IPAs are a good way to ease yourself into drinking beers that aren't lagers, Kite. They are like the next level up from lagers (although there are nice lagers that are not Budweiser et al), and then once you are used to IPAs you can start drinking darker, hoppier beers. That's how I did it, anyway. There's so many fancy craft beers available nowadays that I tend to just order whatever at a bar and see how it goes, it's more fun than drinking the same thing every time you go out with your buds. Enjoy the variety!

By no means limit yourself to them though- if you're feeling saucy try an IPA, a typically pretty-hoppy high-ish ABV beer that almost every brewery makes at least one of one of due to their popularity. Or a Pale Ale, basically the little brother of the IPA in terms of hoppiness and typical ABV.

The taps in the bar or the sign behind the bar will generally tell you what kind of beer it is (IPA, Amber, lager, etc). Otherwise just ask the barman/woman/person because they will probably know exactly what they all are from having to explain it to patrons every night for weeks.

Oh hey, beer chat. Craft brands vary with local, but Summer Wheat or Lemon Shandy are good, light beers to start with. Through most of college I didn't like the taste of beer and drank stricktly whiskey. Developing you pallet to include beer will do you a lot of favors in life, just broadening your horizons in general really. What I'd recommend is a little unorthodox, but if there's a bar near you with a large variety on tap and you go during slow hours, you can talk to the bar tender about your situation and ask for samples of their recommendations. Pay for at least two and tip well, but you can get a sip of an IPA and a lager and learn the difference and hopefully find something you like. This also sounds dumb, but you're going to have to power through the taste for the first few beers. It takes time to develop a tolerance to the distinct beer flavor, but drink a few at a time a few times a month and you'll know what you like.

I welcome the coming hops shortage so that maybe the beer aisles at stores will stop being 3/4 IPAs. Good lord that fad of horrible beers needs to die. Trust me Kite, you're looking for Hefeweizens. Most companies make at least one and they should all be fine. Hefes are the boss  Just tell the waiter you want a Hefeweizen or a wheat beer and they'll know. Even American brewing company Hefes are fine.Do not trust anybody who tells you to start with IPAs. They're popular with hipsters because most people hate them, although that's not to say nobody actually likes them, just that it is a VERY aquired taste. Beers like that you won't have to 'get used to'. Its the dark stouts like Guinness or the strong bitter IPAs that take getting used to. But if you drink a few shock tops or blue moons, you'll get a feel for it (while not being disgusted) and then you'll suddenly start liking the IPAs. (or not)  That's a great way to get started. When friends of mine tell me they don't like the taste of beer, I order them a Shock Top and they almost always realize they just don't like dark beers. IPAs are too bitter for my taste, and stouts are too strong. But finding a nice middle ground with wheat has served me just fine and I've many great times with it and friends (and without, can't watch a debate sober)

Past the first couple dungeons you lose damage races hard, so the game becomes significantly about damage mitigation and avoidance. Also don't use your food to heal unless you're desperate.

Lumping all IPAs in together doesn't really work. Hoppier ones have certainly been the trend for several years now but there's still plenty of great ones lower down the IBU scale. I usually find 50-60 is my upper limit depending on the other qualities because higher than that starts to taste like I'm drinking liquid aluminum but under that I enjoy lots of IPAs.

I thought the over representation of IPAs was just a coastal thing until I went to the local microbrewery and 7 out of 11 of their beers on tap were IPAs, but that didn't stop me from getting their hoppiest one

It really depends on the hops, if you load it up with cascade it's going to taste exactly like every other citrusy IPA. Different hops have different flavor and aroma. I had a Imperial IPA made with Warrior hops and it was just as filling as other Imp IPAs but it wasn't as overwhelmingly bitter and I could still taste the malts.
