Mayor Dave posted:For some reason in my most recent game recently planted forests were just as effective for this purpose, meaning there was no reason not to clear cut the world way back when. Old-growth forests get an extra bonus, but forests you plant are enough in most cases, yeah. One of the things that's really rough about going wide is... again, the UI. Why the heck isn't there a build queue? You can look at a list of your cities but you can't sort them by yields, and you can't tab through your city screens like you can with a single keypress like you could in, like, every other Civ game ever

How do people get run over by barbs so early? Unless you believe you can defend your empire for the first 100 turns turns with your starting warrior, a very solid idea is prioritize units and pick the discipline policy which comes around turn 15. Solid start i've found is scout -> builder -> slinger -> granary depending on techs you take, no barb will hinder your start. Tested with Germany and I had 4 archers, plus my starting barb by turn 37 along with a 2nd city started, and had a city state captured by turn 50 on emperor difficulty.

Comstar posted:The manual apparently states this, this is not a bug. So you can have 200 cities and 500 copies of a luxury resource, but only the most saddest cities will get it. So Nome, Alaska gets the finest luxuries in the world, but New York City that has 100 times the population gets none. You only use 4 of any luxury item. It's to limit how tall you can get when going wide. If luxuries applied to every city equally then you could grab some wine, silver, incense and diamonds and 30 cities would grow at the same rate as 3.

Just won a culture victory as Gorgo on King. Probably gonna bump up the difficulty again, and keep doing that till I start losing. Gorgo seems very powerful. Plato's Republic is an extremely powerful ability, and her leader ability is early-game focused unlike Pericles' mid- and late-game focused one. My strategy was basically to be a huge warmonger through the entire classical and medieval eras, the back off once I started meeting people on the other continent and coast to an easy win from the insane culture slingshot perpetual war gives you as Gorgo.

Failboattootoot posted:I disagree and it's probably going to be my biggest complaint with this game. More cities just means more poo poo I have to keep an eye on and passed a certain point it feels more like busy work and less like building a civilization. I don't mind it if wide is optimal as long as tall works, but I don't think going tall can manage to get the production it needs. There are no bonuses for playing tall, but there are some pretty significant diminishing returns for going wide. Increased District build time means that by the time you're getting your 6th or 9th or so city running at full capacity, you've probably already won the game and setting up those cities was probably a waste of time.

Balancing tall and wide is a real hard thing to do in these games but I think they've a decent foundation here if it's something they'll want to improve upon.

So I am pretty sure liberating a city-state and killing off Russia at the same time is making me unable to make a next turn. Great bug. EDIT: Oh right, it's just the liberation part. Russia still has a city somewhere. Kandy doesn't get put back to the city-state screen, though. Weird.Descar posted:I hate this, i like building huge empires and civ5 ruined that.. and now civ6 has the same logic... argh... I haven't had a problem going wide so far. Someone asked earlier about why you would ever want to pass on a great person. Here's a good example: I have no holy sites and zero interest in generating faith, so even though this guy is a Great Scientist I have absolutely no use for him. Would rather let the Aztecs have him and get the next one.

So, random observations: Russia: Lavras are pretty powerful, it is a bit of an act to actually have spots for all the great writers etc. though. Starting with extra territory around your cities is pretty great, huge tracts of land ftw. The occassional Tundra luxury or resource tile indeed get strong, if you go for the tundra pantheon, stuff can get indeed quite decent. My games where over before cossaks so I cant comment on them. HRE: Bit RNG dependendt. Hope that cities were well placed. Beeline archery, 2 archers and a warrior are sufficient to take non walled cities from citystates. Kind of hard to build all the districts, but you get an extra distcit which should probably be industrial. This turns you into a productive powerhouse midgame.

I haven't had much play time yet but I've caught up with the thread, I have to echo all the UI concerns a thousand fold. Why the civilopedia and tooltips are so sparse is beyond me. I'm gonna stick a FAQ in the OP (for things like why can't my city bombard) and a list of QOL quick wins (like disabling intro, etc). Will happily take suggestions.

This game needed another 3-6 months in development. It has lots of neat gameplay design concepts that seem to have been left half-finished, such as AI agendas, the nitty gritty of religious warfare, the way that luxuries and amenities are distributed. On top of that it just has some critical design flaws that can only be chalked up to laziness/rushing the product out like the horrible civilopedia, complete lack of information or tutorials on many game concepts, the hilariously lackluster hotkeys and poorly payed out UI. Given the announcement for this game came out of the blue on a random weekday, it seems like the higher ups just decided it was time to release the game at random without any regard to if it was actually ready.

Won a game without getting into a single war. Religious victory. Everyone hated me for converting their cities, but I guess I wasn't close enough to bother declaring war on. I suppose I was also lucky that my immediate neighbor was steadily conquering the world militarily, but never founded a religion so he didn't care what I was doing one way or another. Most of the game was spent in theological combat with other people's Apostle's in that guy's territory. The takeaway I got from it was that theological combat makes a Religious victory almost exactly like a Military victory, except there are only 3 units and you don't have to declare war. It's just as tedious and there is almost no reason to bother with the religion game if you aren't trying to win like that. Clarste fucked around with this message at 11:39 on Oct 23, 2016 |

In my current Rome game I am at a state where I can pretty much choose between conquest or science victory. I am over a full age ahead of everyone else(I've been in the atomic age for like 10 turns and finally others are hitting modern), so my military could wipe the floor with anyone, or I just finish the science victory while France and Japan waste their time having a religion war. Which Japan should win with their 300+ faith income vs France's 100, but he keeps suiciding a portion of his apostles on my Inquisitor army. Probably go with science as it is now interesting.

Nah Civ has always released in a state that needs patching and tweaking to some extent. Honestly I think Civ V took til the first expansion for me to click with it. That said I don't get of what you claim really. Eg, there are tutorials. Doubt it was rush released given it was in dev for like four to six years. First Civ for you?

There is a tutorial. It doesn't clearly explain many of the major concepts of the game like the details of how luxuries and amenities work for example. The civilopedia is also garbage. Which is why this thread is full of people asking about it constantly. Also just because it always releases like that doesn't mean that every Civ could probably have used extra development time.

Meanwhile, the Aztecs are trying to send knights and guys with pointy sticks into my territory before making it one tile in and getting machine gunned/bombed to death. It's been 150 years and they won't declare peace. Just suiciding into what they see as magical flashy boomsticks.
