Why not play another game and try to take out an entire political party? I wouldn't be surprised if this whole thing started with Bill thinking that Trump could never pull off such a plan, and Trump privately challenged him to a bet or something.

But that's just my speculation.
My speculation here is more Bill Clinton put Trump up to it and is going to be riding the Hillary victory train like Baron Samedi.

- It's no secret that Trump used to be friends with the Clintons, and even donated a lot of money to their foundation. It's strange that he would switch sides to the Republican party. It's not so crazy to think that he did it as an elaborate plan to destroy the GOP from within and help his friend Hillary earn the Presidency, something she's worked so hard for. He only started getting significantly involved in politics in 2011, when he began pushing the birther crap. This was just after the 2010 election, when the racist Tea Party movement happened and Republicans won bigly. Trump correctly read what the Republican base was becoming, and the birther stuff was an easy in. Then he just waited until where we are now. The electorate is more diverse than ever, and the GOP base is whiter and angrier than ever before. 2016 was the perfect time to make his move.

- In the primaries, he really didn't focus on Hillary as much as he could have. He spent a lot of time DESTROYING the other Republican hopefuls. Right now the GOP's presidential candidate pool is a smoldering crater. None of them are going to win in 2020 or beyond that. The only people you could make an argument for are Pence, Cruz and Kasich. Ted Cruz is extremely ugly and unlikeable, Pence has way too much baggage to win an election, and Kasich will never make it through a primary now that the Republican base is truly a basket of deplorables. Why would Trump want to hurt his party so much? Because he's a Clinton plant, that's why.

- He's relying on the RNC to do his campaign stuff so that he can weaken it. By being forced to take care of all his campaign stuff, it just drags the RNC down and means that they can't support downticket races as well as they could have otherwise.

- That one good month he had when he kept his mouth shut and slowly caught up to Clinton? Just more strategy. He couldn't make it TOO obvious that he was deliberately trying to lose, and he knew that keeping quiet and acting normal would get enough moderate Republicans to jump on and boost his numbers.

- As much as we like to think Trump is an idiot, you have to have an above average level of intelligence to play the game as well as he has in his career. He's a piece of poo poo, no doubt, but he's very good at moving money around, passing the bill onto other people, playing the bankruptcy game and so on. It's clearly something that he enjoys doing. The idea that Trump is a Machiavellian clinton plant is the dumbest conspiracy theory. His rise and current conduct is perfectly consistent to the way he's lived his life and ascribing some intent on his part to how it's being received requires you to overlook that he's been doing this <exact> act for as long as he's been in the public eye.

He's not some deep cover plant, he's a simple person with transparent motivations who has acted in exactly the manner throughout this campaign that a simple person with transparent motivations would.

E: seems I was beaten. But seriously, dumbest conspiracy theory I can think of because it requires you to dismiss 4 decades of public statements all painting a picture of a very specific and terribly consistent person as some kind of deep cover acting. There is literally no one who has known him for any length of time who is surprised at any aspect of his campaign so to think he's in league with the Clinton's would mean that you think he's been keeping up this ruse for his entire adult life.

the spin is harder and harder as he fails more and more

the reason it would work if he didn't poo poo himself in debate 1 is that there wasn't recent history of him melting down in a debate. Now it shifts from, "oh he's crazy but can be rational when it comes down to it" to "so it looks like there's a 50/50 chance of getting a lunatic when he comes out in high stakes situations" which isn't nearly so good

I think you're slightly misreading the angle that poster was going for. It's not an explanation for Hillary's success, it's an explanation for Trump's constant staggering failure and incompetence; being a racist, sexist pig does not exactly immediately preclude him from running a tight ship within his campaign, and yet he's going out of his way to run the least tight ship possible.

Hillary is doing fine on her own terms, and were it Pence or Kasich running, she'd likely still be handing them their rear end. That doesn't make Trump's whole deal look any less like a Springtime for Cheeto Hitler scenario.

Eh, sorry about the peeved off response to the clear sarcasm. It's just, you know that in the nearest future this will be one of the actual theories a lot of people will honest to God believe in.

Speaking of which, rolling stone has a good article about how to counteract anxiety-driven conservatism: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/features/why-were-living-in-the-age-of-fear-w443554 (It starts by explaining the association between anxiety and black-and-white thinking and conservatism, which is probably old news to everyone here, but then it goes into mild suggestions about how to counteract this programming, which is something I haven't really seen before, and also something which will probably have to be explored soon. A lot of posters here seem to be really sad about their parents, so I thought they might be interested.)

There's also Taibbi on political disenfranchisement: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/features/six-million-adults-who-wont-influence-this-election-w443693 . It's OK, but it ends with this really bizarre paragraph:

quote:

Just another reason to hate the political process as we head into this most disgusting of all presidential elections. The alien invasion can't come too soon.

I don't think Trump would want Vince in his administration because Vince would represent a threat due to his abilities with showmanship and the fact that Vince would probably kill him and try to become president. I love that Trump seems to think: "No way could Hillary manage do prepare 3 days for the next debate. I get tired from that poo poo after an hour.".
Hillary might be the biggest nerd in politics. You could probably ask her how to fix the Hispanic job market in Carson City and she would demonstrate a trend in a figure with statistics from several years from the top of her head. Trump would interrupt her to inform her that it's actually pronounced Carson City, Ne-vah-da.

Reminder that the only flaw in Clinton's debate seemed to be "over-preparedness".
Trump really is the guy who does nothing to prepare for a math test and then complains that math is biased.
