China's new Radio Frequency Telescope is going to begin operation. This is the Chinese SUPERCOMPUTER that will power it. Zoom in and look how loving chabuduo those floors are in there. Now just imagine how much more chabudou is going on inside and outside that facility, physically/structurally and administratively.

in fact the purple LED poo poo makes sense when you remember that chinese supercomputers are overwhelmingly stunt machines intended to generate headlines and be on a list the lights are there to make cool photo-ops for state run media

Here's China's radiotelescope Here's Arecibo You will notice the rather large disparity in technology at the dish focus, which is where the magic happens. Anybody can slap together a square km of sheet metal and pick up some decommissioned high tension lines. Arecibo has liquid helium cooling their focus antennas to a degree or two Kelvin. I do not believe the Chinese are neck and neck here

really tho the main problem is that a lot of people on bikes dont' think that the stoplights apply to them. my best friend in tianjin is a tianjin born canadian dude, he has lived in montreal for 11 years off and on, and he has an ebike and when we are going to places he NEVER follows the lights, he told me specifically no one thinks they are for bikes. on my way to work every day the cars do a decent job of stopping at lights, but they usually fill up intersections first and then clog the intersection and the light changes so they can't run the light, but bikes never stop. ever. they just constantly are going both ways which really fucks up the flow of traffic. most of the people getting slammed in that video are on bikes. eeeesh.

other main problems that i see all the time that may contribute to this: at night time i'd guess one out of every seven cars i see doesn't have their lights on. also cars seem to go SUPER slow when they are turning. like when i am taking a left turn in USA, i wait until i have a break in traffic and accelerate into it, so im going with the flow of traffic. look at the car at 10:05. for some reason it is turning left and slows down, ultimately coming to a complete stop, as it gets blasted by a truck. like if he had just gunned it he may have made it across, if the truck slowed down? or he could have just waited? but somehow choosing to to hit the breaks and come to a complete stop in the direct line of path of the truck was deemed the best choice. idgi

then there are some, like the one at 12:00, where the person had to be watching a drama on their phone or something, because they just straight plowed into a stationary person without slowing down at all, and the person made zero effort to get out of the way

last you have the kind of accident that TRULY boggles the mind, at 14:17, where the intersection is comically large, you immediately see the intersection and think "no possible way that there is an accident here" and you see one small little bike and one car and you think "this is such an inanely large intersection i can't actually believe these two vehicles will collide" and then you watch and despite their best effort to avoid each other, the vehicles ultimately end up crashing

Driving culture gets weird. When I was in Naples, Italy, it was the worst driving I've ever seen. It was like if you so much as made eye-contact with another driver, it was a sign of weakness and you were getting cut-off or not let in. Like, my sister was stopped at a stop light once. This got her rear ended. The other driver said he kept thinking she was going to accelerate any second now right up until the crash. It's like bumper cars except every hit costs you money so you try to avoid but, fundamentally, it's still bumper cars logic. It's just weaving in and out and around all the time, nothing else. At 14:17, both drivers were probably thinking, "I don't stop. They stop," right up until the end.

Yep, it's critical. FAST (the Chinese one):quote:A 65-person village was relocated from the valley to make room for the telescope[8] and an additional 9,110 people living within a 5 km radius of the telescope were relocated to create a radio-quiet area. Not sure on Arecibo's blanket quiet zone, but it looks from the ham radio regulations that there's a 16 km radius around it where you have to get special permission to put up any transmitters on certain bands. These structures are all environment-centric, meaning that they find the bowl first, worry about the people later. Hard to find areas that will support such huge structures with inconvenient geometry.

It's hard to picture. I haven't been to either so can't compare. Like I literally cannot remember the last time I was outside and did not see at least one person driving on the wrong side of the road into oncoming traffic.

I've spent my lunch break reading StephenChin posts and now I love him. He's like a Chinese Karl Pilkington. He appears to be an either gay or closeted 86 year old Chinese man who lived through WWII and the great leap forward in China, then travelled about the world and now lives in Canada and spends his time cycling, throwing buckets of ice cold water over his head, and making comments on the Guardian website. He goes from making genuinely touching comments about how Japan didn't deserve being nuked despite personally experiencing the horrors they inflicted on China to stuff like this: I can't get enough I want him to write an autobiography.
