Another random bandcamp discovery, Codex:Factoria which describe themselves as: "Formed out of a mutual love for classic Canadian and European death/thrash" Which is exactly what it sounds like, only with samples and stuff in front sometimes, got some good grind to it. Normally not a "thrash" guy but there's enough death here I think that it keeps me interested. https://codexfactoria.bandcamp.com/releases First song is a slow start ( kicks in around 1:20 ), but my favourite is probably Might Makes Right which sounds really familiar ( especially the shouty chorus ) but I can't put my finger on it. Good cover of Black Metal too.

Erik Ravn just posted on the band's Facebook account that he's started demo recordings of a new Wuthering Heights song! Hopefully he'll manage a full album, too. Gonna be tough to top off Salt, though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eblFOXlHDs

My best friend invited me to come with him to Progpower USA next year. Problem is, I know no songs/albums from any of the announced bands, save for Metal Church and Angel Dust. Any recs from any of these bands would be fantastic. I already know I need to listen to Haken's Visions because my friend will not stop talking about how great it is.

Haken's Affinity from this year is really good. Orphaned Land is good, I like The Neverending Way of ORwarriOR. Katatonia's The Fall of Hearts, also from this year, was good. They used to be death metal and now are very much not death metal.

Their debut is full of fun singalong choruses, so I'd probably listen to that and see if it's your style. They are probably touring in support of their new album though, which to me was a bit of a letdown.

Anyone have a recommendation for Prog DM? Looking for something similar to Opeth and Anciients. I tried Edge of Sanity's Crimson album and it didn't do anything for me. Katatonia's The Fall of Hearts seemed decent.

They definitely have their more heavier songs but this one gives you a good idea of their type of music. A lot of atmospheric and ethereal feel to their sound.

Ningen-Isu are a bunch of old dudes who have been doing psychadelic/prog rock and metal for decades now. The bassist has been doing Galder for longer than Galder has been doing Galder, too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JY89ZxVqEg Chthonic are a cool band from Taiwan that incorporate the erhu, which is a cool sounding Chinese instrument. Boris is from Japan, of course. Sigh is the only other really notable (big) Japanese band I can think of. Maybe Gallhammer if that's your thing? 22 Eargesplitten posted:Does anyone have recommendations for non American / European bands? Pretty much any type of metal. I realized yesterday that the closest thing I have ever listened to were a couple Russian bands, and that doesn't count. So this is a great subject for me since it's one of my biggest areas of interest musically. I'll try to chip in with some stuff that most metalheads ignore. My Japanese music list on RYM has a big metal section. Mostly focusing on power and prog, but there's a number of worthwhile extreme metal acts I mention. I'm not much into the older bands like Sabbat, Transgressor, etc... but I do mention them in my Japanese music thread here on NMD. Outside of Japan... China and India have very small scenes, sadly. At least relative to the countries' size. I'll still list some notable ones: India: - Blood & Iron. Cool heavy/power metal very strongly influenced by Maiden's proggy era. - Gaijin. Tech death band reminiscent of Martyr and Anata. - Fragarak. Prog/melodic death, "melodic" in the same way as The Chasm rather than the usual Gothenburg way. - Gruesome Malady. Goregrind with super weird guitar tones. - Amogh Symphony. Very eclectic mostly instrumental prog metal, though their most recent album Vectorscan is more prog rocky. - Dhishti are from Sri Lanka but eh. Close enough. Depressive BM meets South Indian folk interludes. Well-done blend. China (and HK, Taiwan, etc.): - Tang Dynasty. China's version of X Japan basically - the first well-known metal band in the country. And yes, Japan had Vow Wow, Murasaki, Loudness, etc. but X Japan made the metal scene much more prominent. Their 2013 album is hard to find online but it's really weird. - Varuna. Weird spacy black metal. - 英吉沙 (aka Yn Gisarm/Yengisar). Another mix of Chinese folk and BM, but not as tacky as, like, Chthonic. - Troma Tumor. Wonky, sloppy but technical brutal death metal. - 吟遊家 (aka Minstrel). Japanese-style power metal from Taiwan. - Be Persecuted. Black metal band who I mainly remember because their drummer's stage name is "Autism". They're good if you like depressive stuff though. Also check out some non-metal but related artists like Enemite and Darkness over Depth. The biggest Asian metal scene is actually that of Indonesia. There's a staggering amount of black metal and death metal there, but most of it is absolutely amateurish and sloppy, and not in the cool Sarcofago way. But there's still some good bands. - Kekal are my favorite Indonesian band by some margin. They play weird black-ish prog metal that sounds like it was produced by Devin Townsend, but riff-wise is closer to Voivod or Atheist. They have a very cool futuristic vibe on their more recent work too. - Indonesia's most productive scene is their brutal death scene, which is quite honestly ridiculous. Basically all the bands in that scene sound the same so I won't give them separate bullet points, but worthwhile ones include Humilation, Siksakubur, Plasmoptysis, Asphyxiate, Orestes and Funeral Inception. - Cranial Incisored, on the other hand, do deserve their own bullet point despite being nominally brutal DM. They are loving weird and sound like Naked City + Behold the Arctopus more than they do Suffocation. Of course, there's also Central/South America and Australia to cover, but I think those aren't what you had in mind when you brought up non-American/European bands.

Can someone help me remember the name of a band/album. The album I'm thinking of is black metalish and had a green woman/nymph kneeling looking at something in her hands/on the ground on the cover. I thought Atilla Csihar had some relation to the band, but looking at metal archives I can't find anything. This is an older album, like mid-late 90s, maybe early 2000s as I remember seeing it right when I was getting into more extreme metal. Any help would be much appreciated.
