I thought it developed from "rice burner" as a derogatory term for Japanese cars, as the most common cars for people to make stupid :rice: pseudo-performance modifications to were always those. Then the backronym came later.

They're coming next Tuesday to "fix" mine, whatever that entails. I have a feeling it's deactivating certain spin cycles based on the load size.

Previously they've repaired it for the pump breaking loose and dumping all of the water on the floor. Samsung washers - terrible washing machine stuff

The term dates back to the 1960s, when the first Japanese import motorcycles started appearing in the US market. People called them "rice-burners," joking that the tiny Japanese engines ran on rice alcohol. The term spread to the first Japanese import cars, then to the powerful bikes that ate Harley-Davidson's lunch ("rice rockets"), and eventually "rice" and "ricer" became the slang they are today.

"race inspired cosmetic enhancements" sounds so ridiculously stupid i think it in itself is meant to be derogatory as well

Well, yes, of course it is.

Modifying a car to look good or go fast is fine. Ricing is when you modify a car to look fast, and that's silly.

The core of the problem, I figure, was slapping an S15 turbo on the engine and then loving up the tune if it blew out in less than 20 miles.

There we go, wikipedia even backs that up with issues of The Motor Cycle from 1966. Never think corporate marketing speak when there's always good, old fashioned racism in play.

In Terrible Car Stuff I wish I could have photographed; while going through an intersection in Wicker Park, I saw the only E21 BaurCab I've ever seen in my life. It was covered in grey and red matte paint, had a large spoiler, an ugly body kit, and ridiculous rims with thin tires that barely fit under its poorly flared wheel wells. That poor, poor BMW didn't deserve the StancedLyfe, but the StancedLyfe chose it

The E21 is a treasure and the only mods allowed should be BMW racing livery and maybe a very well done M42 swap

From the grandaddy of ricing cars (circa 1997):

http://www.riceboypage.com/ YES IT IS STILL UP

quote:

Appearance vs. Performance

What sets apart Rice-Boys from normal performance enthusiasts is that they are more concerned with the image of speed than they are about actual performace (sic). Few Rice Rockets add the one option that can make a Civic begin to go fast -- a turbochager.

Take for example, the above pictured Civic. It looks pretty mean and fast with its rims and super-spoiler (another staple of Rice-Boy technology), but closer inspection will reveal that this is a Civic DX. The mirrors and liscence (sic) plate frames are FLAT BLACK, whereas LX and EX models are painted and would be shiny. A noble attempt at fooling people (as black plastic would stand out more on a red or white car as opposed to a black car), but the outside appearance doesn't change what is under the hood -- a Civic DX economy car engine.

It's not so much that Rice-Boy is trying to make his car look good. There are lots of people out there who just want to make their car look good, and don't care about speed at all. Rice-Boy, however, says that he is making his modifications to enhance his car's performance, when really, all he cares about is fitting some sort of image. For example, he may lower his car, saying that it is for a lower center of gravity, and thus, better handling, but if he doesn't do a good job of it (i.e., his car is bouncing around from his shocks being able to handle the higher spring rates... or he cuts his springs making his car uneven) then we know that really, he cares more about looking low then he does about better cornering.

I wonder how many other cars he's gouged by ramming those side pipe things in to them when he opens the doors.

Also, tool boxes on each end of the bed.
Any bets on whether that air box on the hood is connected to anything?
