I hope no one takes this too personally but if you're still posting about metallica you might want to look into something called "stockholm syndrome"

They were good when I was in high school, so if they're still good now then it's one less thing that has changed since then which means I'm not old yet :colbert:

Actually, now that I think on it, the only 2 albums they actually released during those years are Load and ReLoad, and while I actually like them both they're no Ride/Master era 'tallica. gently caress. It's me. I'm the Old :(

Garage Inc. still justifies all 90s Metallica IMO

I haven't kept up with Megadeth since Crypitc Writings. The track Dialetic Chaos off of Endgame is pretty good, reminds me of the intro tracks they used to do back in the Peace Sells/So Far era, but other than that nothing has really grabbed my attention. Reading through their Wiki page it sounds like they've been putting out at least halfway decent material pretty consistently with the odd stinker album here and there. Do any of their post-2000 releases stand out to fans of their 80s/90s stuff?

the last one had a couple okay moments where they jocked some chaos ad riffs but beyond that it's pretty dire

e: for example the big single of the album before the last one is a ripoff of a bon jovi tune

I'm late to the party and all, but holy gently caress...what the hell happened to Skeletonwitch? Yeah, I know everyone's having a freakout over not-Chance's vocals (deservedly), but musically...wow. Did the entire band just give up or something? Their latest album is...really bad.

I finished my Lugubrum quest and get this: they're very cool up to De vette cuecken, after which they start to use cleaner production which doesn't really suit them and takes away a lot of the power the riffs have(although I think their later riffs aren't as good anyway). The old stuff rules though, let's all become farmers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhMXTGtai8I https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qodkfs5_llU

Megadeth is better than Metallica because they(Dave) still occasionally make some cool music, where as Metallica hasn't made anything good since like 1988.

Also Rust in Peace is better than every Metallica album.

That's my hot take.

Cliff, Nick Menza and Marty Friedman and/or Chris Poland probably would of ended up forming a badass band had Cliff not died.

Didn't expect you guys to be making GBS threads on Atlas, RISE, I actually prefer it to Hard Wired and Moth into Flame. Those 2 sound like more of the same from Death Magnetic which was thoroughly 'eh' to me. But I'm actually digging this new one now that they've slowed it down a bit. Maybe it doesn't sound like they're Trying Too Hard as much? Same thing that happened with the Black Album and other bands like Slayer and Immortal. Maybe I just prefer slow crunchy poo poo I dunno.

I agree it is too long, should have taken the best bits from each guitar solo and mashed it into one, and cut off the extra choruses from the end. Based on these 3 songs at worst it doesn't seem like it will be any worse than Death Magnetic, which for a 35 year old metal band is relatively OK I guess?

Moth into Flame was actually kinda good.
Metallica trying to sound hard as gently caress is kinda bad, cause there are bands that do that much better and it is also not the reason why Metallica is the band it is.
If Metallica had kept on doing records like Kill Em All, they would be just another Bay Area band like Exodus or Death Angel and wouldn't be known outside of thrash metal fans.
But they went away from thrash on Ride and then just kept on doing new stuff. Some good and some bad records. Death Magnetic was kinda good, better than St Anger, Load (Ronnie anyone?) and Reload.
It is pretty obvious they are still trying to stay new and hungry despite being a really old band. So far they havent' gone the Iron Maiden way and become a cover band of their own greatest songs (which imo would be great).
Regardless, I'll buy the new record cause I have the rest (in my world Lulu doesn't exist).

I dunno man, this song just doesn't sound the same when it's not playing from an ancient worn out C tape.
Yes, I still used C tapes at the time, shut up. I couldn't afford all the CDs so I borrowed them from my friends and copied them on old C tapes. That harpsichord sounds better when it's wobbly as hell, I'm telling you

Ahh yes, Luis Royo album covers, the true hallmark of old generic europower. He was the Felipe Machado Franco of the 90s, except some his art is actually pretty cool. Though I'm pretty sure a lot of times the bands would just use some random Royo painting for their cover instead of actually having him do it specifically.

Fun song though.

I really dig Load - its a great album.

I have maintained for some time now that if Load had been made by a debuting band without the preconceived notions that come with Metallica's prior catalogue, people would have been pretty easy on it and it might be considered a minor classic, especially if you took the bad stuff off of Load and added the good stuff from Re-Load (which, admittedly is a small number, but there is some stuff I like on there). That sounds like a big What-If, until you realise that Load was supposed to be a double album originally. Until It Sleeps feels like the last time James had anything of consequence to say. As somebody who watched a parent die slowly of cancer, I empathise with that song strongly (it's one of at least a couple songs he wrote about his Mom's fight with cancer, the other for certain is The God That Failed, which is also a good song).

I didn't care for Death Magnetic, haven't bothered with Hardwired (and probably won't), and St.Anger is one of the rare times in my life I bought a record, disliked it virulently, and didn't at least try to pawn it off for a couple bucks afterwards, just threw it out. Also the last Metallica record I bought. Old habits die hard I guess, I used to LOVE Metallica when I was in High School (which was at the peak of the Napster debacle, which was no fun). Now I maybe listen to older stuff once or twice a year, and put it away again until I feel the itch. I have friends who like going to Minneapolis 6 hours away, and if they invited me to see Metallica, I'm not sure I'd be in. Especially since their shows are REALLY pricy.

Vader tapes tend to grow on me over time but I'm giving "The Empire" a solid SICK/10 off the jump anyways. As usual It feels like a change in sound from the previous album while still retaining that distinct Vader feel.

Help mates I'm itching for some bands that fit in the pile of Queens of the Stone Age, Motorhead, Uncle Acid, Windhand etc stuff I've been real into as of late. Driving rhythm guitars, lots of personality all around, interesting not totally harsh vocals. Bands that utilize sonic space properly would be 10/10. I've hit my limit with super compressed high gain metal this month I want some raw sounding jams.
