About crackdowns... I lived in China through most of the 80's. One of the overt effects of crackdowns at that time was the oscillation in clothing. Everyone still had their Mao suits and almost all non-Mao suit clothes would disappear during crackdowns. You could kind of read what was going on in the large cities from the clothing. Except for children who even in fairly rural areas were often elaborately and colorfully dressed. It was roughly the first generation of the one child policy. If you were a woman you had to register your menstrual cycles with your work unit. No internet or any such, so crackdowns were also accompanied by large billboards touting whatever values. They were kind of beautiful in that huge nationalistic/Maoist style... Brave warriors, rippling flags, resolute faces. I don't think that sort of overt social response would happen now. Once it became good to be rich cyclic crackdowns probably couldn't overtly effect the extreme materialist culture that arose. Even by Tian An Men that didn't really happen in the same way it had. Hard to imagine what would have to happen to stuff everyone obediently back into their Mao suits, or some equivalent. http://www.npr.org/sections/parallels/2016/10/20/497030334/chinas-internet-stars-embrace-lowbrow-and-aim-for-high-profits This was interesting to me relative to the contact lens conversation and how casually they talk about plastic surgery for the sake of being an "internet star".

If Duterte goes full retard and tears up the treaty and kicks out the US bases it will be a strategic headache to be sure, but it won't fundamentally alter the balance of power in the region because the Guam-Okinawa-Taiwan defense triangle still exists, the Philippines are still wired with undersea sensors monitored by the US and Japan, and Vietnam is still aligning even more closely with the US. That's one of the reasons that Duterte is so stupid. Even if the sole thing he cared about more than anything in the world was ruining the US's day he still doesn't do that with this, all it is is one of the greatest self-owns in international history.

Nutrition will eventually off set that though. If you go to old German castles in Europe the ceilings and doorways are super short and the average height was 150cm. After generations of farmers and better nutrition the average height got taller. With the westernization of diets and increased protein uptake everyone's going to grow

My boss: "He was working for some financial company and the boss stole a bunch of money. When the police came, the boss pointed at (TCM guru) and said he stole the money, and then he paid the police to take him away." Me: "Hory poo poo. No evidence? Just jail for 12 years?" "I don't care if he's poor or stupid, he can't have a round belly. Chinese men all get round bellies, even if they are slim. I cannot accept this." 4) They don't know how to dress - "Their clothes are so outdated and their fashion is so bad. Even men with money wear sloppy clothes. They look like children. I don't know how Chinese women allow this. Nobody teaches them to wear good clothes." 5) "Why are they so loud?" On top of this she thinks all Han Chinese are monsters and liars and cheaters, so she might have been a little bit biased.
