He's always so serious and controlled and acts like that's the Klingon way, but the Klingons are mostly arrogant, boastful party animals

By that time in DS9 I think Worf('s writing) had developed a wry sense of humor. I never read that line as serious.

I think part of the reason Geordi is so bad with women, other than being a creepy stalker weirdo, is that if a woman were to actually kiss him she'd get his visor jammed right up into her eyes.

Oh also getting married to Dax, having her die, then having to serve on the station with a very different person who hates klingon poo poo but has all your dead wife's memories is still a huge loving step up from having a relationship with Troi.

Weird moral in that episode. Thought it was building to "prophecy is worthless, it means whatever you want!" But it became "turns out the prophecy was right all along!"

Did they run out of the blue rouge for their headspoon or what? There are several more. The one who wants to bone O'Brien mentioned above (and her scientist buddy), Kira at one point, the judge at I wanna say O'Brien's? sham courtroom trial, and an Obsidian Order agent or two. And best of all, Mila, though she doesn't pop up until much later and is underutilized. Outside of the Obsidian Order though, I don't think we ever see a female member of the actual military. I wanna say it's mentioned somewhere that Cardassian society has a large degree of stratification when it comes to civilian work (where it's sortof implied that women dominate, at least in things like the sciences and judiciary) and military work (where it's all male, all the time). I like it. I've always subscribed to the idea that humans aren't just the boring generic race, we are actually the most terrifying because we just do whatever. I don't know if it's real or not, but there are some quotes claimed to be from some German or Russian (maybe both) generals or tacticians that say the Americans are terrible to fight because they don't even follow their own doctrine so you can't predict them. I think that fits the federation pretty well.

Picked up the new two-volume Trek encyclopedia for a cool 40-something bucks because I CoinStar'd my coin jar the other day for a cool $45 bucks and the book was on sale for $88, down from $150 retail.

Do you guys think Star Trek with its societies that relentlessly expand and consume, whether they're good or bad, is a product of the mid-20th century?

Arglebargle III posted:Do you guys think Star Trek with its societies that relentlessly expand and consume, whether they're good or bad, is a product of the mid-20th century? The Federation does seem to have a mandate towards expansion in a way that the Romulans and the Klingons don't, necessarily, although a lot of this is also that a ton of space even in the Alpha Quadrant seems to be... unexplored? Undeveloped?

Im working my way through every series and I'm on the home stretch (Season 3 of enterprise) and after rewatch DS9 i think is going to remain the most fulfilling show out of all of them. TOS was so hit and miss with incredible highs and lows, TNG was the most consistent but honestly I think in the era of serialized TV the episodic nature doesn't hold up as well as I thought. It's not nearly as bad as voyager because the reset button doesn't feel quite so bad when the Enterprise is in federation space the whole time but there are moments when some things feel rushed. DS9's serialized format holds up so well and the characters are probably the best realized over any show. The mirror universe episodes are pretty trash though. Voyager was just so...there. It felt like an entire show made up up filler. I finished it 2 months ago after watching for most of the year and I've already forgotten most of it. It wasn't bad, it was just there. I'm actually enjoying enterprise more. It feels more flawed but in more interesting ways. It has a lot of little continuity references which feels refreshing after VOY. I liked Season 1, it was a little routine but some of the ideas at work are fun. Season 2 was terribly boring. Season 3 so far has been pretty good (relatively speaking). I also don't know how big of a hot take this is, but I think the NX-o1 might be the coolest looking ship. Also I hope the new series is just Jeffrey Combs playing every character
