a King's Rock. Ahah! You fell right into my trap. Now the tag team will take you down! Open your package of DOOOOOOOOOOOM ...SHIIIIIIIT YES, now you shall feel my wrath! ...yeah we're hosed. We can't even get a good item. Where's the Life Orb, the Choice Specs? It's all trash! I can't even use Mirror Coat as it refuses to use Bubblebeam. Soooo yeah, back to the drawing board. I'll be honest, I knew I wouldn't get very far with a Smeargle and a Delibird, so we're replacing them. First up is Deathstar the shiny Starmie by Some Numbers, with Surf, Thunder Wave, Confuse Ray and Recover, holding Leftovers. We've got some parafusion going on, which will shut some Pokemon down, as well as some longevity. Should be good. Our final level 30 Pokemon is Grasshole the Jumpluff by Mr. Locke, with Headbutt, Encore, Leech Seed and Sleep Powder, holding a Gold Berry. This does exactly what you think and oh it is wonderful. So seven trainers. Easy. Ah gently caress. We start off with a goddamn Blissey holding some goddamn Leftovers, with the goddamn moves Toxic, Protect, Reflect and Softboiled. Indeed, it has no way to attack, but unless you have a Poison or Steel type, you're going down, cause holy poo poo does this thing not die. We do have ways of dealing with it, but it'll be slow going. Smart lad. Now we face a Primeape, with Karate Chop, Low Kick, Reversal and Focus Energy, holding a Miracleberry. It just hits pretty hard and maybe crits. I don't really find out about movesets beforehand, so there's some surprises while recording. Might not always work out, mind you. Grasshole does what Grasshole do. Cool. Last Pokemon from this trainer is a Gengar, with Night Shade, Giga Drain, Thief and Lick, holding a Gold Berry. Man, is that really the best special coverage Gengar got back in the day? Doomguy handles no problem. And thank gently caress for that. On yer bike. Christ that was only one trainer... Poliwrath has Surf, Submission, Fissure and Double Team and holds a Brightpowder. This guy can be a dick. Don't let it be. Oh look at all those Psychic moves I have. I'll just use the rest of my moves instead. From there, I can sun it to death, so our next opponent is a Lapras, with the moves Water Gun, Icy Wind, Strength and Rain Dance, holding a Leftovers. Bit weird, but they're not all winners. Out with this future metagame of yours. Finally we have an Espeon with Confusion, Swift, Psych Up and Toxic. That's pretty meh. Trainer three! We're doing pretty well. Porygon2 knows Tri Attack, Hyper Beam, Psychic and Recover, with a Brightpowder. Let's see what it goes for. Yeah, it's not gonna have much luck against Deathstar. Neither is this Dugtrio, with Earthquake, Mud Slap, Sludge Bomb and Slash, holding a King's Rock. Finally, we have Machamp, with Cross Chop, Fire Punch, Ice Punch and Earthquake, holding a Miracleberry. These are the Pokemoments I live for, gg, no re. We got repeating dialogue pretty quick. Marowak has Earthquake, Bonemerang, Return and Hyper Beam with a Thick Club, giving it 144 Attack. That's pretty dangerous, so don't let it do stuff. Number five already. The team is doing pretty good. Definitely an odd choice here, but I approve. Fearow knows Peck, Swift, Pursuit and Mirror Move, holding Brightpowder. That's, uh, wow, a moveset alright. Moving on... I am, are you? Oh, uh, you are. This team does not handle fast Electric types very well. Electrode knows Thunder, Light Screen, Protect and Explosion, with a Brightpowder. Yikes. Buuuuuut you just sealed your fate. Phew. Uhhhh? Well this is the final trainer. We're not really seeing many new Pokemon, but our team is doing pretty fantastic. I'm glad I didn't have to create some new Pokemon like I did for level 10. That was a special challenge in its own right, but everything from here on should be pretty manageable with the Pokemon you guys have selected. Stop it. Heyyyyyy. Starmie has Surf, Psychic, Thunder Wave and Recover, holding Leftovers. Sound familiar? But aside from a tricky Marowak, we have completed the Level 30 challenge. And our reward? Coooooooool. Pokemon we didn't see included were... a Bellossom with Solarbeam, Giga Drain, Sunny Day and Double Team, holding a Brightpowder. A Crobat with Wing Attack, Toxic, Confuse Ray and Attract, holding a Gold Berry. A Jolteon with Thunderbolt, Pin Missile, Mud Slap and Quick Attack, holding a Miracleberry. And finally Jynx with Blizzard, Lovely Kiss, Dream Eater and Attract, holding a Gold Berry. That's it for the Battle Tower for now, we shall be back for Level 50. Maybe the reward might get better in future? Please?
