Couldn't purposefully invalidating an election be useful in some way to a bad actor?

It's perfectly doable. I don't think it could be done without those involved getting caught, though. You'd need a large conspiracy and in a large conspiracy someone would gently caress up and squeal.

And then you'd have to hold elections again. Because no paper trail :hf:

And really, far easier to compromise the manufacturer itself where there is zero independent oversight; not even octogenarian volunteers. Because our voting apparatus is not considered critical infrastructure to DHS. :hf: :hf:

Mel Mudkiper posted:

All of a sudden you would have districts that have voted consistently blue for a generation all across the country suddenly simultaneously have wildly unexpected results with the one common denominator being they all used the same vulnerable voting machine

It's not really a problem for national elections and probably not even state-wide elections. It's a huge problem for state and local elections and there's very little way to tell if it's happening at all, or even what actually happened if someone was caught, because again, no paper trail on many machines.

edit: still a national election concern if the machines were centrally compromised, but it would show up as a discrepancy between exit polling and tallied votes. >3% difference and the UN starts calling shenanigans. Still a concern though because I have no idea how the hell the US would react in that event.

A couple of jailed 19-year-olds wouldn't be enough man power to swing the election

EDIT:

Furthermore, if the link was posted on election day, it wouldn't spread fast enough to be an effective method of shifting the vote

if the link was posted before election day, the government would know and have security protocols in place

The problem is, Donald Trump does what Donald Trump wants. That man shouldn't have had a smart phone since he won the Republican primaries. Flip phone with no internet connection? Fine. But he will do what he wants and everyone else can go to hell. This is DJT, and it's how he does business. I'm sure that man has his iPhone 7 or S7 and he's doing whatever the hell he wants, because who the hell will tell him otherwise? This is why he is where he is. He is used to being coddled and told yes by everyone around him for the past 52 years of his life (or more). He's an egotistical, self-centered, mollycoddled, daddy's boy and always has been. There's nothing in the constitution and I assume nothing in the statutes about redoing a presidential election. It's either settled by whatever electors get certified/accepted or Congress votes if there's no EC winner. Realistically if things get hosed up the courts need to make some decisions fast about recounts/invalidating ballots etc and it's a cluster. (See Bush v. Gore.)

Reminder that Trump has a clause in his volunteering contract which means you can never talk bad about Trump, his family, his businesses, or anything nearly related to him for the rest of time.
That contract would never hold up in court, but it's probably enough of a deterrent where we won't see a tell-all until Trump leaves this mortal coil (or time ends. Whichever comes first)

I will acknowledge a single machine is vulnerable, sure, and that those vulnerabilities should be fixed. But the level of coordination necessary to mass hack machines and districts to a level necessary to swing an election is implausible to the point of absurdity

You're also forgetting that these machines sit most of the year in some forelorn county warehouse somewhere, all together. Likewise, only a few critical counties could swing states and the electoral college.

I'm not saying it's going to happen or be easy, but if anyone could it would be the russians
