What can Democrats offer rural Americans in towns where the only factory closed down 10 years ago? Stop loving talking about nebulous job retraining and college programs for one. Put some god drat jobs back in these towns. Build a government plant that assembles windmills with the goal of covering the county with windmills over the next 20 years. Build a government research lab, or maybe a government clinic that offers free healthcare to the county. Hire people from the local state colleges to be the researchers or doctors, and give all the procurement, HR, security, janitorial, accounting, and other support jobs to local people.

I came up with that in like 2 minutes. Take literally any liberal priority and build *something* in these areas that supports those priorities. Right now these people see that the Democratic Party has turned their backs on them. We waver between ignoring them and sneering at them. So they look at the GOP who says "Dunno how to fix that, but I swear those idiots caused it and I promise to punch 'em in the nose for ya!" These voters pick revenge because their poo poo already fell apart and it's either revenge or nothing at all. We can easily offer a better path forward for them.

And I know people are saying "but but but if this subsection of our base turned out we'd have won!" Who gives a poo poo? We can offer those solutions completely within the realm of things we currently want to do. Why the gently caress wouldn't we want to do that?

Agreed. I bet we could get a lot of people a lot of jobs laying fiber nationwide to every city of at least 5,000 people; for reference that's 4,566 cities in the U.S.; if you want to go further, make that part of a locally run utility: municipal internet access. Now you've got an excuse to maintain a staff that can go out to do home and business installs, do repairs, handle calls; they could even branch out into hosting servers locally.

This is poo poo people could be running on to move our country into the future technologically while also creating jobs that don't suck absolute rear end and making communities better.

Dude factory work is not kind to your body. It's not degrading to say we shouldn't be forcing people to ruin their health. I'm sure this is a delicate topic for you, and it's one of the places where these things get tricky and where words like privilege start to matter, because I've never been scared to talk to the most rural of the rural cause I'm a white dude with a big beard and a nice car, but I don't think that everyone out in the sticks hates you personally.

I talked with a Trump voter today about this, in our local community college there's actually a lot of women in hijabs and abayas. I expressed my worry that Trump's election could signal to them that they're not wanted here, that they aren't really a part of America. She was horrified at the prospect that her vote signaled that, she never wanted to send that signal and wouldn't have ever wanted to indicate that she didn't think those people, some of whom she's classmates with, belong here.

How did she not think Trump's election wouldn't signal this? I donno, but I think it's for the same reason a lot of us were blindsided by how seriously people took the populist part of Trump's campaign. We weren't listening for it. Deporting all muslims? She didn't take that seriously, and didn't think that anyone else did. Just like we didn't think anyone took Trump's pledge to bring back manufacturing seriously.

I honestly don't believe that everyone out in the boonies is as hateful as we fear. I honestly don't think the world is as hateful as we fear it is. Rural people are people just like everyone else. They laugh and love and make mistakes and make wrong assumptions. They get caught up in fear and hate and disappointment just like everyone does. They're lonely and ashamed and angry and just want the world to be a place they're happy with.

Again, I've never had to be afraid. So I know this sounds like I'm talking out my rear end at you. But I genuinely believe that rural whites even in the middle of goddamn nowhere don't actually hate you as much as you might think. They, after all, are just people. No one is a monster. We're just all human beings.

I see where you are coming from and I really want to agree with you.

But when people say, hang black mannequins from their trees on Halloween while simultaneously supporting Trump, that paints a certain picture for me.

I am willing to believe though, that good people out there made a mistake simply because they did not take Trump seriously on half of what he said but liked the other half where it seemed he was speaking directly to them.

This is something that is possible and even likely to me. How else did part of Obama's coalition vote for Trump?
