It's a cool little homage, makes me wonder what other stuff is hidden into their/other band's music.

New Testament is good, but it hasn't grabbed me like Dark Roots Of The Earth.

I find the production to be a little too clean and sterile. Also, some of the melodic bits are a tad lame, but they were needed as a bit of a contrast to what is a pretty repetitive album.

Definitely still worth listening to though. There's a fair few kickass songs on it.

Well I mean being a full-scale metalhead is definitely a minority interest but it's a fairly accepted one. You do see the occasional dude walking on the street with band T-shirts or denim jackets full of patches but not that many; then again, most fans are like myself and never dress up like that unless we're actually on our way to a concert. Our annual music awards thing has its own category for metal (since 1997) alongside several other genres, the bigger bands sometimes get concerts broadcast on national TV, etc.

I graduated from high school in 1992 which was right when all the "dangerous" crap was going in the Norwegian black metal scene (which I wasn't hugely into at the time anyway, my main poisons at the time were thrash and death metal, then doom) and the major increase in public respectability for metal came a few years after that.

They seem to still be pretty good at what they do, at least as far as playing, not so much writing. They could probably still put something fun together. But these recordings don't even sound like recordings. They'd probably be at least twice as enjoyable without the ridiculous drum overdubs and general sense of "these parts were all recorded separately in each band member's bedroom". Not that I place all the blame at the producer's feet; the band probably want it this way, because Metallica is a big-name band that sells out stadiums and so the record has to be a big production meticulously crafted over a period of 5 years. If people can't hear every single kick drum hit in their Beats AirBuds they'll demand their money back!

Of course, they tried the opposite extreme and we got St. Anger...

A bunch of bands have been hopping over to Victoria before/after Vancouver, but I guess that's just in the summer. We get hosed on a lot of tours and in some spots it's not just as easy as crossing the border to go drive to a show, and there's no cool Canadian metal festival that I know of. Trying to catch a metal show in Saskatchewan must suck balls.

Let us not kid ourselves here, Death Magnetic is probably as good as Metallica will ever be again ie merely decent.
Metallica have had their period of greatness and it is pretty naive thinking they will ever be able to reach their former glory.
Same thing happens to every band, and there are very few bands that manage to produce more than one truly great album in their career.

Didn't expect you guys to be making GBS threads on Atlas, RISE, I actually prefer it to Hard Wired and Moth into Flame. Those 2 sound like more of the same from Death Magnetic which was thoroughly 'eh' to me. But I'm actually digging this new one now that they've slowed it down a bit. Maybe it doesn't sound like they're Trying Too Hard as much? Same thing that happened with the Black Album and other bands like Slayer and Immortal. Maybe I just prefer slow crunchy poo poo I dunno.

I agree it is too long, should have taken the best bits from each guitar solo and mashed it into one, and cut off the extra choruses from the end. Based on these 3 songs at worst it doesn't seem like it will be any worse than Death Magnetic, which for a 35 year old metal band is relatively OK I guess?

cracked up at canna-business.

I guess I can do this now that I've heard the new Testament, and I'm not expecting that many surprises out of the new Metallica based on what's out there, but here's how I rank the big...five...

1.Anthrax-For All Kings
2.Testament-Brotherhood of the Snake
3.Metallica-Hardwired
4.Megadeth-Dystopia
5.Slayer-Repentless (honestly didn't listen to this one and it came out last year)

I haven't kept up with Megadeth since Crypitc Writings. The track Dialetic Chaos off of Endgame is pretty good, reminds me of the intro tracks they used to do back in the Peace Sells/So Far era, but other than that nothing has really grabbed my attention. Reading through their Wiki page it sounds like they've been putting out at least halfway decent material pretty consistently with the odd stinker album here and there. Do any of their post-2000 releases stand out to fans of their 80s/90s stuff?

No. Dystopia was notable for not being terrible, but it still doesn't click like the older stuff and after listening to it once or twice I don't remember any of it and haven't had the desire to try to like it listen to it again.
