Alter Ego posted:Part of me feels like this hypothesis is the left-wing equivalent of the "SILENT MAJORITY FOR TRUMP" theory, but given that women are making up a bigger part of the electorate this year and the enormous gender gap, I feel like there might be some truth to it. Totally anecdotal but my Ohioan super evangelical future mother-in-law is voting McMuffin because she cannot stand by Trump's rhetoric. Had an argument with future father-in-law about it. She has a master's degree so she doesn't quite fit the demo of the typical evangelical but I doubt she's alone in that sentiment. Maybe the difference is that she's actually willing to tell her husband that she isn't voting Trump. We'll see.

Regarding gerrymandering, I had read something once saying that it will eventually work against Republicans in the future because of changing demographics. Is there any truth to that?

My Dear Lexus, It has been a long time since I had an opportunity of writing to you, and I gladly avail myself of the present opportunity. I am not certain that I will have a chance of sending this but I will write a few lines any how and try and get it off to let you know that I am among the living. We will remain in this vicinity, I expect for some time to recruit our horses. Our horses are sadly worsted. We found plenty to eat and to feed our horses on in Mo but hardly even had time to feed or eat as we traveled almost insesantly night and day. We could get any amount of bacon of the very best kind at 10 cts and every thing else in proportion. As ever your devoted and loving Husband, J.C. Mavrick.

Rynn posted:Regarding gerrymandering, I had read something once saying that it will eventually work against Republicans in the future because of changing demographics. Is there any truth to that? It makes them vulnerable to waves. Huge turnout in cities that are gerrymandered into 5 Republican districts could cause havoc top to bottom as suddenly +5 R becomes +1 D, meaning you lose all 5 whereas in a nongerrymandered situation you lose one or two tops It's still always better to gerrymander yourself as many seats as possible as soon as you possibly can because a legislative supermajority can be used to prevent wave elections

Christie was elected because of Corzine (which is why I'm hesitant to say Christie has destroyed the GOP here for a generation, look at the poo poo Corzine pulled), and was reelected because he struck a deal with the democrats. They put up a token candidate and didn't support her at all in exchange for getting most of their legislative priorities through Christie. D's are already campaigning for governor now. They'll win.

Rynn posted:Regarding gerrymandering, I had read something once saying that it will eventually work against Republicans in the future because of changing demographics. Is there any truth to that? Not really, since although demographics aren't set in stone, neither are district maps. As long as they can keep ahead of the changes, they can keep their advantage.

The strategy requires them to craft R districts with a safe, but small margin and create fewer deeeeep D districts. As demos change (and Rs shed moderates) those safe R districts may become less safe and more competitive. This is academic because this still isn't as good for D's as proper districting, and while Rs are in power they can continue to shuffle district lines to minimize that shift for longer.

Rynn posted:Regarding gerrymandering, I had read something once saying that it will eventually work against Republicans in the future because of changing demographics. Is there any truth to that? The general idea behind gerrymandering is to concentrate the opposition votes in as small an area as possible while having narrower wins elsewhere. E.g you lose a district 10-90 but win a bunch 55-45. Depending on how demographics change it's much most likely to flip the close wins into losses.
