I somehow forgot one of my favorite series. It's maybe a little spoilery...but I dunno how else to recommend it so: Haibane Renmei.

Have there been any noteworthy dubs released in the past few years? Panty and Stocking is pretty much the best, the Toradora dub is just really solid, and GitS Arise was good, even if Mary Elizabeth McGlynn wasn't voicing the Major. Are there any others that people have found notable? I know Funimation has been turning out a lot with their simuldubs, but I haven't heard much about those one way or the other.

I don't watch many dubs nowadays, and this is probably going to read like a joke answer, but I checked out Dagashi Kashi dubbed on a friend's recommendation earlier this year and it was pretty fantastic. Hotaru's English voice is stupidly over-the-top in a way that perfectly nails the deranged absurdity that is her personality, and I have a hard time imagining her sounding any other way.

Dunno if it really counts as 'the last couple of years', but as I've said before, I think the Steins;Gate dub is amazing. As for other stuff, though I know it goes without saying that dubs of Ghibli films are generally great, I was especially impressed with their dub of From Up On Poppy Hill and would say it's perhaps my favourite Ghibli dub I've seen.

Space Dandy is probably one of the best dubs in quite awhile, it really helped that they were able to have more cooperation than usual with the show.

Seconding Steins;Gate. Tatum does a great haughty Okabe, and Reinhart's Daru is the canon voice in my head since Seki's dopey take on the character always grated me.

They also did a pretty good reversal on the "SONOFABITCH!" line to the badge dealer since it obviously doesn't work in English.

Those are probably the best that could be done in English, but in those two instances (especially the engrish one) the original japanese just feels so much better.

Still, watching it dubbed is an excuse to watch it again so I'll see.

yeah i like the chicken tenders bit with mayuri but those two bits still feel just slightly off

though that's probably just because a version of that first scene where okabe doesn't say "SONUVABITCH!" does not register in my brain

I preferred the dub to the sub for Steins;Gate. Aside from it just being nice to hear in my own language, a fair few of the more awkward jokes and references were replaced with funnier ones (or at least that was how it seemed to me when I compared some of the scenes), and Okabe's script and general manner of speaking was funnier than ever. The main downsides were the aforementioned lack of 'SONOVABITCH' and the fact that English Okabe can't do his evil laugh quite as well as Japanese Okabe, but you can't have everything.

Pretty much everything prior to Spirited Away is worth watching though except for Pom Poko and Ocean Waves. Maybe My Neighbors the Yamadas too, though I haven't seen that one.
