Ah, one of my favorite things. The Arabic, I'm led to understand, says "China Tower". Mmm, yep. This one is a little more subtle unless you're passingly familiar with firearms; that's meant to be a tangent sight that you'd slide up and down to adjust for different ranges (really only useful on a rifle anyway), but, well, it should have sensible markings like "100", "200", and so-forth. Like any other knock-offs, knock-off guns run the gamut from "hilariously bad" to "would fool even the guy who made the original". Who wouldn't want to sport more splendidly? One of my personal favorites. Note that this was found in Communist China, so "Johnnie Worker" is especially appropriate.

Daiso was a godsend when I was going to university. It's probably the only place in the United States where you can get reasonably-priced origami paper. For content: I wonder if this would fit in this topic? I saw the picture yesterday and it certainly looks like some kind of bootleg, or some kind of unofficially-distributed mod.

In the early days of Wolfenstein being the hot new thing, there were SO many knockoffs that just repainted all the bitmaps for the game. Then there was Super Noah's Ark 3D, a religious slanted version that officially licensed the property to paint over as using a slingshot to shoot food at angry ark animals to get them to "go to sleep".

Hell yeah, we're getting into bootleg/knock off guns now. The story behind the Chinese ones are actually really cool. It can be summed up as a bunch of warlords bought a bunch of guns from Europe, gave them to workers , and said "Make me more of these." even though the workers did not quite understand the pieces' function or how the guns worked. Best description would be items made by a skilled machinist (generally), but did not know anything about guns. Here's a good example of what they generally are, and the same guy has a 23 minute video on a bunch more if you're interested. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtFPgu82f1c Now, here's more bootlegs. It even came out on Super NES. On a cartridge that you had to plug an official cartridge into the top of to make it boot, because there's no way in hell Nintendo would license it.

Tiggum posted:I don't think it's really a bootleg, it's just a mod for the shareware version of the game. Nah, back in the day companies would go through different BBS and find mods like that or just games/shareware people would make and they would make a bunch of floppies and then distribute them to mom and pop stores or guys who did the flea market/computer show circuit. I remember even in the late 90's there were places on the Jersey and New Hampshire boardwalks where you could paw through giant boxes of one dollar floppies and find copies of things like "Spear of Density" and "Mario for Windows". Big shareware compilation CDs tried to keep the trend going but the death of widespread BBS usage pretty much killed their distribution chain. They continued to be a thing in Russia and the poorer parts of Europe but had generally switched over to just being compilations of actual pirated games by the early 00's.

I had a Mario game for Windows! I remember reading about it years later in a gaming article, and what I'd been playing was an early fan game that someone had stuck on a floppy rather then a mod. It had no sound, but it was pretty good; I have no idea where my dad got it from.

You can't go in to knock-off video games without bringing up Famiclones, and the situation in post-Soviet Russia was especially strange. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kne6AKyYUuM The Dendy Chronicles do a pretty good job of explaining it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJQr3tnjHlg "The Grey Elephant's Curse" goes a little more in-depth.

He isn't much to look at, and early on he tries too hard to emulate AVGN, but he's absolutely fascinating to listen to, as he is able to understand that those of us in the West had a very different video game experience than those growing up in the Soviet Block. If video game history is something you're interested in, these are can't miss.
