I do wonder what lesson Labor will take out of this. Whether they will go "maybe we should stop cosying up to big business and betraying our base" or "needs more racism" hahahah oh wait I don't wonder.

Starshark posted:According to this exit poll, the under 50k earners (those you would call 'poor') favoured Clinton. If it was about the economy, you'd see them vote Trump. And it's not just race, it's misogyny as well. Clinton had to fight with one hand behind her back because if she showed too much emotion she was a bitch. Clinton polled 51% and 53% in the bottom two income brackets, whereas Obama II polled 57% and 63%. So maybe the economy had something to do with it.

Pocket Billiards posted:I'm sure I read that a 45% import tariffs for goods from China is a Trump policy? That's a big loving deal I don't hear many people talking about. There's any number of east asian countries (including us) that could play middle-man to help avoid tariffs for China, Australia may be better off if there's more demand for china->australian exports (and vice versa if China imposes tariffs on the US)?.

My hot take is that in the Midwest Trump kept a lot of Romney votes (or poached enough former Obama voters), while Clinton's turnout dropped dramatically. Look at Wisconsin; Trump is going to win it with the same number of votes Romney got (and the latter lost it convincingly). Tokamak posted:Clinton polled 51% and 53% in the bottom two income brackets, whereas Obama II polled 57% and 63%. So maybe the economy had something to do with it. I'm going to guess that Clinton lost the rural poor vote while keeping urban poor.

I just feel bad for Flyover Country, USA's plea to be heard. They aren't going to be helped, they were never going to be helped, but it was savvy enough of Trump to know these people could easily be taken advantage of. It's an enormous shame that it turned out a crab-bucket election, neo-nazis notwithstanding. That's my takeaway from this at least.
