Ya, the tech's just the metaphor but if you change Social Media Points or w/e to Money the episode's super transparent.
Lady wants to get apartment outside of her price range but doesn't have the "points", she could get there extremely slowly doing what she is doing (slowly because the people who like her are service industry workers who don't have very many "points" so aren't particularly influential) or she could make it skyrocket when she gets the chance to make connections with a speech at a wedding (on an island!) with people who have a ton of points.
Then as her points go down her options get more limited she has to get shittier things (garbo car) she starts getting trapped because people with higher points don't trust her & the only person who's willing to talk to her is someone with almost no points (a trucker) who tells her she stopped caring about points when after working extremely hard to scrape together enough points to get her husband in a clinical trial he was denied because someone with more points got in

Holy moly man. Literally everyone who watched this got the metaphor. We don't need a wall of text explaining it. I was specifically responding to a post that referred to the social media aspect which is the theme of the show as well as a running theme of Black Mirror in general. Yes/no?

Maybe it's because it's been years since the last season but I don't remember anything quite as blatant as the brother standing in the kitchen literally shouting at the camera that "people used to have real conversations before these darn newspapers TVs phones social networks came along! I'll definitely watch the other episodes later.

Yeah that is the post I responded to. What is your point?

Acknowledging the theme does not equal missing the metaphor. It was two people talking about the social media part of the show and you popped in like "wake up sheeple it's about class!"

The brother isnt a mouthpiece for the show & theres nothing particularly "blatant" about that conversation unless u think its reinforcing themes of the episode...which it isnt

Technology is ruining everything!" & thats an undercurrent to every episode? Just that episode? what about that conversation is "a bit much"?

To get away from whatever this is, I watched Meek's Cutoff. Probably the slowest paced western I've ever seen, but it really drives home the drudgery of pioneer travel. The night scenes are usually entirely in the dark, save for a single lantern in some scenes. You really feel how interminable the real-life journey must have been. There's not much action or score, but there are a couple tense moments. Bruce Greenwood kinda steals the show as the fast-talking guide, Meek, who was a real guide into Oregon during the era.

I agreed with someone that a conversation in the show was hammy and acknowledged that the show has a cynical view of social media, which for some reason warranted "but it's about class"

The show can be about social media and still be a metaphor for class. I explained this multiple times which is why I think it wasn't worth bothering anymore.

I think the degree to which social media is bent in order to serve as a metaphor 4 class essentially saps it of it functioning as any sort of critique of social media. When u agreed with someone who said that having the brother ranting about social media making us lose touch with others was too blatant, it implies that the episode (or the show? ur replies still arent clear) was drawing attention to an absurd degree to its central message (that being, I guess, "people used to have real conversations before these darn newspapers TVs phones social networks came along! Technology is ruining everything!" ) . The point being that that is not the central message or even (I would argue) a secondary message of that episode.

Secretly force socialism, communism and imperialism types of government onto the people of the United States of America.

Yo is anyone else watching this new Hulu show, Chance? Hugh Laurie plays a somewhat anti-social doctor, whose life is somewhat of a mess. Aside from that and some similar cinematic decisions it's almost completely nothing like House. I'm really enjoying it.

mild spoilers, if only because I think it's best to go into the show blind It swerves hard from the medical aspect into noir vigilante (almost superhero-y) poo poo, with heavy moral and ethical overtones.

Ethan Suplee is really good. Channels some Full Metal Jacket Vincent D'Onofrio.

And also to see the producer of Academy Award for Best Animated Feature nominee Anomalisa dressed up like Sean Connery in Zardoz.

I've been side-eying Cleverman on Netflix for a while and kept putting it off because the summary sounded awful.

Finally got around to starting it tonight and it's an Aussie series which actually features very heavily into the racial divide between Aboriginals and white settlers. A lot of the racial stuff is really on the nose in the first episode, but it quickly gets muddied. SIr Jorah Mormont is featured heavily, as well as what I assume are a lot of local actors.

The "hairy" thing is really weird for the first episode and then it seems to be used a lot more gracefully and subtly, and there's some Aboriginal magic as well as mumbo jumbo about the hairy people, as well as your typical X-Men style internment camps and conspiracies. The "Cleverman" is apparently some kind of mythical figure in aboriginal lore, who's able to walk the line between dreams and waking, and act as a conduit for people on both sides.

It got picked up for a second season a couple months ago.

Probably because of this:

What's good on Netflix in terms of explicitly supernatural horror? I like creature features, cosmic / ancient evil, or someone's psychological scars represented as a literal monster better than ghosts or Christian-flavored demons.

Which the movie does up until the last minute or so. v:shobon:v

I really like the San Junipero episode, it touched on some things that the show hasn't really explored yet and no I'm not talking about the sex stuff.

They could have gotten a fourth season with Amazon but Fuller decided to work on American Gods instead. Just in case season 3 wasn't enough of a hint that he was getting tired of the show.

Fuller desperately wanted to do a fourth season with Amazon, but (at least the way he tells the story) Amazon picking it up was contingent upon going into production almost immediately, whereas Fuller wanted time to get the season's scripts written in advance prior to shooting -- which Amazon wasn't amenable to. So Fuller started focusing on American Gods with Starz.

New season of Black Mirror was good, though kinda sloppy in places. Interesting that they're moving a little away from the faceless antagonists who win at the end. They still have it, like the first episode and the blackmail one, but the bee robot guy was literally being hunted at the end and the video game guy was straight up an accident.

Was the video game guy an accident? It seemed like that had happened a bunch previously so they basically knew what they were doing as far as I could tell.

It's not 100% clear. They did know about interactions with the game and phones, but it was his fault for turning it on.

Realistically, they should have (and probably would have IRL) just taken his phone before he even entered the room, but you need some drama.

Yeah, I was surprised that the cell phone being there and available to him wasn't part of the game or something, or that didn't purposefully gently caress him up because they saw him taking the picture. Not that being surprised is a problem, but I'm not sure what the point is then. Presumably it relates to the connection they suggested to turning off phones on airplanes, but I found that hard to read as well. (Black Mirror season 3 "Playtest" spoilers)

It is a funny movie, but the ads were seriously some of the biggest bull-poo poo bait-and-switch from "Spy Movie" to "Screwball Comedy".

That said, it's one of the most Coen-esque Coen Bros movie, with not a single character knowing what the gently caress is going on, absurdity invading mundane life, and graphic violence coming out of nowhere. It's definitely a movie that grows in enjoyment with each viewing.

Most Coen Bros movies are tough to accurately portray in trailers and ads, because they have such a unique and bizarre tone. Almost all of them are seriously funny in parts, and just as disturbing in others. Hollywood advertising people have always had a really tough time with black comedy, see also: The Cable Guy and Death to Smoochy.
