Can someone explain how the Atlas thing works and if I should be doing anything different when mapping? The wiki page doesn't explain it very well. Also someone in chat the other day said to corrupt "red" maps before running them the first time. What does this mean, what is a red map?

Color of a map is based on tier. Corruption is the effect of a vaal orb on an item, which for maps in particular can make them 8 mod maps (as opposed to the usual 6 mod max). You don't have to corrupt a red map before doing them the first time, but if your build can handle hard maps it's definitely a good idea. Yellow are mid tier maps and you need to run them as Rare (so yellow name rarity).

You run maps in these ways to unlock them for your atlas. The part that matters for the atlas is that you kill the boss while meeting the criteria.

Thanks guys. What does unlocking a map in the Atlas do? And getting the bonus? I can't seem to actually interact with anything through the Atlas screen.

then you should be able to switch to Melee Totem Hierophant with ease (also use EQ as your attack skill)

Ancestral Warchief and EQ still do obscene amounts of damage, as long as you have a high dps weapon (there is a Kaom's Primacy in the gstash that would work)

I may be in a minority but I kinda like at least some of the relatively clunky stuff in POE. Games that pursue efficiency and convenience and slick, low-friction systems at all costs lose something important, though it's hard to put your finger on exactly what it is.

unprivate your account please, so we can actually see your char and gear

my first char was going to be either ice trapper or arc miner, now im sorta wishing i went arc miner instead. works really well with new boss rooms and essence mechanics: prep all your mines beforehand, and have 9 crit arcs all rail the rare/unique mob all at once

I put the character tab to be public now too, didn't even know the webpage had settings like that.

I use arc for everything since I can't figure out a good single target skill. For bosses I save some Vaal lightning traps which apply shock. Enfeeble aura so I bosses don't instagib my rear end. If I get gear 2 auras would be nice.

Vaal discipline is my "health potion" and vaal clarity has decent uptime if you kill packs fast. I have no idea what golem is good so I use stone.

The skilltree is improvised from other dudes' skilltrees. I don't know the correct balance between mana-es-dps but I suppose you can pick whatever feels good. Currently I wish I had more mana, and more es so mistakes would not end in deaths so often!

I really want to make a more durable build next, no idea what would be good though.

Hell yeah it does. No unique requirements just a couple of good wands/sceptres. 2 lifesprigs and a tabula will carry you to maps.

You swapping concentrated effect for extra bossmelting?

Start leveling one at the same time

I think first I used it was for act bosses in merc. Each stage of dominus for example took less than 10 seconds with blue wands.

A few points. The reduced mana gem doesn't do anything. You generally don't build your Vaal Lightning Trap to deal damage, just give coverage to boost your damage by covering the area in shocking ground. So that means adding projectiles and bumping up the duration. Heck, I might even drop that if you can reliably shock bosses with just your regular crit arc. Don't need a 5L chest, aim for ES, not links.

And having played with Decoy totems this league, get one, they're strong and underrated.

Seconding this. They're tough enough to take a few hits from Merciless and low-tier map bosses even at mid-levels and without support gems, and you can cast them quick enough that bosses will rarely not be attacking them.

Lightning Strike is a fun build. I really need a better weapon, but finally hitting 65 and swapping in Bino's was already a huge boost.

It's fun to just slam out gigantic screen-clearing waves of lightning. It's like a real lightning bolt build, since Arc doesn't have the visual oomph.

As the other dude said, get more defenses.

The game has a weird power curve where it's like Normal is insanely easy so new players tend to just take "aggressive" Passive Talents and they you get to Cruel with like 600-800 HP because everything died before they could hurt you. Then your resistances take a hit and everything starts hurting really hard.

It's a difficult line to try and find on our own as a new player. I've been playing on and off since beta, before the Shadow class was even a thing (maybe before Duelist / Templar too, I can't remember) and I still find myself usually following guides online just because I tend to get to Merciless and then find out my character is poo poo.

This is probably my second most successful character as I hit level 58 this morning but it sounds like I'm still way far off from where i should be. 1.4K HP, 49% Evasion, 40% Dodge, 30% Spell Dodge.

I murder fast enough, but still get dropped quickly.

600+ es chests cost a lot no matter what. The 5L goes to waste but I don't really know what else to do with it, than boost the vaal trap!

I have reduced mana support gem with auras, do you mean it doesn't reduce the aura mana reservation cost anymore? My enhance is 100/220M which should replace it in a few days. Dunno what else to put in there.

Golems seem to work fine, what makes a decoy totem better?

FWIW I generally aim to have ~1000 hp by the end of Normal, ~2000 by the end of Cruel and ~3,500 or so by the time I start mapping at the end of Merciless. You can adjust those up or down depending on the state of your other defences, whether you use a shield or dual wield and so on but they're decent to aim for. Also from Cruel onwards make sure your resists are always maxed, with the exception of Chaos (which is hard to raise). Capped resists are the single biggest boost you get to survivability.

One other general rule is that specialisation is everything. Pick a couple of skills and make them as good as you possibly can. Pick one of the three basic defensive mechanics (evasion, amour, energy shield) and focus on it. Generalists aren't viable in POE.

Cast when damage taken (abbreviated cwdt) is pretty typically combined with immortal call and increased duration. Makes you take no physical damage for a second or so. Pretty useful.

Cast on Critical Hit is used but has to be built around and just got nerfed. It was the one that was most popular for offensive use. Cast when Damage Taken is useful for keeping defensive buffs running and Curse on Hit is useful if you don't have Blasphemy for some reason.

Particularly for many ranged builds, where you weave in a CoH setup in between your actual attacks, since you want to stay at enough range that Blasphemy isn't worth running.
