People fear change. People want things to be the way things were when they were younger. For the current aging population, this includes a whiter America (which is where I imagine the bulk of the hatred comes from).

It's not like they'll ever see the immigrants though, because none of the immigrants want to live in a south Florida shithole where the average age is 20 years older than dirt.

He and others on his team have been hailed as heroes by veterans’ families across the country. Dennis knows that free speech is sometimes the only way to hold the powerful accountable.

Well you see, General Flynn came to him, naked, in a dream, and laid out the Trump campaign's strategy for victory, but it required special poll analysis that only he could provide.

Also, that analysis would work better with a bunch of photos of Hillary, Obama, Larry Sinclair, Rev. Wright and Malcolm X pinned to a cork board and connected by colored string.

Out of curiosity, what makes old people so goddamn racist fearful of everything? I saw an interview CNN was doing of some wrinkled old white pieces of poo poo in Florida, and they were uniformly acting like increasing the amount of legal immigration was somehow going to be deeply harmful to the US. Where did this idea come from? Immigrants tend to be educated and economically successful. I can understand being afraid of their impact on the labour market, even if I don't think it's a good argument for shutting the border, but why would you be scared of that if you're already retired? Tax paying legal immigrants are the only way the government can afford to keep sending you money, you ancient, befuddled halfwits!

Quoting myself from a few pages back, but it fits pretty nicely with your question. I can't speak for the entire country but this is the reality of where I live.

Mahoning posted:

I think a lot of it is perception. Youngstown was a growing, booming city until the early 70's. So that is the bar for them, they want to go back to that. But it's impossible. Tons of homes within the city limits have been torn down because there's just simply not enough people to live in them. These were white neighborhoods 40 and 50 years ago. They're black neighborhoods now (and poor, and in disrepair) and so you see where this racism stems from (Look at what THE BLACKS did to my old neighborhood!)

Outside the city limits, these people are living pretty well in the suburbs. We have one of the lowest cost of livings in the US, and the past 10 years have seen a lot of revitalization. But that doesn't convince them, they want it to be like it was when they were young.

In summary: its not as bad as they think it is, and they're longing for a past that is never coming back. This area wallows in self-loathing. Me and my buddy even started a web series to highlight some of the finer things of the area to try and shake the perception that nothing goes on here. We just wanted people to stop living in the past and start talking about the present and the future. You can imagine my disappointment when huge international newspapers and loving CNN and other outlets came here to do stories about the 6,000 Democrats that voted for Trump.

I can't wait for them all to die off or retire to Florida.
