Well I took a good crawl under the drat thing today and luckily nothing was too boned but there was some mystery oil hanging off the front of the crank case and the oil pan. I brake cleaned the heck out of it for now and I guess I'll check on it next month when I go back in to replace the steering boots to see if it's reformed. I also replaced the fuel filter while I was under there because I don't know if it's ever been replaced. Some black crap came out of the old one so I guess it was close enough time to do it. Unfortunately the new one was slightly bigger in diameter which resulted in some uncomfortable bracket bending to make it fit. Also the down-pipe heat-shield is now rusted through enough that it rattles quite badly but not quite enough for it to graciously fall off. Clamp it up or hack it off?

I finally bit the bullet and had a shop fix my brake problem. I've missed driving this car so much!

Holy crap that new fuel filter, I had no idea how much power I was actually missing. (as per butt dyno of course, but meh) I was pretty skeptical that it would do anything but now the engine is drinking freely the power delivery has smoothed out considerably. It used to hang a little on first (and reverse) which it turns out is totally not normal and it now just glides away kinda like an actual sports car. I wish I had changed that drat filter earlier!

Well my door handle is popping out a bit, my gas door won't open anymore, and my e brake light flickers on an off. What else will the increasingly cold fall temperatures reveal to me I wonder

Well a new fuel pump didn't solve my misfire, now I'm getting a P0304 cylinder 4 misfire code. It only misfires if I get on the throttle hard, and it doesn't misfire on hard downshifts letting the RPM's get way up which is strange. If I'm slow and smooth on the throttle it doesn't do it. Any ideas? Plugs and wires (ngk) are only about two years old, and I replaced the fuel pump and filter.....Bad injector? Vacuum leak maybe? Compression is good so at least I don't need a motor I'm thinking it might be the coils, any sure fire way to test them?

Check the wires at the coilpack on the 1&4 bank for carbon toastiness. It's free and takes 5 seconds.

Replaced my poor NB that was killed by a hit-and-runner with a purdy lil ole NA today edit: yes I know the headlight covers are misaligned, already fixed I cheated and took the picture while it was still wet, I need to learn how to detail cars now because this color is sick

So I'm thinking about getting a Miata (or MX-5 as they are called over here) as a daily driver. I spend about 1,5 to 2 hours per day in the car so I figured I might as well enjoy it. I'm thinking NB since NA in good condition are getting pretty expensive. I'm keeping my eyes open for both though. Any general tips on what to look for when checking one out? Common problems and fixes? Models/Versions to avoid/buy at any cost?

Timing belt and water pump should be done every 60k miles Valve cover gaskets can leak. Rust, particularly on the rocker panels I think

How much of a pain in the rear end is it to swap headlamps on an NB? The '99 I bought is RHD, so I need to swap them to get it road legal. Also found out the 10th anniversary edition didn't come with AC in the UK, but that doesn't bother me the slightest. It has the 140 HP 1.8L BP-4W motor, 6 speed gearbox, Torsen LSD and ABS at least.

Remove the bumper cover then it is 2 bolts per side. Bumper cover is a half dozen or so plastic clips and 2 screws. Unless you're talking about the bulbs. That is like a minute per side.

It's sparkly clean and brand new looking, although I guess that doesn't really matter. I could switch the coils around to see if the misfire moves, But it takes to long for for the code to show up and I'm not gonna drive it around like that waiting for it to happen. Wish I had a known good set of coils just to check, but nobody close to me has any laying around. Was just gonna take it to my local Miata specialist who is really good at diagnosing poo poo but he's in surgery for something and his garage is closed until he recovers. I'd rather just pay 40 or 50 bux to find out exactly what it is then fix it myself rather than continue throwing parts at what I think might be wrong.

Ordered a bunch of stuff to freshen the new addition up - tires, wiper blades, floor mats, stubby antenna, etc. Had a set of DZ102's all around and only the rears need replacing, and they're good enough performers for now. This thing is awesome, the shifter and brakes are perfect and it sounds amazing. It has an apparently near-unobtanium Nardi teardrop shift knob with 5-speed pattern, but I'd prefer a leather knob and since it's actually a 6-speed I want something with the proper pattern on it just in case someone else has to drive it. It's the perfect shape and weight, but wood just isn't really my thing. Is there a good all-black leather OEM knob to look for that has the correct shift pattern? Or OEM-looking aftermarket? edit: Nice, picked up a 6-speed leather OEM/Nardi. DEUCE SLUICE fucked around with this message at 02:59 on Oct 19, 2016 |

Trip report on the new headlamps: didn't have to drop the bumper cover, but it was fiddly and ofc a bolt broke. Got the car inspected today as well, no real issues. I hardly slept the last couple of nights due to some of the horror stories, but the only painful bit ended up being the emissions based tax. This car is a bundle of fun tho. Can't wait to test it on the track.

Anyone in this thread ever actually cured the 65 mph shimmy? Mine is getting it bad. Starts in the steering and quickly promotes itself to the entire chassis. I don't really want to go down the rabbit hole of "rebalance your tires every year!" that Mnet seems to think you need to do, because I suspect my issue is actually something else worn on the car. My old 91 which was completely hogged out with twice the mileage never had this problem. I've got a '97 with not a whole heck of a lot of kilometers on 225-width Rivals and the heaviest, shittiest Motegi rims ever made. I've got a spare NA8 driveshaft in the basement but I'm unsure how to test my current one to see if it would be any better.

I got rid of it with a roadforce balance. Also had the FM frame rails & a HD roll bar but not sure that really did anything for that.

Seat Safety Switch posted:I don't really want to go down the rabbit hole of "rebalance your tires every year!" that Mnet seems to think you need to do I wouldn't think that tires go "out of balance", except if you lose balance weights, have very bad/uneven tire wear, or actual damage to tire/rim. I have it too, but it doesn't really bother me much (on long drives I can usually go slightly faster or slower than the resonance speed). I'm pretty certain my tires aren't well balanced though, as I mounted them myself and only did static balancing. I do wonder why the Miata seems so susceptible to this though. Could imagine a combination of the rather tight and responsive steering transmitting vibrations more than most other cars, and Miata enthusiasts being a bit more sensitive/picky than the general population.

If I want it to stop I have to be going over about 140-150 or below 95. It's another reason I am suspicious of the "tire balance" explanation.

Back in the day when I had a '91 with HORRIBLE shimmy, I was working with a guy who developed the PPF stabilizer kit that you can get from Goodwin these days. He gave me one to get my impressions and it almost completely eliminated the shimmy. Kinda surprised how expensive the thing is though, it's just a slab of metal and some urethane bushings to dampen vibration, but it does work pretty good.

So whats smarter/more fun? NA, 90HP, 100000km on the clock, good condition Or NB 110HP, 160000km on the clock, mediocre condition? Cost about the same.
