What gets me is why the lights turn red for that truck and the warning sign comes on.... and then go green again. Is that not a design flaw in the warning system? Shouldn't they wait for there to not be an overheight truck heading towards the bridge to go green again?

Does that set of lights not just prohibit things from moving under the bridge or am I misunderstanding something about how the intersection works? (I'm in the UK and I don't have experience of US intersections)

That's what I said when I first saw that video. You see a sign saying "overheight must turn right" and it can be taken as "if you're overheight, then you must turn right, but you're okay because the lights changed to green!"

The funny thing is that this guy continues to be employed by my (ex) company. Allowing that to happen just completely redefines stupid and inept management. And they continue to bitch about low profit margins, and bad driver retention, like it's not their fault. HTF does that even happen if it can't be attributed to some form of corporate brain damage? I have a hard time believing they haven't tried the cheaper solution of lowering the road under the bridge by about 4-inches or so in the last ten or more years. I'm kind of surprised the city isn't sued by not providing a proper height truck route through downtown. From the height of the curb in this area, it seems like they've progressively laid asphalt on top of asphalt without milling the old pavement away and thus created a more hazardous underpass than likely existed originally.

Full-size trucks seem to love to get into the least convenient, most dangerous places they possibly can. They're constantly wedging themselves through the tiny narrow back roads in my town, semis knocking down power lines is a nearly monthly occurrence.

Hey dipshit, maybe try reading. In both this thread, and in the links provided in this thread, it says that the road CANNOT be lowered as major pipelines run under the road there.

Trains are federally regulated and because of the ridiculous amount of right of ways they needed to first implant themselves, they have a regulatory environment that is ridiculously favourable to the railways.

Long story short, if you build an overpass over a railway that isn't high enough for trains, that overpass is going to come down and you're going to pay for it coming down.

I didn't see anyone say what's wrong with the water stop sign though. I think I'd have a hard time missing it no matter how distracted I was, but my guess is that it probably costs a bunch and still doesn't help because people are just too stupid and the only real solution is natural selection? To be fair, I'm not sure what I'd do if a massive stop sign suddenly materialized in front of me, though. I think it might freak me out a bit. On the other hand, if I was a truck driver with 30 years of experience I'd probably not even blink an eye :v:

The 11'8 bridge is actually problematic for that, because trucks still need access to the side road immediately in front of it. You don't know for sure an approaching truck is going to be an idiot and try and drive under the bridge, so you have to do non-disruptive stuff like a stonking great TRUCKS MUST TURN sign that flashes when a truck is approaching.

Additionaly I suspect the water signs wouldn't be as visible as in the video, since the bridge doesn't have a entire tunnel to make a nice dark background.

Also:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...rth-damage.html

quote:

Sydney truck drivers continue to be ‘stupid cowboys’ by getting stuck in the city’s tunnels, despite more warning signs being put in place and an increase in penalties and fines.

In 2015 there were 25 incidents where oversized trucks tried to squeeze themselves through the Harbour tunnel, the M5 and the Airport tunnel.

This year there has already been five trucks stuck in tunnels, leading to traffic chaos throughout the city, the Herald Sun reported.

New South Wales Roads Minister Duncan Gay blames the cowboys in the industry who continue to ignore changes including alerts, warning lights, infra-red height detectors and layby areas for trucks to pull over before entering tunnels safely.

‘Not to mention introducing hefty fines and penalties, yet there are still stupid cowboys that give it a crack.’
