I ended up restarting and you are correct, but I was not able to examine the fire at that spot because I had picked up the bonfire there and even after I put a new one down I was not able to examine it for a hint. Don't you love a game where you can pick up a large fire and put it in your pocket? I finished the demo, but I wish that it was a big longer. I guess that's the sign of enjoyment.

I've been using Lightning (level 8 sailor skill) and I'm wondering-- does it ever taper off? It's a free, hit all attack that's stronger than my iron ax, and it doesn't diminish in damage like a boomerang does. It just seems really really good right now.

If the enemy resists it, it's only doing 30 damage. Eventually they start getting way more HP too. It's useful for a good while, but you'll have to invest in new options as you progress.

Offensive spells and abilities will either do fixed damage (give or take enemy resistances) or damage scaled to your basic weapon damage.

So yeah, go through tablet dungeons to get your hearts. The original game was some next-level hell when it came to tablets and people scouring the world for fragments helped contribute to the 100+ hour timeframes people took to beat it.

Gotcha. I've put way, way, way more time into Dragon Quest 8 than into the rest of the series combined (or hell, any other RPG) and the skill systems are pretty fundamentally different. Powerful, but only temporarily so, skills isn't something I'm used to!

Nephzinho posted:How much actual game is there? I don't need another sandbox game, but if this is going to be an avenue to play through/make essentially DQ7 island sized bites of content it might be a good time killer. As far as the demo goes, you only get to do stuff on the starting island. The demo leads you through all of the basic building, crafting, and combat stuff, but it leaves a few exploration secrets you can find on your own. It's definitely a multiple island deal, but I don't know about what needs building on those islands. I got the impression all the city building happens only on the starting island. Some more gripes: The UI could be better. When making items, you either make one at a time or all of them (including the raw mats in all chests). There's no durability bar for your armor outside the menu, just your weapon, so if you get hit a lot, expect to lose your armor without any warning. I also haven't found a repair function, but at least you can carry up to five weapons equipped at a time.

I wanna say Vacuum (Thin Air) in the original scaled with your level but I have no idea where I heard that. It was an extremely overpowered skill either way though, even if a rough boss was immune to it

I'm looking at the DS remakes now and I love the art style! It reminds me a bit of Golden Sun (which I know gets a bad rep around SA) with it's watercolor-y and vibrant colors. I've played a little bit of several games now and liked all of them so I think I might actually just go through the games chronologically (unless there's a better order to play them in!) I can't believe how this series has gone so completely under the radar for me before now. Oh hey, you got the avatar!

The best part about the DS remakes is that they have possibly the fastest battles in any RPG, ever. e: And yeah just play them in release order. If anything, you gotta play the DS versions of IV, V, and VI, as well as the 3DS version of VII, but in general DQ remakes are really substantial and good. It was an extremely overpowered skill either way though, even if a rough boss was immune to it I know it scales in 6, and its damage formula in 8 has the scaling part too, so yeah probably. It made more sense in 6 since Woosh is the most commonly resisted element and fights post-Alltrades were both sides making GBS threads out free overpowered skills, and 8 requires knowing that Fisticuffs is probably worth investing into on one guy just for Thin Air since even Yangus can shrug off 2 MP.

but anyway, once you get past the hump your initial vocations don't matter much at all. they are quick to master, so you won't stay in any basic human class for very long.

Dancer's also good early for 0MP full party healing and buffs/debuffs. They fall off pretty hard later so grab em while they're still useful. Sailor and Thief also have some really good abilities that shine in the midgame, and the capstone nuke for Mage will be your best source of damage for a long, long time (also it costs 4 MP which is spammable by anyone.)

Give wolf boy some heals and then march him down the physical classes, I say. He's by far the fastest on your team. e: why was everyone surprised by this? Nearly every person on that entire island was saying 'Wow isn't it weird that nobody who goes to the Abbey to change jobs is ever seen again?'
