quote:

The information in this update was absolutely necessary in needing 100% certainty, so here's what happened.

After PAX East, I was unaware that I was operating with a hard drive that was failing.
This hard drive contained 100% of all FleetCOMMs source, assets, builds, Steam data, payment data, refund data.
Here's what I was able to recover.

FleetCOMM's C/C++/Lua/OpenGL core
FleetCOMM's texture and shader assets
Here's what I lost.

Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 (can re-write all of this, will take time)
The linux build (can be re-written, since the source code is portable and tested previously on linux)
The MacOSX build (can be re-written, and was previously tested on a Mac)
And I really don't have time to apologize, grovel, etc etc etc. As the person who has 80% of the total 100% investment in this project (thats just $, and I'm not even counting the labor and time I personally invested here), I decided to take a break from FleetCOMM development for the duration of the summer, and also while I was working at the lab. Losing a shitload of my own data, right on the release, is *that depressing*.

"Guys, I was totally going to release the finished product but my hard drive died right at the last minute and almost everything is lost! Oh man, I'm really sorry, I was totally done."

Yup, either he's full of poo poo or a moron. Given his previous excuses for lack of progress/updates over the 4 years of the project I'm going with full of poo poo, but that doesn't mean he isn't a moron as well.

e: Yeah, I backed it for $20 or something. Getting more entertainment out of his BS over the years than I probably ever would have from the game.

Yeah, I've seen people playing the demo, and you can tell they are working on the game, and there is real progress with many core features already present, so right now there is no reason to think that the game will never be released or will be released with a significantly reduced scope. I give this delay 2 Star Citizens out of 10.

I mean, the business plan of a MMORPG where it's mostly pay-to-play because things cost money is not a bad one, and people like space games/voxel games/sandboxes/etc. but the guy running it has never made a game before and running a bunch of the names of the game leads through mobygames doesn't turn up a heck of a lot of credits, certainly nothing in MMOs which is a pretty niche field.

I hate to say this but this seems like something that could do better on fig by talking about investment potential (the investors would almost certainly lose money but you'd have a few success stories to plug.)

Videos of Dual Universe have been posted before in the Star Citizen thread and, so far, they seem to be far along in the process than SC. Nothing they've shown seem undoable, since I've seen the same gameplay in stuff like Space Engineers. Using premade elements in place of voxels is nothing new either, I believe there's Minecraft mods where you could replace objects with other meshes.

However, some people in the SC thread had commented that the server video might be where things get kind of fuzzy and confused, because the developers throw a lot of technobabble that may or may not work.

The big issue is no one would really knows until there's a publicly available beta.

We simply have a written contract with the Creator to market C:Rest.
We have nothing to do with the production or distribution of the product.
The creator (Ryan) invented this product from scratch, and plans on shipping and fulfilling C:Rest to you and the rest of his backers.
To all of my knowledge, there has been no misdeed or breaking of any Kickstarter rules. This product is 100% legit and I have personally seen the product, viewed the prototypes, and can vouch for the Creator in terms of knowing that he created this product and is not acting like a reseller.
The creator has actually run several Kickstarter campaigns in the past and delivered and fulfilled on all of those as well. This isn't his first rodeo, so to speak.
