Deadulus posted:Looks like the GOP is thinking about making Medicaid block granted. That will be the death of medicaid right? Already confirmed that a bill to block grant Medicaid will be coming up in the first 100 days. Currently Medicaid pays based on the number of people that qualify for it and pays for services that are determined by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid. Block granting it would just give the states a chunk of money and let them decide what to cover. If lots more people need Medicaid in a given year, then the state has to either reduce benefits, raise eligibility thresholds to kick people off, or raise state taxes because they only get a fixed amount and not a per-patient amount.

Also, Trump's YUGE tax cut for "All Americans" doesn't count if you are a single parent, disabled, or if you are at a low enough income level to pay federal income taxes, but only in the lowest 10% bracket (which actually goes UP to 12% under Trump's tax cut plan:quote:NYU Law’s Lily Batchelder conservatively estimates that 25 million individuals and 15 million children would see their taxes go up under Trump’s plan. That's about 20 percent of households with minor children at home, and includes more than half of all single parents. The combination of an increased bottom rate, Trump's total elimination of personal exemptions for taxpayers and dependents, and his abolishing of "head of household" filing status, often used by single parents or single caretakers, leaves many people in the middle class worse off.

So is there a way to continually point out that Hillary won the popular vote without sounding like a gigantic baby? I'm wondering about the women's vote. I'm shocked that white women went for Trump as hard as they did. In 2012, there was a lot of talk about Obama winning single women and Romney winning married women. Are there statistics demonstrating a a similar trend with Clinton or Trump?

Even states with the healthiest populations and most generous policies can't control when there are huge influxes of new beneficiaries, like in 2008. They will all have a fixed budget. Additionally, block granting means that additional Medicaid spending has to be approved in the budget every single year. Currently they just pay for whoever qualifies. It is designed to slowly wither the program away. It also gives lovely states total freedom to be lovely, but even states that WANT to do right won't be able to.

Schizotek posted:Which valid concerns are these? If you're talking poo poo like BLM or muslims, then there's a huge problem with legitimizing those beliefs. Ignore the validity of them for a second. It's jobs, dummy. You know that whole Sanders narrative of "The elites are loving you over and you are being abandoned?" Trump took that and ran with it; Hillary satisfied herself with lecturing the Deplorables as Deplorables and attempted to move around them to try and (arrogantly) win the Presidency while literally abandoning/mocking/villifying a significant percentage of the overall population and playing into the Establishment side of the Establishment/Anti-Establishment divide that this election turned out to be focused on as its zeitgeist. Engaging does not mean Triangularization or Third Wayism. It means approaching these people as human beings instead of as caricatures. Basically learn how to be able to sit and have a conversation with a repellent human being instead of dismissing them or ending up looking like a massive hypocrite in doing the whole "We go high, they go low" then immediately turning to straight-up attack them. Like, yeah, they're terrible, Deplorable human beings, but attacking them while you're running a campaign is a terrible idea. That line only rings hollow at best and antagonizes them at worst, driving them to the polls with genuine enthusiasm versus the forced enthusiasm in the BernieBros-for-Hillary camp. Save all that for after you secure the Presidency first if you have to. Don't count your chickens before they hatch, etc. When it's election season, loving unite first and shut down any squabbling as a ironclad alliance because of what's on the line, then indulge in squabbling after you win the country (ie the Eternal Leftist Dilemma). Does any of that make sense? Teriyaki Koinku fucked around with this message at 02:24 on Nov 10, 2016 |
