I gravitated towards the Greens, eventually even joining the party itself.

The Linke is a party I grudgingly accept exists, but I've learned enough about DDR-history I can't bring myself to trust a party that was once the SED, a party leading the corrupt state apparatus ...

So what are realistic - first of all, numerically possible - coalitions on a Bundeslevel right now? How guaranteed is Black-Red to have a majority actually? How unlikely is Red-Red-Green to have one?
And is there anything else? I assume nobody wants to even discuss this Black-Light Blue option so far. Bundes-Black-Green most likely isn't workable so far is it?

How will an election campaign look like if Black-Red is the only realistic option?

Tons. Depends on how wrong the official prognosis is, otherwise very likely. Very unlikely if things continue like now. No. No we have nightmares enough thank you, Black-Green could work out, but doesn't give a majority either. lovely.

So Chris Christie is competent? Or is Gabriel incompetent at impersonating Chris Christie? I mean, Gabriel has no bridgegate. Besides, Maas is all right, what's your problem with him? Especially when you have idiots like Dobrindt or Öttinger running around.

It's probably got to do with the whole "businessman" meme Trump has going on. Since he has no political experience whatsoever, his followers have convinced themselves that he'll just take over the government and run it like a private enterprise, using his :airquote:proven:airquote: business acumen. I guess randomly dumping money into places is their latest attempt to reconcile that idea and reality.

Not for a long time. The AfD (our populist rightwing idiot movement) is going to be relevant in a couple of states but has no chance of governing on a federal level. Plus they're currently busy infighting. Germans are (as of yet) too lazy and too well-fed to actually play at having a revolution.

Half of the german Bundestag is elected like the senators in the usa, FPTP style per district. However the other half is distributed proportionally to votes acquired amongst the parties that made it past the 5% mark in the popular vote.

As such it's nearly impossible for us to have a cataclysm like in the usa, even if a party managed to cast a Grand Gerrymandering spell.

Yeah, that "hell no" should not be taken as "never ever ever". The Greens eventually became a party you could ally with, The Left is in the process of becoming one, and if it sticks around, the AfD will, too.

Not quite correct. All seats are proportionally distributed. The people elected in the districts are subtracted from the total allotment, the rest is filled up from the state parties' lists. (Somewhat simplified, but it's the gist of how it works.)

We already scouted German Donald Trump (a handsome fella named Dieter Bohlen, who had a famous TV talkshow called "Modern Talking" in the 80s) and he is under close watch. As soon as he makes any moves for the chancellorship we will still have at least a year to get the hell out and to Kanada. Don't worry man, it's under control.

The CDU/CSU looked like they might be able to in the last election due to the way the 5% threshold works. Under certain circumstances you may find that a party that only got 40% or so of votes gets 50% of the seats. Right now 40% for the AfD is utterly ludicrous, of course, but I'm fairly confident that a double-digit result is not only possible but even likely.

A prominent example being the CSU at the state election in 2003, where they got 61,something% of the popular vote iirc, but ended up with more than two-thirds of the seats

Unrelated, but I looked something else up while I wrote the above and realised that in the 1972 election, Union and SPD together accounted for 90,7% of the popular vote :psyduck: In 2009, it was 56,8%, though it has recovered somewhat by now ofc. No recovery for the Austrian Volksparteien - in 1975, ÖVP and SPÖ together got 93,3% and current polling sees them at somewhere between 45% and 48%. How the mighty have fallen :v:
