So the touch bar is going to kill dual-booting into Windows via boot camp, right?

for the purpose of DJing or music performance, the touch bar is a toy compared to a real controller. Could be really great for navigating around in a DAW, or maybe for adjusting a fader or something, but actual performance ... no way.

The early reviews say the new MBP is a beautiful machine and the keyboard is awesome. Maybe we're all just being goons. neonnoodle posted:Yup. I was waiting to see if there would be any desktop Mac refresh/renaissance (like a return of some kind of Powermac expandable tower format hahahaha loving hell no ), but today I put in an order for a Dell desktop. I need a new computer and my iPad is 100% perfection for the kinds of portable needs that a laptop would offer. Max out that boring-rear end tower with tons of RAM and a core i7 for under $800, thank you and goodnight. Yeah, I just built a ridiculously powerful PC for games that cost like $700. I still prefer my Mac Mini, but since my most important software is subscription based it's stupid easy to switch platforms and Windows 10 is...almost good enough. I just wanted one more awesome and decently affordable Mac laptop before tablets took over everything. Alas, my rMBA will only exist in my dreams.

I'm looking at these new machines and seriously thinking about a 13", but for the money, I really can't understand why they bothered spec'ing an i5 at all. There's zero difference I can see on Intel Ark between the i7 and i5 processors in the 13" models, so Apple is using it to gouge. The OLED strip does nothing for me, which is a sentiment echoed throughout this thread. Overall, I'm pretty meh on this update. The only thing it's really bringing to the table is native TB3/USB-C, but the accessory landscape is so fragmented at this point. Maybe a CTO off the 13" base model is the right way to go. PC hardware is looking better and better and I think most people that can afford to wait ought to do so until post CES. krooj fucked around with this message at 17:29 on Oct 28, 2016 |

Well, considering the $400 bump for the base 15" MBP, no real world speed increase with Skylake, and no actual new features, I'll be sticking with my late 2013 15" until it inevitably dies!

amazon had considerable discounts on the brand new mbps for a while, unsure if an intern messed up or it's a sign of things to come. The 15" 512 GB was $800 off.

The keyboard on these will be amazing because the rMB keyboard is amazing. The Smart Keyboard on the 12" iPad pro is also dope af. First portable keyboard I've had that's felt amazing.

Yeah, I happened to be online last evening when the first of them went up, but the link went dead within 10 minutes. Serves me right for not setting up one-click checkout I guess. Apparently they were relisted during the night, but I still suspect it's an intern loving up (or whatever automated listing software they use). There's really no precedent for discounts this deep. I doubt wholesale price to retailers is below this.

To be fair, it does look really nice, and it is a revision of the rMB keyboard, so maybe it feels better/more agreeable for those that didn't like it. I don't think we're being goons, it's just mind-boggling to charge so much for One Crazy New Feature and barely iterative internals, especially when your competitors are gaining ground on your strengths (and in Microsoft's case, out-innovating the poo poo out of you in a time of need.)

Roughly 60% of Lenovo's site doesn't load at all, Dell's site is bogged down with links and search results to ancient products, Razer of all places had the most functional site, even if it's fugly.

I took a wired Mac keyboard home to use with my Win 10 PC. There's a workaround to get the Apple keyboard driver installed so you can permanently activate the FUNCTION KEYS but it caused too much trouble so I'm using the Fn+key method. I used a script to swap the Option and Command keys to get the Start button where I'm used to. That said the only change I'd like is if the keys were just a little bit sculpted. EDIT: It's this one...

Here's the deal. They just changed too much at one time. This is what happened between 2006 and 2012 - 6 years: If you were a user of the original Intel MacBook Pro, or even the G4 PowerBooks, the unibody was a breath of fresh air. Awesome design, you kept all the ports, new keyboard which would become the standard, trackpad that broke the mold, and you could still remove the battery... It wasn't really any faster than the MacBook Pro it replaced as it used basically the same CPU's. The next revision ruffled some feathers as they got rid of Firewire and swapped out DVI output for Mini-DisplayPort. Users had to buy one dongle. It pretty much stayed that way for a while. The Air came out and dropped not only the optical drive, but it also got rid of the hardware ethernet port. People freaked out, but you could get a Thunderbolt adapter for the ethernet port and a USB optical drive. And you still had the option of buying the Pro if you wanted those features. When the Retina came out, they dropped the ethernet and optical drive from the Pro. Nobody cared about the optical drive, but some people still bitched about the ethernet. They solved this problem, sort of - you now have two Thunderbolt ports you can still be plugged into a monitor and use your other port for gig ethernet. And you had an HDMI port, imagine that. Now they're just asking you to give up everything you own and buy all new poo poo, most of which doesn't even exist yet, and in trade you get some stupid blinky bar above the keyboard.

gret posted:How much did people bitch back in the day when the original iMac came out with IIRC only USB ports and dropped ADB and SCSI ports? That wasn't a "pro" machine by any loving means. Those changes are not nearly as significant either. I know everyone has said this 700 times in this thread, but I really feel like Apple is leaving me. I've been a big proponent for years and years. I didn't upgrade my iPhone this year (I almost always do because I'm a fanboy idiot) because I loving use headphones a lot and don't want to use a dongle for that. I also charge and listen to audio at the same time a lot. I've been waiting a year at least, probably 2 for a new MBP refresh for my personal machine and they removed almost every port I use on that AND upped the price a significant amount. It's just insane. Who are they catering to now? I seriously don't know anyone who thinks the lack of headphone jack on the iPhone and lack of USB ports on the MBP are good things. There is plenty of room to have a headphone jack on the iPhone 7. There is plenty of room to have USB-C and USB-A ports on the MBP. This isn't even mentioning all the TB dongles I already have. I'm fine with swapping a dongle for a dongle, but making everything use a dongle or at best a new cable (for $25) is infuriating. Maybe I'm just getting old. I was never bothered by any of the older "major changes" they've done. I really feel like these recent ones are more anti-consumer than ever though.
