angryrobots posted:GM uses it currently for the Camaro, and had the SS Trailblazer and Silverado at the same time as the FWD cars you idiots are bitching about. You're right, the Trailblazer is definitely the kind of truck that needs a Super Sport designation, as it is a sports car after all. No, I can't think of anything sportier than a 1/2 ton truck built on a platform that never had a single manual transmission. What's even sportier is how poorly it handled due to its hosed center of gravity that made it rival the Suburban and the Explorer in its ability to corner. You're definitely not helping prove the point that using SS as a blanket trim package for all vehicles instead of using it specifically for its sports cars and sport sedans devalued the SS name. No sir

The trailblazer SS probably handled better than the 60s impala SS or chevelle SS. It was probably faster in a straight line, too. Compare that to the malibu maxx SS which was.....the malibu maxx ss

You are making the assumption that the SS moniker had any value at any time, or was anything other than a trim level. Which it was, and is.... Except in the case of the poorly named American market Commodore. Chevy is great at putting together excellent drivetrains and sticking them in poorly designed ill-fitted and finished bodies with dumpster fire interiors, and at that the modern SS trim level cars carry the tradition well. angryrobots fucked around with this message at 17:29 on Oct 23, 2016 |

Ok, I think we can all get behind this statement. I was thinking about marketing their Corvette sedan as the SS being meaningless to the average consumer after the HHR, Mali-Maxx, and Trailblazer SS packages, and probably detrimental to the success of a car people seem to like, but every muscle car guy I know would get a hard on any time we saw anything classic with those chrome S's on it. I thought it actually meant something, but I should have known better than that

You could get the SS TRIM PACKAGE on any 75 or 76 Nova (including the straight six and 3-speed wheeze-o-matic) but assuming you checked all the sporty boxes you would get yourself a 4 on the floor pushed by a mighty 165 hp tree-fiddy! Stop muddying the SS name with your wrong wheel drive GM!

It doesn't surprise me that GM named the Commodore the SS when they imported it. They haven't marketed it, and they never planned to. They only brought it to compete in NASCAR, and they had to sell 5000 stateside to be able to do that. After that they could give a poo poo less. The only reason they even keep selling them is the ridiculous reviews they inevitably got led to some industry pressure. GM is going to be shuttering Holden in a year or two anyway (can't remember which), and with that, we'll have lost one of the last real bastions of quality GM muscle car design. For fucks sake, the 2010 to 2015 Camaro is the Aussie designed Zeta chassis used in the Commodore (and thus the G8). After that, it's going to be Corvettes and Camaros forever.

Eh that's the story I heard, shows what happens when you don't fact check. What was their reasoning for bringing an ace car like that and not marketing it at all then? Edit: as a matter of fact, that was the basic reasoning reported when the car first came online in the US. https://www.yahoo.com/news/bp/2014-chevrolet-ss-aussie-built-nascar-races-america-050213874.html Just one of a number of articles I found. Oh and the standard GM interior, costing ~$50K. How would a company whose latest commercials include "hey guys our cheap car's headlights sort of look like an Audi's if you squint right" market that at all?
