is there any significance to that scene beyond just literally tearing her own arms off and looking cool?

There's some pretty ham-fisted symbolism in shooting up the tree of human evolution and the fossils right beforehand

there's the plot reasons that were already mentioned of trying to get there before the section 6 dudes arrived but yeah theres more to it than just that. for one think about what you felt watching the scene when her limbs are breaking and her muscles and flesh are all bulging and distorted. prolly felt kind of disgusted, or a little uneasy or creeped out? yet they're just robot parts aren't they? one reason for the scene is to show how you the viewer still worry about and empathize with the character even though shes just a robot body. its hard to watch that scene and it appears very "gory" and visceral even though theres no literal gore there because they're robot parts, yet we still feel the same kind of emotional response as if we we were watching it happen to a human body. its to kind of drive home the point that she is a human and that her being in a robot body doesnt change that.

the other reason is that she's pushing herself beyond her limits and she knows it. this kind of drives home the point that the major mentions earlier in the film, something along the lines of "if man dreams of something then he achieves it" (paraphrasing cause I haven't seen it in years). basically showing that even with as complex and advanced as her body is she will, first, continue to push herself to the limits of her abilities just like mankind generally, and second, that her body even as advanced as it is, is still not capable of harnessing the spirit and drive of the human mind or soul or ghost.

the whole movie is centered around the major being in an existential crisis about whether she's human or not and the final scene kind of answers that for the viewer at least and helps us see that yeah, she is human.

In the ending scene of The Ghost in the Shell movie, she merges with the AI at the end. She basically became a machine god at the end of the movie.

There's even a talk how shes not the major or the puppetmaster during the ending also.

The first movie posted:

Puppet Master: I refer to myself as an intelligent life form because I am sentient and I am able to recognize my own existence, but in my present state I am still incomplete. I lack the most basic processes inherent in all living organisms: reproducing and dying.
Major Motoko Kusanagi: But you can copy yourself.
Puppet Master: A copy is just an identical image. There is the possibility that a single virus could destroy an entire set of systems and copies do not give rise to variety and originality. Life perpetuates itself through diversity and this includes the ability to sacrifice itself when necessary. Cells repeat the process of degeneration and regeneration until one day they die, obliterating an entire set of memory and information. Only genes remain. Why continually repeat this cycle? Simply to survive by avoiding the weaknesses of an unchanging system.

As I recall, the Major was in a rush because of her personal motivation to dive into the Puppetmaster in hopes of finding some answers to her existential crisis, something that would be impossible if Section 6 intercepted her, but also wouldn't be allowed once the body was delivered to Section 9 (Cause it's a bit insane).

As it turned out, Batou was willing to assist her with her crazy plan after all. But they still wouldn't have had time to complete the dive if the Puppetmaster had not inhibited the snipers, something they didn't expect it to be capable of.

As for the imagery of the Major being destroyed, I always thought it was a more a visual representation of her leaving traditional notions of humanity and pushing questions on the nature of Being and consciousness even further leading up to her merge. It's appropriately unnerving visually, given that the philosophy territory is unnerving. The ending is taking the film's pondering on the nature of identity a step further, rather than giving a pat answer to "is she human," which the film was never about.

There's a bunch of new info about this movie out today, including that the plot will involve Kuze, aka the charismatic refugee leader with ties to the Major's past from SAC: 2nd Gig. Apparently they didn't want to do the Puppetmaster story because they felt they didn't have enough time to do it justice unlike the 80-minute animated movie, but will instead do the storyline of a character that had a season-long story arc. :downs:

No, just the official trailer. There's a special launch party/event for the trailer reveal next week. Funny story: Paramount wanted to send me to that event in Tokyo because of the fan edit trailer I made, but I had to turn down their offer due to work and other prior obligations. The thing that gets me about that backdrop is that it's way too active and distracting. It would look better at night, but pulling all that Blade Runner poo poo during the day is going to look horrible. Curaon might have pulled it off in Children Of Men, but there's no reason why that background should be lit up like that. It makes no sense from a visual composition or a mise en scene point, it looks like someone showing off.

BTW, if anyone is interested, here's the original scene from the movie...

Her suit doesn't look at all fleshy, at least in that lighting. And I dislike the use of Predator shimmer during the fight sequence. In the the original it looks like the bad guy is tearing himself apart, to reflect his shattered consciousness.

If it had been a textured bodysuit like what's used in most newer superhero movies, that would have been fine. Or if she had a mannequin body with some clear mechanical elements, that would have been fine. But that just looks like a cheap spandex Halloween costume. Coupled with the really obvious bluescreen, this is some real fan film looking poo poo.
