Night10194 posted:How did you suffer so many losses while out-AVing them almost 3-1 even in the adjusted result at Hankow? Terrain Bonus. The City I control still gives them defensive bonuses. Hence the bloodshed. Its the most annoying part of the ground based war to be honest, Take this example I keep meaning to post about. The 32nd Divison, having been pushed back time and time again through the mountains from Siam, is now holding back a force ten times its size on a plains hex. The mind boggles.

Grey Hunter posted:Hankow restarts tomorrow, so a I spend a load of Political points matching the divisions there to the army HQ. Lets see if that helps! I even remember to change to 11th Army commander from a 43 skill guy to a 73 skill guy! Greeeyyy noooooo. All the PP's you spent doing this you could have used to buy out entirely new divisions or units from the Japanese mainland or other restricted commands. Hankow is also Heavy Urban if I remember correctly so a 4x defensive bonus. It's almost impossible to evict any decent number of troops from heavy urban terrain, you have to surround them and siege them down which is pretty accurate to how things played out IRL. Frontal assaults on well defended, dense cities were a slaughterhouse for good reasons. Saros fucked around with this message at 16:48 on Sep 19, 2016 |

Its afternoon before I have anything to report. Hey, our fighters are starting to get themselves into the air. We take hideous losses in Hankow. I would like to point out that this is a city we control, on a plain. Yet they still get a monstrous terrain bonus. These men have been marching for months. We lost a lot of men today, and need to take a rest now. Shipping is starting to arrive though, so we should see some action soon. We confirm an old kill.

Just because you technically have a flag on the map oesn't mean there isn't urban fighting going on. See: Stalingrad.

Does this game allow you to construct new railroads and such, or is the transport network static? Is rolling stock tracked somewhere?

Someone briefly had an AAR where they were editing the map every turn to make one hex of rail apiece, which sounds nuts. I don't recall it lasting long.

Yeah you never get a railroad into Burma from Thailand which is a bit of an oversight considering how absurdly detailed this game usually is.

Bombers continue to harass our ground units. But most days there are no reported casualties. The Chinese throw away more troops. An just to show you, as it's a quiet day, here is a report from Chunking. ZZZZZ.

The only historical warship losses on this date occurred in the European Theater, far to the north of Norway. The Royal Navy lost a minesweeper (Leda) and destroyer (Somali) to U-boat torpedoes west of Bear Island.

I stop this guy from distracting any of my planes. Nates continue to suck. I may or may not be readying for an assault here. Hopefully this will get me the info needed. I'm not sure if the Allies have any troops here. Logistics are happening behind the scenes – we are slowly getting our planes into place and building up the runways needed for them, and troops are arriving in key jump of places. This is better than nothing!

Recon says there are less than 300 men here. We should be able to take it easily. That was a very dull day! We get a AP confirmed killed. Today's big news is that we retook Akyab without a fight! It seems the British have pulled their forces north – I shall now reinforce, dig in and hold the line here. Grey Hunter fucked around with this message at 07:13 on Sep 23, 2016 |

It relies on supply shipped to Rangoon however. In game as long as there is a viable road route owned by the allies from Rangoon-China 500 free supply is deposited in a Chinese city (chungking?) per turn.

Clunk! We've nearly completed the encirclement of Hankow, after that, its the long siege process. One of my raiding forces strays a little to far south. This at least shows me they have good fighter cover, but poor naval bombers. These Banshees are the biggest threat we see. A sweep by the Kiddo Butai finds these ships. Not a bad little day there. Another kill in the right direction.

You need naval bombard an Australian city or town - the post war books written on the subject will provide the Australian Publishing Industry the jobs for the next 100 years. It will also distract the Military History SA thread on whether the Empire was going to invade down to Brisbane or not debate instead of talking about Tank Destroyers.

I drop the bomber hight to 5,000 feet and begin to pound Hankow. The artillery opens up and continues the fight. The Chokai continues to draw in enemy fire. At least one of those destroyers from yesterday is still alive – but its a long way to a safe port for them. We save the crew the anguish of uncertainty. The CAP here gets its first kill. I adjust things to start the air war up here again. I expect to take a few operational losses from hits like this. We're getting the hits in though. Another good day – any day we're not losing merchant shipping is a good day though! A lot of planes went down damaged after the fighting it seems.
