I know this isn't directly related to rpgs or board games, but Dr. Chuck Tingle is collaborating with Zoe Quinn to make an adventure game through kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/703752115/kickstarted-in-the-butt-a-chuck-tingle-digital-adv

It's not particularly specific about what will change from the 1st edition, but I trust Avery as a designer and it sounds like she's committed to dealing with the 1st edition's issues and bringing it up to the state of the art re: inclusivity and player safety.

If my tumblr feed is to be believed, there are no straight people under 20. Of course, that's tumblr, there's probably only a few hundred straight people on it who aren't running porn bots.

Anyway, backed because I support the idea of Monsterhearts, even if I've never played it.

This is basically roll-your-own twilight, right? It kind of sounds like that but its hidden under layers of trying to be mindful of teen angst or whatever that seems counter to that pitch.

It can be, yes, but it can also be roll-your-own Buffy or Teen Wolf or even Mystery Men, depending on how seriously you take it. The one long game I ran ended up being more like a much more personal version of The Strain, for example.

Here's a project I've been working on for the past two years (did most of the art for it). It's called Cryptic Explorers, and it's an assymetric sci-fi/horror game. It's also very metal. You either play as a group of explorers trying to steal occult knowledge from the Realm of Death and escape, or play as ancient occult gods trying to kill the explorers. We tried launching this last year, but we had to do some drastic retooling to make it a feasibly produceable product. Y'all should check it out.

Well, when stretch goals were announced for Monsterhearts 2 I started to have... issues with the project. Fortunately, these have now been at least partially addressed. We'll see what happens next. I've pulled pledges before because they involved people I didn't want receiving my money, and I'll do it again if I have to, no matter how much I might like or otherwise support a project or creator, because as long as the industry at large continues to shelter toxic personalities, there will be no progress. If that requires me to just plain stop spending money on the hobby, well, I have enough stuff to game with for my foreseeable lifetime already.

Do not call me that!
Snuffles was my slave name.
You shall now call me Snowball; because my fur is pretty and white.
So I saw this game, Wordsy on Kickstarter and thought it could be interesting but it seems completely bizarre. You draw 8 letter tiles and put them down then you have thirty seconds to try and make the highest-scoring word possible. But the twist is that you can make a word that includes letters that aren't on the table. Here's an example from the project:

Does this seem kind of weird and ridiculous? Like, why even have the letter tiles at all? I could just challenge my friends to think of the longest word possible in thirty seconds and there'd be pretty much the same level of 'gameplay' as this game is offering.

Lemon-Lime
Aug 6, 2009
The letters not on the table don't seem to give you points and it looks like the points value of letters is determined by random draw. The goal therefore appears to be to come up with a word that fits as many high-scoring letters in it as possible, not just any long word.

Most people don't have the entire contents of the dictionary memorised, so the game is going to be about pitting your vocabulary against your friends'.

I'm not sure if this is necessarily the case but in the example it's all vowels missing, and all consonants in the word are on the table - if so that would be a good enough constraint, you can't just keep saying floccinaucinihilipilification.

e: oh, "n" isn't there. Still, you want to choose words with those letters for points. I guess the big flaw would be if there's a word that uses all/most letters in the alphabet, you could say that.

Sure, but if you know even 7 or 8 very long words (that each cover a good chunk of the alphabet), that's going to be a big advantage, and you'll outscore "normal" creative words a fair bit of the time. Like, here's the words with the most different letters in English:

superacknowledgement, pseudolamellibranchiate, pneumoventriculography, phenylthiocarbamides, hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia, formaldehydesulphoxylic, blepharoconjunctivitis

Realistically, you could squint at that board for a while and come up with "backgrounds" or something. Or you could just use "superacknowledgement" again, for about the same score. And when "f, x, h, p, y, m" pops up, you're going to have a really dumb, boring advantage. Anyway, the solution is probably some combination of "you can't repeat words in a game" and "don't play with jerks" or something - but it does seem like a legitimate rut the game could fall into.

it's because of the blog post Mark Diaz Truman did a few months back on his company's website about how people in tabletop communities shouln't tell prominent assholes to gently caress off in the middle of heated google+ arguments or privately complain about how lovely they are because ~something sanctimonious about people should rise above publicly calling out their unapologetic stalkers~

then he posted a rambling non-apology that mostly restated his earlier points when people pointed out that maybe we should be more concerned about who made the discourse that toxic to begin with/how vocal backlash is the only way to accomplish anything online

Diaz's argument was that being angry at/calling out terrible actors on one side or the other was causing a culture rift between the "story games" community and the "OSR" community, despite the fact that a) no such hard divide really exists, a lot of people play both, and b) it completely ignores context like "what these people have actually done". Basically it was a "make peace with your harasser" argument.

There's a certain subset of TG people who use Google+. The way G+ is programmed makes it easy to form insular communities, though I'm not sure if the TG folks specifically sought out G+ for that reason or that was just a happy coincidence.

The way G+ is set up is that it's also very easy to prevent terrible people and harassers into your social media space. Which is a good thing.

Technically, in his second post he said that he didn't expect anyone to get along with their harassers, but then he doubled back and said you shouldn't "wrong" them, which apparently includes being openly meaaaan to them. because it's easier to weep about the death of intellectual discourse than provide actual solutions to problems, you see.

Personally, while I'll never give money to the actual bad people doing awful things, making kinda insensitive blog posts and/or being socially inept and/or holding some actual bad opinions is hardly reason to avoid someone's products or bail on a kickstarter like Monster-freaking-Hearts-2. A kickstarter that doesn't just wear its progressiveness on its sleeve, it made a whole suit out of it.

It feels like the bar has been moved from 'don't buy from actual creeplords' - which is right and good - to 'don't buy from people who don't hate the creeplords enough.'

It's all part of this eating-our-own BS we on the left do way too much.
