N. Senada posted:Sincere question, what is a solutions engineer? Probably closer to a solution architect, every company calls these things differently though. Pre-sales, does demos and builds proof of concepts. That's where the architecting/engineering comes in: showing a potential customer the benefit of the solution/product. It's a technical position that helps close a sale, so probably not commission driven (at least from my experience).

N. Senada posted:Sincere question, what is a solutions engineer? I had this title once. It was a small team that designed workflow and homebrew solutions to solve internal IT requests and inefficiencies as needed. We worked under the Service Delivery director and mostly did automation projects for Access Mgmt so a lot of the work was process improvement related to AD and authentication. This was for a giant organization and we weren't externally facing, our customers were other folks in IT.

N. Senada posted:Sincere question, what is a solutions engineer? Where I worked until recently, (API company) they were the people who came in after the sale was made, or when it was in the late stages, and helped explain how the implementation actually would work in practice, then worked with the customers developers to certify that they had implemented us right once the contract was signed. It was technical in the sense that they needed to understand our API very well to answer questions and they needed the IT and CS knowledge to help with the implementation, but not really engineering because they were mostly configuring things and running tests rather than building anything new from scratch. From what I saw, it required a skillset that was like 60 percent sales, 40 percent engineering. Non-commission, but they did get bonuses if they could hit a certain number of go-lives in a quarter, because we were trying to shorten our implementation cycles.

Job Opening Computer Technicians Located just NW of Atlanta, GA in the Marietta/Kennesaw/Woodstock area. I'm not the one hiring but my work has been in desperate need of computer techs willing to work for $12/hr starting, good opportunity for anyone good with computers to get the heck out of retail/get a first job in the industry. We don't have to deal with any customers. We mostly repair and recycle equipment for a couple of major retail chains and our department is mostly self-run. It's a standard M-F 8A-4:30P deal. We're looking at needing about 4-6 full time techs at this time. The company has not been having luck finding people, and we expect a major jump in workload soon which is more than we can currently handle. Requirements: Must be able to diagnose/repair computer hardware, laptops a plus. Ability to use diagnostic software, mostly on USB Must be able to identify and change common computer components from 2-15 years old on a regular basis. Anything from ram to motherboard swaps. The written test is mostly being able to tell what things are. Knowing current hardware is likely good enough but being familiar with old hardware like SDRAM will make it easier. Must be willing to work in a warehouse with no AC/minimal heat, but we do get to do plenty of sitting though and personal fans. No dress code but please shower at least if you get the job. Have to be able to handle shuffling around desktop computers (Sometimes most of the day) Ability to figure out hardware you're not directly familiar with, the practical test involves this. No criminal record relating to theft since the stuff is expensive. Good organization (Practical test includes this) Own your own car or be close enough for a bike (Our forklift driver does this) Recommended: College education and certs are a big plus with the owners, especially computer related degrees. Generally looking educated helps. Some way to show you can problem solve and not just textbook fix things is good for the interview, use your imagination. Generally just caring about your work quality is helpful for keeping this position. Lost a couple people for this. Mistakes are fine as long as they are fixed before they go out. I suggest not trying to negotiate salary too much, even though we need people the owners hate negotiating. We do get raises every 6 months though so it's a bit of a wash if you stick around and they are bigger raises than retail tends to give. We use temp agencies, but most of us are what they're calling "permanent temps" so it doesn't mean a lot. You can apply at http://www.q-staffing.com/ or send your resume to aschnall@q-staffing.com There are 2 other agencies but this is the one I'm in.
