Young Freud posted:At the same time, most of the people "stealing valor' aren't actually silent about it. It is almost always for attention. You usually can tell someone whose wearing a jacket from a surplus store and someone whose attempting to impersonate veteran. And if it's an actual veteran, it usually ends up in a challenge and someone having to buy another person a drink when the other can't bring up their challenge coin. I mean, that's how it was done before all this stolen valor stuff and was relatively cordial way of dealing with flakes. The other side of that is that people who have actually genuinely seen combat (at least from the ones I've known) just plain don't want to think about it or talk about it. PTSD is common and even those that don't get full-blown PTSD frequently won't talk about it on length; just some "war was awful and I don't want to talk about it." Even those that do tend to not be all "WAR IS AWESOME!!! KILLED ME 90 MEN!!!! OOORRAAAH!!!!" and more "we did what needed to be done. It sucked the whole time." A ton of soldiers also come home with stories like "yeah I got a drop on this enemy guy, shot him in the neck, and killed him very dead. He dropped and bled everywhere; didn't even scream. I hollered pretty loud, so happy that I killed somebody bad. I searched his dead body for a trophy and found a picture of him with his wife and his children. I never felt worse in my life and never will." It's like the old saying goes; "war is only glorified by people who have never experienced it." People that go to war, kill a bunch of enemies, and just feel so awesome that they got to kill somebody are probably psychotic.

If you're a true patriot you immediately suck them off the second you learn that they served. They may fight you, but you have to persevere. It is your duty as a citizen to bring them to climax, forcibly if need be. It's not just about honoring the flag. You have to honor the pole too.

In today's hosed up Sovcit news (well, three days ago), a guy who's been charged with killing his infant child tries to pull all the classic stops! Dismissing his lawyer, screaming about being a "sovereign citizen," deploying the "didn't consent" line, etc., which seems to (obviously) only have resulted in him digging a bigger hole: http://triblive.com/news/adminpage/11180388-74/levys-jury-charges Would one of the legal-minded folks here care to comment on how jury selection works in the event that a defendant chooses to represent themselves? Are they typically allowed to participate in the process, assuming they don't disqualify themselves via Sovcit nonsense?

Pro pers are expectes to handle the case exactly like an attorney. Thet are essentially an attorney. The only exception is if they testify, where they generally can testify in narrative rather than ask questions of themselves. In practice, the court tends to give pro pers a bit more leway, but they don't have to and arguably shouldn't.

This country will be drenched in blood, and God only knows how it will end. It is all folly, madness, a crime against civilization! You people speak so lightly of war; you don't know what you're talking about. War is a terrible thing! You mistake, too, the people of the North. They are a peaceable people but an earnest people, and they will fight, too. They are not going to let this country be destroyed without a mighty effort to save it … Besides, where are your men and appliances of war to contend against them? The North can make a steam engine, locomotive, or railway car; hardly a yard of cloth or pair of shoes can you make. You are rushing into war with one of the most powerful, ingeniously mechanical, and determined people on Earth — right at your doors. You are bound to fail. Only in your spirit and determination are you prepared for war. In all else you are totally unprepared, with a bad cause to start with. At first you will make headway, but as your limited resources begin to fail, shut out from the markets of Europe as you will be, your cause will begin to wane. If your people will but stop and think, they must see in the end that you will surely fail. Christmas Eve, 1860
