Here we go

http://wivb.com/2015/05/05/study-says-western-new-york-is-one-of-the-most-racist-in-the-country/

quote:

Could Western New York be one of the most racist places in America? A new study out says “yes”. The information is based on what people search on the internet. This study measures “racist” attitudes through Google search data. The researchers say it’s a way to get accurate information without people censoring themselves.

A study published last month through an international research journal, “PLOS ONE,” used data from Google searches to find out which areas of the country are the most racist.

News 4 asked residents if racism is an issue in Western New York. Patrick Slattery from Buffalo said, “Absolutely. Sometimes you open your eyes in the morning and it seems like its 40 years ago.” Meanwhile Darvin Whitely from Buffalo disagrees to a point, “In certain areas racism is taught, because that’s what their family is used to. Racism is taught. You’re not born racist.”

Western New York was found by the study to have a “higher then average” number of racist searches. The study specifically measured racism as the proportion of Google searches containing the use of the N-word. Researched studied almost 200 particular areas of the country.

I bet if they measured the words "beaner", "spic", or "wetback", instead of "THE N-WORD", that map would be inverted.

http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0122963

quote:

Racial disparities in health are well-documented and represent a significant public health concern in the US. Racism-related factors contribute to poorer health and higher mortality rates among Blacks compared to other racial groups. However, methods to measure racism and monitor its associations with health at the population-level have remained elusive. In this study, we investigated the utility of a previously developed Internet search-based proxy of area racism as a predictor of Black mortality rates. Area racism was the proportion of Google searches containing the “N-word” in 196 designated market areas (DMAs). Negative binomial regression models were specified taking into account individual age, sex, year of death, and Census region and adjusted to the 2000 US standard population to examine the association between area racism and Black mortality rates, which were derived from death certificates and mid-year population counts collated by the National Center for Health Statistics (2004–2009). DMAs characterized by a one standard deviation greater level of area racism were associated with an 8.2% increase in the all-cause Black mortality rate, equivalent to over 30,000 deaths annually. The magnitude of this effect was attenuated to 5.7% after adjustment for DMA-level demographic and Black socioeconomic covariates. A model controlling for the White mortality rate was used to further adjust for unmeasured confounders that influence mortality overall in a geographic area, and to examine Black-White disparities in the mortality rate. Area racism remained significantly associated with the all-cause Black mortality rate (mortality rate ratio = 1.036; 95% confidence interval = 1.015, 1.057; p = 0.001). Models further examining cause-specific Black mortality rates revealed significant associations with heart disease, cancer, and stroke. These findings are congruent with studies documenting the deleterious impact of racism on health among Blacks. Our study contributes to evidence that racism shapes patterns in mortality and generates racial disparities in health.

So it sounds like googling "the etymology of the n-word" or searching the lyrics to a Tupac song are considered just as racist as googling "racist jokes about n-words".

I mean, yes it's stupid (because that's hardly the only way racism is shown/present), but is there some reason those areas are googling that poo poo more than any other part of the country?

song lyrics or trying to catch up on a news item or something are my two guesses

i mean let's say a cop in cleveland got fired for using the N-word. that would explain searching for it in cleveland but not in cody wyoming

It might help that huge portions of the country that are green or yellow on that map have very little in the way of a black population. It's hardly conclusive, but I doubt Idaho or Montana spend much time googling "I hate n-words".

Edit
Or googling lyrics to anything but Blake Shelton.

It occured to me today that national news doesnt have continued coverage of protests like in baltimore or more recently in charlotte - while the protests were active, there was coverage, but when the footage ended, so did the coverage.

But colin not standing up for 1 min every sunday - making news each week. He's found a way to keep policing and racism in the news in the most passive way possible. Thats pretty impressive. 10000s of people protesting on the street : news for a day. One man kneeling : news for a season.

Keep it up, colin. I would have never thought kneeling at an anthem would attract attention to police brutality, buy it has.

The best part is Colin isn't even doing anything. White America is so worked up they can't stop paying attention even though they want people to stop paying attention. It's kind of beautiful.
