I cannot tell you how annoyed I am that I didn't realize that, having now played through it with the team (for the Tails run the actual episodes are made up of) and on my own (for the Sonic run used for footage in the MJ/intro videos).

I am a colossal idiot.

Not the biggest error in the world, but aggravating that I didn't catch that no matter what I did, I couldn't get the other two minigames. Odds are, that fuckup will turn up for the Sonic & Knuckles intro.

We most absolutely are! I believe it will be the very last thing we do before playing Sonic Adventure.

It's was harrowing hearing them talk about not being able to get all the emeralds while being less than one screen length away from a ring.

And Super Tails is such a complete afterthought, particularly since it's amazingly easy for it to create an unwinnable scenario in a couple of areas, though the flash of the Hyper's can also cause it.

So what was the originally planed level order for Sonic 3? They must have adjusted a few of them a bit to keep the difficulty curve reasonable.

ricdesi

Allegedly, the initial order was planned to be:

  • Angel Island Zone
  • HydroCity Zone
  • Marble Garden Zone
  • Carnival Night Zone
  • Flying Battery Zone (shot from the cannon in Carnival Night Zone)
  • Ice Cap Zone (using the broken door from Flying Battery Zone as a makeshift snowboard)
  • Launch Base Zone
  • Mushroom Valley Zone (original name)
  • Sandopolis Zone
  • Lava Reef Zone*
  • Hidden Palace Zone*
  • Sky Sanctuary Zone*
  • Death Egg Zone*
  • The Doomsday Zone*

with * indicating zones completely unavailable in Sonic 3, most likely made after the initial split, but possibly before Limited Edition was cancelled.

Huh. That snowboard angle totally fits. Funny, though, since when you guys mentioned in the videos that Flying Battery was originally going to be in Sonic 3 (something I did not know) I assumed it would have come after Angel Island or something; that it would have been explicitly tied tot he big gently caress-off airship towards the end of act 2.

Anyway, just wanted to also say I'm loving your LP so far - all of them - and I *really* enjoy the extra mile you guys go to with the whole brief history of stuff. Those are all golden.

That reminds me. You said in one of the videos that there weren't drowning mechanics in Sonic and Knuckles. Did you mean that literally, i.e. the code for drowning doesn't exist, or did you simply mean there was nowhere to drown?

Which is so weird, because we brought that up later on, and the ship from Angel Island Zone Act 2 looks NOTHING like the Flying Battery. I have no idea what that ship is, it never gets shown again. As far as the "snowdoord" goes, that wound up inspiring the intro to the opening level of Sonic Adventure 2!

Thank you so much! We love getting to put those kinds of videos together, it's really neat to be able to take a closer look at some of the finer details of the history of video games. I think I know what the next big video like that I want to do is.

Dzhay posted:

Part of me wonders if the original idea was that at the halfway point, Angel Island would start to rise into the sky again (like it is during Knuckles' version of Sky Sanctuary Zone), hence the water more or less draining out of the edges of Floating Island. That said, Flying Battery Zone injected into the earlier half does help split up the water zones a bit:

  • Angel Island Zone (water)
  • HydroCity Zone (water)
  • Marble Garden Zone (no water)
  • Carnival Night Zone (water)
  • Flying Battery Zone (no water)
  • Ice Cap Zone (water)
  • Launch Base Zone (water)
  • remainder of Sonic & Knuckles (no water)

I'm not 100% certain if the drowning mechanic is in the game (John ad libbed that line a little bit), but the drowning music at the very least is not in the game at all (nor the air bubbles, IIRC).

And now, since I've been so chatty, here's today's video!

When you go to do S3&K, do you plan on pointing out the Sonic 3 areas that are Knuckles-only? (I know that, as early as the first zone, there's a path only he can take.) And do you plan to do S2&K as well?

For the longest time I didn't even realize that sky sanctuary, death egg, or doomsday existed because I only had S&K, and the lack of a save system meant that Knuckles was really the only character I could beat the game with in one sitting.

Of course with the stage select code you can force knuckles into Death Egg (which the game handles fairly well) or Doomsday (Which it most assuredly does not)

You can get him into the Death Egg but I'm pretty sure it's impossible for Knuckles to defeat the boss of Act 1 due to his smaller jump height.

In S3K with Debug mode on you can also use the stage select to force him into the Lava Reef boss area or Sonic's Sky Sanctuary (Knuckles does technically play the stage in his story but it's just a boss fight). You can also use it to force Tails into Doomsday (and unlike Sonic or Knuckles he's for some reason given infinite Rings in that stage) or have Sonic/Tails play Knuckles' version of Sky Sanctuary.

I've beaten death egg as knuckles so it's possible, it may require you be hyper knuckles but it's possible.

But at least on my cart, doomsday zone results in knuckles turning into a horrifying jumble of vaguely super sonic shaped sprites, followed by an end credits sequence with a blue knuckles riding on a plane flown by sonic to deliver the master emerald to a red knuckles and two or three copies of the ending "sonic 3 & knuckles" graphic layering over each other turning knuckles into an eight limbed punching machine.

Getting Knuckles into places he doesn't belong (as well as Sonic and Tails) is always pretty amusing, especially since it seems wildly inconsistent what is and isn't allowed. Blue Knuckles seems to be a pretty common end result of just about any screwing around (and interestingly enough, if you pause at the right time, Blue Knuckles is on spinning signposts throughout Sonic 3

Anyway, I was super strapped yesterday and didn't get a chance to update the thread -- here are the final two episodes of Sonic & Knuckles, and in an hour we'll be dropping what was meant to be a second video for yesterday. Enjoy!

e: Reading up on it more, the super emeralds themselves aren't technically supposed to have happened, and were created so that you'd have something to do in the lock-on. You're just collecting the same 7 emeralds over and over again since Sonic 2.

There's an eighth special stage (and emerald) you can get to by cheating in both Sonic 3 and S&K. Back when I last cared about Sonic things the rumour was that Sega were going to continue the pattern of 1 more emerald per game, is there any truth to that?

Yeah... they were never super great about plotholes in the early days. The Super Emeralds definitely seem to be just the Chaos Emeralds (from Westside Island) powered up, but it's odd that they were separated for so long (as well as the awkwardness of Knuckles being able to find Chaos Emeralds on his own after Sonic and Tails leave the island...)

I had heard something like that, but never found anything too conclusive, and it ended up striking me as a theory floated more after the fact than during. My suspicion is that "Special Stage 8" (which is just a giant spiral, weirdly enough) was either a prototype left in, or a test of the Blue Sphere setup.

Either way, let's get it on with two new videos for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles!

It works a lot better than jumping over red spheres to get at blues and doing all these crazy manoeuvres because I Must Have This Sphere Now.

I think I played through this too many times when I was a kid.
