I had something wonderful happen today. In my office building we have three elevators, one for odd floors, one for even floors and one that stops at every floor, all three are synced so if you can't call the even or odd elevator it's either all or none. I was going back to my office after lunch in the odd numbered elevator, it stopped at 11th floor, and two young women got on then they got off at the 13th floor and took the stairs down to the 12th floor.

there was an awesome street fight today and i got some pictures. was really intense, a young guy wearing a puffy jacket started beating an old guy with his own hat. he also took some papers off the ground and shoved them in the old guy's mouth. by the end of it there were probably like 60 people watching, it was great. i'll try to post the pics in the next few days. a policeman showed up in the middle of it and was like "did you guys call me?" and the guy beating the old guy was like "no" and he said "what are you doing with that old man?" and the young guy said "he tried to cheat me with a fake ticket" and the police officer was like "oh ok" and just walked away and the young guy continued beating the elderly man lmao

Indians and Cihnese with black money are generally no exception, but the difference between Indians and Chinese is that it's easier for the Chinese to buy property abroad and transfer huge amounts of uncounted-for money for that purpose than it is for Indians (Even though Xi is trying to crack down on it). Unfortunately for the Western world, then we get a glut of tuhao and people with stolen money crowding places and forcing locals out. Haier fucked around with this message at 09:35 on Nov 10, 2016 |

Chinese people also don't seem to understand that the big flashing up arrow above the door to the elevator means it is going up so nearly every time I'm in the elevator someone will barge their way into it and then freak out because it isn't going in the direction they wanted. Bowling through crowds of idiot children who try and get in as soon as the door opens is good stress relief though.

Bowling through crowds of idiot children who try and get in as soon as the door opens is good stress relief though. Many of them don't control the kids at all, even if the kid is doing something bad like hitting other kids and making them upset. There's this one poo poo I used to see every day with his grandpa and the kid would kick and punch other kids who are big enough to go alone. He'll pull on their backpacks as they are getting off, or hit all the buttons so the elevator stops at every floor. They'd get angry and then he'd run back to gramps, who would say nothing and do nothing. One day he was running full speed through some of those plastic air conditioner doors, coming right at me while I was about to walk through them. I had enough time to either accept this kid at mach one into my crotch, or defend myself. I turned sideways and hip-checked him right into a wall. He bounced much farther and harder than I thought. He was on the ground, staring at me all googly eyed and the grandpa just stood there saying nothing, and then I smiled at him and he got up and left. There are a lot of people that don't understand the up/down arrows, but the thing that gets me is the crazed "door close" button mashing. I have yet to be in an elevator in China where this isn't the case. They mash the gently caress out of that button, and I can see it's broken in all but one of the elevators. It saves them about one full second of time if it actually works, but it usually never does. They mash it even while the doors are closing. Whenever I get on I never touch it, and there's someone else in there they sigh very loudly and go to pound on it while the doors are already closing. It's the same as that nervous "OMG OMG OMG OMG" that people in the supermarket line get when you're not shoulder-to-shoulder with the person in front of you, shoving all their stuff out of the way to make room for yours. People get so on edge when you don't press that loving button that the whole vibe of the elevator changes immediately. They're losing precious single-digit seconds of their life and its all your fault, even though they're facedown in their phones regardless of where they are going or what they are doing. I will always gladly let them have their panic attack of the day. One more elevator gripe: I have found that many, many men with a friend or partner like to use it as a time to complain about foreigners. I know it's on purpose and it's dumb as hell, but it always, always begins the exact same way: *Overly gesticulates looking the foreigner up and down* *Big, loud inhalation through the teeth, followed by teeth sucking, followed by tsk-tsking* *Another deep breath and more teeth sucking* "WAIGUOREN blah blah ZHONGGUOREN blah blah *teeth sucking or tsking* WAIGUOREN blah blah ZHONGGUA blah blah MEIGUO blah *teeth sucking or tsking* WAIGUOREN blah ZHONGGUOREN" The "blah blahs" are always something comparing how Chinese are better at this or that, or they can't understand why we are known for this or that. I've been with friends or my boss when this happens, the guys not knowing we're together, and then someone will tell them to shut up and they get all face-lossed and quiet. The other variation, when they think they are truly safe: *Overly gesticulates looking the foreigner up and down* *Big, loud inhalation through the teeth, followed by teeth sucking, followed by tsk-tsking* *Another deep breath and more teeth sucking* *Laughes* *Moves away quickly and goes back to play phone* Whenever I hear teeth sucking now I immediately know some whining is going to follow.

Every day at noon, and then again at two and also four PM is insane pandemonium of kids and lovely grandparents clogging every hallway and elevator. The old people are worse than the kids, because they bum rush the elevator door as soon as it's open before anyone can exit, like it's going to leave without them. Ahhh Elevator gripes, I'm getting so very used to those. And trains too! I may not be in China but I live in a building and state where most people weren't born in a country that has those and nobody knows how to use elevators/trains. A: I'm 6'4", and wide B: I'm exiting the elevator or train with a bike C: My 6'4" body is exiting this elevator or train pushing a bike and YOU ARE NOT GETTING ON THIS ELEVATOR OR TRAIN UNTIL I EXIT It shouldn't be very difficult for people to understand but I will run you down if try to walk onto the elevator the moment it opens instead of waiting to see if somebody is getting off. I run into strollers or shopping carts or children trying to bolt onto the elevator on a regular basis. We've got a dog and it requires a specific command to even get on the elevator, just to make sure everybody is off the elevator before we instruct the dog to get on. If a dog can learn such standard interactions it shouldn't be difficult for people to learn them.

MisterOblivious posted:Can you give us, like, the scale? 1 Lakh = 100 thousand rupees ($1502 USD right now) 1 Crore = 100 lakhs, or 10 million rupees ($150,289 USD) It's an old system of counting they use from Sanskrit and some old Vedic texts, numbers going down to the atomic level for an unknown reason, which means VIMANAS, BABY. They don't call them Millionaires there, they call them Crorepatis. In Slumdog Millionaire, it was "Who wants to be a Crorepati." Everything is counted in lakhs and crores and it can get very confusing to a non-Indian when you're trying to covert it in your head when they start saying like "10 crore 35 lakh." Anyway, farmers: http://www.thehindu.com/data/does-it-pay-to-be-a-farmer-in-india/article6713980.ece Says they make over Rs. 6k per month for a farming household (like 5 people in a hut), but the expenses dissolve quickly and I feel that 6k is kind of generous for many of those farmers. The problem is that predatory lending is standard there, and much like US farmers, a lot of people are forever in debt due to buying very expensive machines, etc. Look at the graphs on the link, some of those farmer households are at 93% debt. They lose money like anything and I have read that some farmers without children (or those who died, etc.) were committing suicide over small sums like 3k rupees and the harrassment the lenders were giving. A common thing is that developers or land-grabbers will go in and offer these people like 1/6th or 1/3rd what the land is worth in immediate black cash in exchange for the title. Many of the farmers will sell and then go buy dumb poo poo and blow through it all in a year and then have to go back and work as farmhands for other people or even on their old lands. My friend had a couple dozen cows and was very into the scene of how these farmers would screw themselves over, or be screwed over by others. It cost him around 2k per month to feed his cows, and he could make about 6k per month selling the milk (I was a big customer, buying about 1k per month at 30 rupees per liter). He was doing fine because it was just a hobby and he had other money coming in and he was a devout Shiavite Hindu and loved cows, but for trying to take care of a family and pay for education and other costs, it would be pretty rough if you had to divide 4k per month between multiple people and pay back a predatory loan. Someone on reddit r/india did the math and figured out that something like a crore in notes stacked up takes about as much space as a public toilet stall. Many of the black money dealers have multiple properties and it's not hard to think they have cash stacked in locked rooms in all of them. Buying many big purchases in India are usually done with black money, or partially through black money. Even buying a home appliance can be done this way if you don't get a warranty on it, meaning there is no receipt or proof of purchase. The society has been built on this and it needs a change. Tax is generally included in the price, but many times people will sell at regular price and then just keep the tax portion of it and pretend the sale never happened. There's a million ways to earn black money in India and not get caught, so this whole initiative is a huge deal. I was telling one of my friends on the phone about it the other day and she was laughing the entire time because she immediately thought of all these people she knew there that are getting screwed hard right now. Edit: Politicians can win tons of votes by going into farmer and poor areas and passing out 50s and 100s notes in black money a few times. They lose nothing and will gain so much more if they get elected. It's so god drat corrupt, it's almost comical sometimes. I have friends who are part of local government in tier 2 and 3 cities of millions of people and I've been sitting there where they are greeted and someone plops down a stack of cash or drops it into their pockets like it was nothing. I went with one to a dinner and under our plates was money. I have a friend that worked in Bollywood for 30 years and some of the poo poo he told me about how corrupt it is (and the starlets) is mind-boggling, but almost no different from these same politics and industries in first-world countries.
