Nixon was very popular before the coordinated smear campaign brought him down. If you exclude his final year, he was more popular then Obama and around Bill Clinton levels

You need a pretense of bipartisanship to cut social security and sell the next generation of foreign wars. They were supposed to happen under Obama but Obama dragged his heels on the wars and Ted Cruz derailed social security "reform"

LBJ drove the democrat's chances into the shitter in '68, putting up Humphrey to run. Riots and assassinations vs law and order. By '72 it was the 70's and the malaise had set it so no one gave a poo poo.

nixon once had a nervous breakdown in the middle of the night, snuck out of the white house and ran away from the secret service. he made it to the lincoln memorial and hung out with a bunch of hippies who were camped there for whatever reason until the service came to gently escort him home

e: also nixon would go to his house in california, which i forget the name of, every summer. he'd sit in the study with the air conditioning turned on maximum, the lights off and all the blinds and curtains drawn and he'd sit in front of a roaring fire in the middle of august for hours, with strict instructions to be left alone, because he was a lunatic

You need a pretense of bipartisanship to throw endless money at social programs regardless of effectiveness and appease public sector unions, while cutting defense to pretend to fund them and wishing away changing foreign threats based on ideology. These things were supposed to happen under Obama, but Obama dragged his heels and Ted Cruz derailed literally everything Rand Paul hadn't already derailed.

My Dad voted for Reagan in the 1980 election as a joke, thinking it was impossible he would win. I have a reflexive tendency to want to avoid anything like that.

In all honesty my vote is probably not all that meaningful, as my state is 99% likely to go for Clinton anyway, but it just doesn't feel like good timing for a protest vote.
