One of my favorite Hollywood stories concerns the making of The Conqueror, a typical lunatic Howard Hughes idea, starring John Wayne as Genghis Khan. It's a famously awful movie and it flopped magnificently. It was filmed in the 1950s in the Nevada desert, just downwind from the Nevada Test Range (where they were still doing above-ground nuke tests), so everyone got a good dose of radioactivity during the production. Even better, after viewing the rough cut, Hughes decided to shoot some additional scenes on a soundstage in Hollywood (because it was too difficult to spin up production again on location and the cast and crew had all moved on to their next projects) so he had them truck in semi-trailers full of sand and soil from the location so the additional filming wouldn't look too out of place in the movie. Another week or two for everyone, in an enclosed soundstage, breathing that fallout-rich dust.

Literally every single person involved in that movie (including Wayne) died young of cancer.

Punchline: no one knows what happened to the dirt from the shoot or where it ended up. Presumably dumped in a lot or a canyon somewhere, and had condos later built on top of it.

e: My memory was largely (but not entirely) correct -

It amazes me that John Freakin' Wayne playing Genghis Khan is only the second most infamous thing about that movie.

Bortai: The Conqueror? Mighty armies cannot stop him. But one touch of my lips... Yes, he captured me - but he cannot tame me.

Hunlun: My son has won the world. Still he must conquer that red-headed Jezebel.

Temujin: We'll chase them like rats across the tundra.

Hunlun: She will bring woe to you and your people, my son! A woman made wife against her will can be a dangerous foe!

Temujin: For good or ill - she is my destiny.

Kumlek: [to Temujin] Joint by joint from the toe and fingertip upward shall you be cut to pieces, and each carrion piece, hour by hour and day by day, shall be cast to the dogs before your very eyes until they too shall be plucked out as morsels for the vultures.

Bortai: For me, there is no peace while you live, Mongol.

Temujin: You're beautiful in your wrath.

[His bride-to-be tries to escape]
Temujin: I stole you. I will keep you. Before the sun sets you will come willingly to my arms.

Temujin: She is a woman - much woman. Should her perfidy be less than that of other women?

Temujin: While I live, while my blood burns hot, your daughter is not safe in her tent.

Yeah, ‘dark dungeons’ about D&D and ‘the death cookie’ about Catholic communion were my favs.

You'd think that these days, Freepers would be completely on board with Chick's Catholic-hating. Hell, most of them have said things in the past few months that would be right at home in one of Chick's anti-Catholic tracts.

I can totally see them being on board with thinking Chick was soft on Islam (saying we should convert them rather than murder them), as well as his Jewish tracts that say "All Jews are going to Hell," not that I think most Freepers would disagree with that, but may be upset that he said it outright instead of secretly believing it while paying lip service to the Jews to use them as bait for the Jesus trap.

Over the past 35 years of marriage, I’ve learned that these rules apply to housework:

1) Mens’s Work is Men’s Work.
2) Women’s Work must be split 50/50.
3) Once a man does a traditional Woman’s Work task more than 3 times, it becomes Men’s Work.
4) Go back to #2 and renegotiate the 50/50 split.
5) See #3.
6) Repeat #2 and #3 until almost all work is Men’s Work.
7) Go to social gatherings and hang out with other wives and bitch about how “little” your husband does based on the original 50/50 split.

To be fair, every gay person in the various circles did their part.

If gays were as monogamous or sexually limited as heteros, HIV would never got to the size it was.

The history of HIV shows it has several waves from the jungles of Africa. Only when it got to population centers did it finally get out of Africa. From there it killed a handful here and there as heterosexual monogamy and drug use kept it tightly clustered. Once it hit the gay scene, like a wildfire.

Revisionist history. We know he wasn’t the first but he was the main instigator spreading the disease far and wide, as he admittedly had hundreds of sex partners a YEAR!

I think most people discussing this issue of gay men exclusively spreading HIV is a bogus issue. What the CDC and the sexually knowledgeable community do know is that gay guys and bisexual guys were on the leading edge but the bisexuals spread it into the hetero community and to their wives and boy/girl friends. It got confusing rather quickly and, as noted, that is over and done with. Now we have to treat all who are infected and continue to teach how NOT to get the virus.

No, we don’t have to treat them. Their disease is not our obligation.

We should quarantine and isolate them.

There was a reason why it was called GRID. Gay-Related Immune Deficiency.

Sorry, but gay men are indeed the main spreaders of the infection. Most of the people who are hetro who get it usually get it from sharing needles with, you guessed it, gays.

It is not at all confusing and teaching how not to get the virus is rather simple. Stop having anal sex in bathrooms with men you don't know.

If they would do that the spread would slow down to a crawl and then stop.

GOLLOCKS!
It never fails to astound me when they hate on the stereotype of underground gay culture for being promiscuous and then rail against supporting long term monogamy via gay marriage.

I'll be active again here on Sunday, currently moving house. Hopefully news will continue to be boring so the grand freakout on election night will be more sweet.

Well if every person besides them just did their part and fixed every single problem, then the world would be a much better place. Since, as mighty white Christian cis straight old Republican men, have to suffer the existence of and have the difficulty of enlightening all those lessers, they are exempt from having to ever work on such a matter.

It's the only fair thing.

Man, Conservative Jesus is real different from the JC I've been taught about when I was young.

Also I'm 99% sure that if these guys could have 1000 different sexual partners they'd be all over it while still claiming they respect trad family values. As always the only issue they have is, oh my God, gay guys.

He actually touched lepers which was insane at the time, because they knew that was how the disease was transmitted. And leprosy back then was not like HIV now - it wasn't "take this bucket of pills each day, you'll probably be fine" it was "you will die horribly and painfully and alone."

HIV hasn't been like that for a while either, they're down to three pills a day

Fun fact: what the Bible calls leprosy was actually a collection of diseases. Many weren't even lethal at all - they were just exceptionally disfiguring and gross. (There is an actual disease called leprosy, which is pretty nasty, but it wasn't the only leprosy, so to speak.) The medieval Church held that leprosy was a divine curse (and so could only be lifted by the mercy of God).
