I'm not sure that "because companies can get away with what is effectively slave labor so why would they pay you a fair wage" is going to be a much more satisfying answer, but it's probably the start of one. (I'm definitely not sure that my gut reaction of BECAUSE NATIONAL BORDERS ARE BULLSHIT is a satisfying answer. There is a reason I am not in politics and that reason is laziness but also I probably couldn't pretend to be reasonable forever.)

Let me politely explain why that is. 1. There are not a horde of low wage illegals coming to compete with the poorest rural workers. Migration for the last several years has been a net outflow. More people are leaving than coming in, and the ones who are coming in are essentially making up for labor shortages - there aren't enough workers who can get to the places where the jobs are, and in places where there are acute shortages of immigrants the result is that crops are rotting, not that everyone suddenly has a job. 2. Government is already doing a shitload about illegal immigration, to the point where there are already huge numbers of deportations and internment camps. Doing anything more aggressive is almost impossible to do without literally killing people through neglect or abuse. 3. Wage stagnation is being driven from the top - the bigass corporate heads and CEOs whose pay is dependent on showing quarterly profit increases. Increasing pay for workers is solely a cost center. It doesn't provide any visible value-add on a quarterly basis. People are being squeezed because of the rich, not because of immigrants. If, instead of looking at what's happening out your front door, you decide that the problem is actually illegal immigrants, it's not because you are trying to speak truth to power - it's because you're actually a racist and so you're jumping to racist assumptions. Therefore, if you ask that question, you're a racist for asking. See? Education always is better than just calling someone a racist, you racist shithead.
