quote:But in general, Bill Clinton’s viewpoint of fighting for the working class white voters was often dismissed with a hand wave by senior members of the team as a personal vendetta to win back the voters who elected him, from a talented but aging politician who simply refused to accept the new Democratic map. As a last dying gasp of the neoliberal wing he's pretty much perfect - all of Hillary's love of capital, but with something resembling charisma. My brother had no idea he was neoliberal until today. Booker is really good at hiding it from a lot of Democrats.

They made a lot of Democrats up for reelection (aside from Hillary) carry Obama's jock and speak of the economic recovery that is his legacy, when the trouble is the people in those districts haven't seen any improvement of their living condition. Hint: this is why a lot of people voted for Trump.

The New Deal was a called exactly that because it was a 'deal' between militant unions, the massive communist and socialist parties who helped organize them and the rich. FDR wouldn't have had the political capital to do any of it without extreme left agitation. Yet liberals take credit for the New Deal like it wasn't fought over.

Oh Snapple! posted:Holy poo poo I can't get enough of this line. In fairness, it's easy to misinterpret what Clinton means. Clinton won a lot of states like Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia that are basically never going to vote Democratic, or at least not until the two parties change beyond recognition again. Meanwhile, he never won NC or VA and only barely won CO in 1992 while losing it in 1996, and those states are all hailed as the future of the Democratic Party (NC maybe not so much, now). I could see the case that Clinton could be called out of touch with the new Democratic Party...but he was absolutely right that the Upper Midwest cannot be won without a strong appeal to very disaffected voters whom his wife ignored.

FDR came from moneyed stock in New York, and he genuinely went back home and spoke to the wealthy oligarchs that were running the country and said, "Your best course right now is to make major economic concessions and give a great deal of your income to the people at the bottom because the CIO(Congress of Industrial Organizations), the socialists, and the communists want to take all of your money." And then limousine liberals act like it was benevolently given as charity.

I guess if there's a beautiful symbol from this campaign, I'd point to a hilarious moment from Clinton's campaign. At one point she had a Facebook post saying something to the effect of, "Share this to be entered into a drawing where the winner gets to see Hamilton on Broadway with Hillary." An extravagant broadway play about Alexander Hamilton, a man who hated the "Great beast of the masses" and favored a system resembling monarchy over representative government. Watch that play alongside a member of the country's most influential political dynasty.

When your two biggest surrogates (Bill, Obama) are people that have pushed politics that have made capital flight easier and have led to people lose manufacturing jobs and your message consists of, "We need to build on the economics that these two progressives have done," good luck rallying people to vote for you.
